You've always found a strange sort of stillness in art galleries. Like the paintings on the walls are silently watching, waiting for something none of the idle viewers can comprehend. It's places like these that have always drawn you in--quiet, calm, a world away from whatever's happening outside. It's a type of sanctuary to you, somewhere you can catch your breath and think for a bit. And enjoy some nice art, of course. Today is no different, though the air seems thicker. More charged with that same unspoken thing the flatly painted people gaze out at.

The exhibit you've wandered into today isn't like the others. The usual landscapes and portraits are gone, replaced with dark, twisted pieces that moreso resemble a jumble of emotion that anything coherent. Yet they all seem to pull at something deep inside you. The walls are lined with canvases that just feel... personal. They aren't disturbing--they just speak to you in a way you can't quite explain. It's as if the artist has reached into every memory tucked deep in the crevices of your mind and smeared them around on a canvas.

One painting in particular catches your eye. It's a portrait of sorts, abstract but unmistakably human. The figure's face is a drag of colors, distorted beyond recognition, yet there's something familiar in the mess. Your heartbeat feels exceptionally loud in your ears as you take a few tentative steps closer, drawn in by the haunting silhouette framed in red and black colors that seem to bleed from the very fibers of the canvas. The title card beneath it reads: "The Bloody Painter."

You've heard the name before. Muttered in more... back alley galleries, mentioned online in corners of the internet that should be left unexplored. A relatively unknown artist, known for creating dark masterpieces like the one before you. You've skimmed their work before, but this? This felt too different.

Days pass, but the image stays with you, refusing to fade from your mind. The Bloody Painter, there's something about it--about him--that pulls at you, that won't let go. You start digging to get rid of the annoying itch in the back of your skull, asking questions, following breadcrumbs throughout year old websites and forums and newspapers. The deeper you go, the more you find. Unsettling details, strange coincidences, until finally, you find him. Or, rather, someone else that knew him. 20 bucks and an address later...

The place is tucked away in the edge of town, just barely dipping into the thick surrounding forest, a crumbling building that looks like it's been abandoned for years. The air is damp, smelling faintly of mildew and old paint. The hallway leading from the entryway seems to stretch forever, walls narrowing as you move forward, your footsteps echoing off of the cracked tile below. You're not sure what you were expecting, but it wasn't this--this eerie quiet, the weight of something unseen but heavy weighing down on your shoulders.

Then, you hear it. A faint whisper of a sound, like the tip of a paintbrush skimming a canvas.

You round the corner and find him.

Helen Otis, the Bloody Painter, sits before a massive canvas, his back turned to you. His movements are slow, methodical, the brush in his hand gliding over the surface with a practiced ease that somehow seems both lazy and near-obsessive. His dark hair falls in messy strands around his face, his clothes speckled with paint--mostly red. His whole presence feels... wrong. Like a shadow that's too deep, too dark to fit in with it's surroundings naturally.

He doesn't turn when you enter. He doesn't have to.

"I knew you'd come," he says, his voice a whisper that feels like it personally drips down your spine like ice water. "You've been following me. Haven't you?"

There's a long pause, the air heavy and nearly cloyingly thick. His words aren't a question, really--they're a statement. One he's already sure of. You're not even sure what to say, or how to explain why you're here. Hi, sorry for borderline stalking you, I just thought your paintings were cool. Maybe you'd stick to silence.

He finally turns to face you, and for the first time, you see his eyes. Dark, hollow, but burning with an intensity you've only ever seen before on canvas. He's younger than you expected, around your own age, but the way he looks at you makes your skin crawl.

A slow smile creeps across his face, but it doesn't bother to infect his eyes. He sets the brush down carefully, as if it's something fragile, then stands, wiping his hands on a stained cloth. His gaze never leaves you.

"You're different, you know." He begins, stepping closer, his voice soft, deliberate. "There's something about you. Something no one else has."

You try to step back, to match the distance, but your feet don't seem to move. There's something in his voice, in the way he speaks, that holds you in place. He's too close now, his presence overwhelming, suffocating.

"I've been painting you for a long time," he murmurs, reaching out to gently trace the line of your cheekbone with a thumb. "Long before you ever knew I existed. Every stroke, every color... it's all you. You're my muse."

The word sends a shiver down your spine. Muse. Or maybe it's the way he's looking at you. Like you're some object to be admired, studied, captured. Not a person, not someone with a life of their own.

"I don't--" You find your voice, attempting to protest, but he quickly cuts you off.

"You don't understand yet," he coos, his voice taking on an edge despite it's sickeningly sweet quality. "But you will. You'll see. You're part of something bigger now--my work, my art. I need you."

His words hang heavy in the air between you, thick and dangerous. You realize, with a sinking feeling, that this isn't just about the art. It's about you. He's not asking for your permission. He's telling you what's already been decided.

"You'll stay." He murmurs, almost to himself as he raises his other hand to your cheek, mirroring the other's position as he gently tilts your head this way and that, examining every dip, curve, and contour of your skin. "You'll stay, and I'll make you perfect."

Your breath catches in your throat as his words settle in, a quiet promise wrapped in a suffocating sense of inevitability. His touch lingers, cold and deliberate, each finger grazing your skin like he's trying to memorize it. Every instinct screams at you to move, to run, but you're frozen under the weight of his gaze, his will pressing down on you like an unseen force.

Slowly, oh so slowly, one of his hands slipping down to trace the hollow of your neck, gingerly thumbing open the buttons of your shirt. "There have been some... details I've missed. While observing you. You understand, don't you? An artist's work is never complete without a full reference."

"I—I can't stay," you manage to whisper, snapped from your haze, your voice shaky and unfamiliar even to yourself. "This isn't—I'm not—"

"Shhh," he interrupts, the faintest trace of amusement slipping into his tone. "It's already done. You don't have to think anymore. Just... let it happen."
