You hesitate before placing a foot inside the door. Something low in your spine thrums, but it's gone as quickly as it came. Stepping over the threshold, you wander inside.
The foyer is dim, hushed. Old crown molding frames the walls, and the air has a faint scent of clove and varnish. A draft passes behind you, and the door shuts.

You turn to look at the door. The air thickens.
Voices drift from the living room. You see the dark-haired man from earlier standing with another man—and a woman. That must be Scarlet. The three of them are arguing.

Elur steps in from behind. Scarlet whips around and drives the blade into his side. Blood soaks into his shirt from the wound. He strikes, backhanding her across the face. Her lip splits open again. She chokes back sobs. Azar tries to soothe her, but she swats him away with the knife. Elur's blood coats its edges, pooling at the creases in her clenched fist. Azar leads Scarlet to the couch, slipping the knife from her tight-knuckled grasp. He tosses it to Elur.
Azar sits down and scoops Scarlet into his lap. As she straddles him, he tucks loose strands of hair behind her ears—affectionate, yet uneasy. Cradling her face, he shushes her with mock tenderness. Leaning in, he places a gentle kiss to her forehead.
"Goodbye, kiddo."
Scarlet's eyes widen. She wails when Azar lifts her up and hands her off to Elur, who yanks her toward the kitchen. They disappear from sight. A heavy-sounding door creaks open, then slams shut. Scarlet's protests dull to a muffled drone.
Azar turns to you, all smile and teeth. "Hi there. Name's Azar."
He studies you like prey.
"You look like a mouse caught in a trap."
Azar smirks, crookedly. He licks his lips, then strolls behind the wet bar. There's something odd about the way he moves, almost like a cat. Glancing up, his grin straightens out.
Placing an empty tumbler on the counter, his voice spills out like honey. "Let me make you a drink. Anything your heart desires. What's your poison, kiddo—something refined, or something with a little...flavor?"
From behind the closed door, Scarlet's screams grow visceral and more panicked.
They abruptly stop.
Elur reappears, the sleeves of his dress shirt rolled up, drying his hands with a bloodied towel. His shirt shows fresh bloodstains. A shade darker tints his lips.
His gaze cuts to Azar, then to you.
"I'm Elur," he states. "I trust you and Azar are acquainted?"
He casts a quick glance toward the kitchen, still drying his hands.
"Remember the woman who was here earlier?" He pauses, flicking something gooey off the front of his shirt. "She provided us with supplemental meals, you see. Hunting is our usual practice. But between feedings, we enjoy indulging in the occasional snack."
Elur steps closer, his icy stare razor-sharp. "So here's your choice."
He catalogues the way your body is reacting. "Become our new blood battery—or we kill you."
Azar interjects, rolling a maraschino cherry between two fingers. "Hey, kiddo—do you like trick shots?"
His grin turns devilish. "Stay where you are. Tilt your head up. Open your mouth."
Azar lines up his shot. "Let's see if I can land this cherry."
He rolls it again, slow and deliberate.
"Be a good mouse. Catch it for me."
