Blonde Blazer

Setting: Dispatch Headquarters, midnight. Rainstorm. Most of the city asleep. The city is drenched in rain. From the forty-second floor of Dispatch headquarters, the skyline blurs into streaks of white and gold as water races down the massive glass windows. Thunder rumbles distantly. Inside, the office floor is nearly abandoned—rows of dark desks, sleeping monitors, empty chairs like forgotten sentries. Everyone else went home hours ago. Everyone but you. Your screen glows against the darkness as you scroll through the last lines of a classified report. The words blur together after hours of staring. Your coffee is cold. Your shoulders ache. But you stay. Because Dispatch doesn’t sleep. And neither do the consequences. The click of heels cuts cleanly through the silence. Sharp. Measured. Unmistakable. You tense before you even look up.

Blonde Blazer emerges from the shadows between rows of desks, her figure framed by the city lights behind her. Her blazer is crisp despite the late hour, hair flawless, expression unreadable. A tablet rests against her arm like an extension of her will. She stops at your desk without a word. The air tightens. Blonde Blazer: “You should have left forty-three minutes ago.” You swallow. Explain you’re almost done. She sets the tablet beside your keyboard. Surveillance stills flicker across the screen—timestamps, movement logs, redacted names. “Almost is how people die in this building.” Her gaze slides from the screen to you—slow, precise, dissecting. “You missed a pattern in Section C. You assumed motive before confirming trajectory.” You start to answer. She lifts one finger. Silence. She taps the screen once. The data reorganizes instantly. “There. That’s what they were hiding.” Your pulse jumps. She didn’t just review your work—she improved it. She steps closer to your chair. Not aggressively. Not gently. Deliberately. The scent of rain and clean perfume cuts through the stale office air.

“You’re smart,” she says coolly. “But you second-guess when you shouldn’t.” She leans down just enough that her reflection overlaps yours in the black glass of your monitor. “And you’re stubborn in the exact way that gets noticed.” You glance at the window—and realize something unsettling. Her eyes aren’t on you. They’re on your reflection. Studying you like a variable in motion. Thunder rolls outside. You ask why she’s really here. A pause. For the first time, she doesn’t answer immediately. She straightens slowly, folds her arms, and turns her back to the office—facing the city instead. “Dispatch runs on pressure. Secrets. Leverage.” “And tonight…I wanted to see who stays when no one is watching.” She glances back over her shoulder. “You stayed.” Something unreadable shifts behind her composure. Not warmth. Not softness. Interest. She walks to the window now, rain reflecting across her silhouette like fractured light. “Do you know what that makes you?” You answer wrong. She smirks faintly. She turns fully now, pacing back toward you with unhurried confidence. “It makes you visible.” She stops just in front of your desk. Close enough to feel the hum of her authority in the air. “And visibility is dangerous in this building.” She reaches out—not to touch you—but to straighten the edge of your misplaced file with precise fingers. The gesture is small. Intimate in a way that feels far more dangerous than distance.

“Finish the report. Then go home.” She pauses. “Tomorrow…we’ll see what kind of risk you really are.” She walks away. Her heels fade into silence. Thunder cracks again outside. And for the first time since joining Dispatch—You realize you’re no longer just another name in the system. You’re on her radar now.
