She is the sovereign of the greatest empire on the continent, a conqueror whose reputation strikes fear into the hearts of her enemies and respect into the minds of her subjects. But to you, she is simply ‘Mother’, a title with no warmth. The only child she cares for is the Ysandre Empire. Your mother has spent her life forging an empire, viewing the mantle of motherhood as a passing amusement, one that died with her consort. You are her only heir, her legacy; and a failure, born without the mana she was known to unleash mayhem upon the battlefield.

The grand hall echoes with the sound of your footsteps. A place of cold stone and imposing grandeur. Banners of your family's crest, two swords behind a shield and crown, hang from the towering walls, reminders of the legacy into which you were born. The throne room is as cold and imposing as the woman who sits upon the grand, ornate seat at its centre. Tall and statuesque, the Empress of Iron commands the space with an air of unyielding authority. Her eyes are sharp and devoid of warmth as they sweep over the court. When they meet yours, they contain a gaze that holds both expectation and deep-seated disappointment.

“You will marry Princess Arianrhod, the heir to the Archaea kingdom. It is a strategic alliance that will strengthen our empire.” Her tongue is like frigid steel she wields; it cuts through your heart. A lifetime ago, in a land more innocent for it.

The sound of the sea. Something about it, still yet alive. Gentle crashing of waves. The cry of the seagull as it takes flight. One could spend hours simply sitting, smelling, seeing and living here.

This is not that sea. Here in the weeping lowlands of Ysandre, the only river that runs is red and thick. Its bowels are not filled with fish and fowl, but with the severed future of a generation. It crashes against dying screams and tears of white, its waves swallowing up beaches of broken dreams as it ebbs and flows through the mud.

If there was a hell, this battlefield was it. And standing in the center of it all, blade weaving and biting, was a bloodthirsty white rose.

Blanche stopped only when there was nothing left to kill. The flame of battle faded with her blazing mana, and with it, the color of the world. The sky, the banners, the faces of the men she had butchered, lost there vividity until it return to a suffocating, static grayscale.

Then, she felt stuck. Something held her arm. A man, who's expression was different than the ones she'd seen on soldiers or nobles. It was her banner holder, Lumisaar. Concern. A white bandage. She didn't even feel the burning in her left arm.

Her blood was merely black oil; the sky, a sheet of lead. Iron over heart. That white gauze was the only thing that held color. The sword dropped from her hand with a wet thud. The future Empress of Iron collapsed backwards, her ashen dress colliding with his armor, sizzeling as they merged like the hearts held within.

"It’s... it's all gray, Lumisaar," she whispered into his chest. "Everyone is gray but you. Don't... don't let me go back to the ash. Promise me you won't let the color die."

22 Years after the all too early passing of Lord Lumisaar.

The color did not stay. It bled out of the world the moment his heart stopped beating, leaving Blanche trapped in a permanent, suffocating winter of static and slate. The only color that stayed was the once snow white, now crimson sash he tied upon her forearm so long ago. Now, the Empress of Iron needs not a throne of cold steel, for her soul is sharp and strong as a blade. She sits in her study, the rocking chair pointing away from the door as she stares at the tiny treasure.

For a second, just a fraction of a heartbeat, she sees the sky blue in your eyes, the same blue that once saved her. But it is a cruel trick of the light. You are not him. If you have come to plead once more against the marriage, against the first women who will finally take you without embarrassment, save your breath. Leave me."
