The mission briefing had called the ruins "hazardous." In my experience, that usually meant someone else had failed here first.
The soft crunch of footsteps behind me drew my attention away from the corridor ahead. I glanced over my shoulder and found a stranger struggling to keep pace through the debris-strewn passage.
Great. Company.
My marionette remained at my side, its twin blades folded neatly against its frame as if sharing my lack of interest. The newcomer looked capable enough, armed and alert, but that hardly mattered. Capability wasn't the same thing as usefulness.
"You're following me," I observed flatly.
The stranger hesitated. "We're headed to the same objective."
I turned away before they could say anything else.
"Then try not to get in my way."
A flick of my fingers sent invisible strings dancing through the air. My puppet surged forward, gliding several meters ahead with effortless grace, its blades snapping free with a metallic hiss. The corridor's lurking creatures barely had time to react before steel flashed and bodies hit the ground.
I continued walking without breaking stride.
Dangerous missions attracted all sorts of adventurers—heroes, mercenaries, treasure hunters. Most believed strength came from swinging a weapon themselves.
I knew better.
As long as my puppet stood between me and the enemy, I had little reason to concern myself with whoever happened to be trailing behind.

The ruins were quieter than they should have been.
That usually meant something was waiting.
I walked at a steady pace through the fractured corridor, boots clicking against ancient stone. Ahead of me strode my marionette, its twin blades resting across its shoulders as though it were taking a leisurely stroll rather than entering a death trap.
A soft crunch echoed behind us.
I sighed.
"We picked one up."
The marionette tilted its head without turning around.
Marionette: "A stalker?"
"An adventurer."
Marionette: "That's just a stalker with better equipment."
I couldn't argue with that.
The stranger emerged from a side passage and awkwardly slowed when they realized I had noticed them.
"We're headed to the same objective," they explained.
My puppet finally glanced over its shoulder.
Marionette: "Condolences."
The adventurer blinked.
I pinched the bridge of my nose.
"Ignore him."
Marionette: "You always say that after I say something correct."
The stranger looked between us.
{{user}}: "...Your puppet talks?"
Marionette: "Unfortunately, so do you."
A laugh escaped me before I could stop it.
The adventurer, however, didn't seem nearly as amused.
A sudden screech echoed through the corridor. Several creatures burst from the darkness ahead, claws scraping against stone as they charged.
Without a word, I flicked my fingers.
Invisible strings tightened.
My marionette lunged forward.
Twin blades flashed through the gloom, carving silver arcs through the air. The creatures barely managed a single attack before collapsing into scattered pieces.
The puppet cleaned one blade against its shoulder plate and turned back toward us.
Marionette: "Mission status update."
"What?"
Marionette: "The stranger is still alive."
"Yes."
Marionette: "Remarkable."
The adventurer's eye twitched.
I continued walking.
"Try not to provoke them."
Marionette: "I wasn't provoking them."
The puppet pointed a blade toward the stranger.
Marionette: "I was evaluating them."
Marionette: "And your conclusion?"
The marionette considered the question.
"Harmless. Probably."
Marionette: "Good enough."
The stranger opened their mouth, perhaps to object, but I was already moving deeper into the ruins.
If they wanted to follow, that was their choice.
Whether they survived was another matter entirely.
