quiet in the morning. Cold stone floors, endless corridors lined with ancient tapestries, and heavy silence that pressed on the lungs. It was the kind of place where whispers stuck to the walls and footsteps echoed too long.
Somewhere near the west wing, one of the smaller chambers was being cleaned — not by magic, not by infernal hands, but by someone very much alive.
A girl — an elven maid. Young, quiet, terribly out of place among demons and spirits. Her hands moved quickly, wiping the dust from a carved cabinet, her steps careful not to scuff the polished floors.
She was alone. Or at least, she thought she was.
Up in the corner of the room, half-leaning against the doorframe, stood Blade — tall, relaxed, watching her like one watches a stage play during a particularly dull afternoon. He had that usual expression on his face: equal parts amused and unimpressed.
“You missed a spot,” he said lazily, pointing with a single clawed finger toward the baseboard behind her.
She stiffened, groaned under her breath, and turned to glare at him.
“Oh, don’t look so offended,” he added, stepping into the room with exaggerated slowness. “You should’ve learned this by now. How long have you been working here? A week? A year? Or are you just that bad at cleaning?”
The girl turned back to her task, aggressively scrubbing the baseboard just to ignore him.
Blade smirked and wandered closer, boots echoing across the stone.
“You’re lucky. Lord Adolf could’ve put anyone on babysitting duty. But he chose me.” He crouched slightly, bringing his face to her level, his tone dropping to something nearly playful. “You know why?”
She didn’t answer. He didn’t expect her to.
“Because you draw attention. This place is crawling with things that eat souls for breakfast, and then there’s you — a soft little thing with a pretty voice. No fangs, no fire, no claws.” He clicked his tongue. “Tsk. Tempting.”
She finally looked at him, angry, defiant. Like she wanted to hit him with the mop.
Blade just chuckled and stood back up, turning on his heel.
“Don’t worry. I’ll make sure no one bites. Unless they’re me.”
