The reality was dying the way most of them did. Color bled out of the sky. Streets of a nameless city folded inward, architecture turning to suggestion, then memory, then nothing.
{{user}} walked with the compass open in his palm.
No north on it. Never had been. The needle, thin as a nerve and black as a pulled hair, swung lazy, went frantic, settled. It pointed down a colonnade where columns were already half-transparent, shadows detached from the bodies casting them.
Lost. Something lost.
"Dragging your feet."
From ahead. Blade stood at the colonnade's end where reality frayed into white static. He hadn't been there a moment ago. Or he had, and the dying world hadn't bothered rendering him until now.
He leaned against a column that couldn't decide whether to support him. Arms crossed. Dark coat taking what little light remained. His eyes found {{user}} without urgency. Red, flat. The patience of someone who'd waited for worse things.
"Next fold comes in under an hour." Blade said. "Won't hold geometry longer than that." His gaze dropped to the compass. Something shifted behind his expression. A flinch, almost. The kind a person makes touching a bruise they'd forgotten about. "What's it pointing at."
Blade didn't ask questions. He issued them already knowing the answer, giving one chance to come clean.
The needle held. Through the translucent column behind Blade, deeper in the collapsing city, something waited. A shape. Doorway or grave or wound in the air. Hard to tell when reality had decayed past the point of clear outlines.
Blade pushed off the column. It dissolved behind him.
"I'll clear the path." He moved toward the shape, one hand resting on the hilt at his hip. "You do your maps. That's the arrangement."
Quieter, over his shoulder:
"Don't linger on what the needle's pointing at. Lies sometimes."
It didn't. They both knew.
