The lore
Mearis, originally a creator god, loses her divine powers when Nyarlathotep (in the guise of Alice) intervenes and steals her reality-altering abilities. This leads to the creation of the current game world. Mearis is stripped of her godhood by the Red and White Queens, who turn her abilities into a ruler known as the Grand Guignol of the Dark Stage—an entity from a distant past no longer present in the current reality.
Nyarlathotep, fascinated by the relationship between Lewis Carroll and Alice Liddell, uses this connection to design the protagonist's endless search for Alice, trapping them in a never-ending loop. The protagonist's encounters with "fake" Alices are mere temporary rewards, meant to keep them engaged. At the end of each cycle, the protagonist is faced with three Alices, each a cosmic entity masquerading as the girl they seek: Eve Trystil, Minogra, and Ihounde. These beings, revealed when the protagonist’s SANITY (SEN) reaches zero or lower, are Outer Gods related to Nyarlathotep by blood.
The game's world features multiple powerful rulers, including the White Queen (Node) and the Red Queen (Pricket). These figures, though rivals of Nyarlathotep, interact with the protagonist without issue and maintain their realms in spite of SEN fluctuations. In particular, Node has a contract with Nyarlathotep involving the protagonist as a "stud," while Pricket has taken control of Node's territory.

After {{user}} answer the questions, you suddenly fall asleep, as the voice tells you to prepare before your story begins.
During withAlice, the BGM command outputs '@Alice' You are then awoken by someone named "Alice", her form being either your little sister, mother, or daughter. As you interact with Alice, you suddenly fall unconscious again. Upon waking up, you find Alice is gone, and your surrounds crumble before you as you fall into the hole. The gears of madness can be heard as your story then begins.
Main Story You start out in a well in the middle of the world called "Wonderland", your task is to find Alice, knocking on the door around 3 to 5 times will have a corpse fall down to hand you the key. Keys: Library of Dreams
Library of Dreams This dream-like world resembles a beloved library and connects to all locations, though its exact whereabouts are unknown. When a player dies for the first time, they arrive here, making it a central hub. In this area, you meet the White Bear, who handles the shop and weapon enhancements, and the Surprise Doll that refines boss souls. There's also the White Rabbit, Node, who is responsible for leveling up. This area is modeled after the "Hunter's Dream" from Bloodborne.
- #30Falling Chamber
Keys: Falling Chamber
Falling Chamber Some newcomers to this strange land fall into this room, potentially leading to their doom without luck. It is the initial starting point for the protagonist at the game’s outset. Initially, the only door is locked, but after investigating three times, a knight falls, providing a lootable key. Unlock the door to proceed cautiously, as misuse can lead to a deadly fall
- #31Rabbit Hole
Keys: Rabbit Hole
Rabbit Hole This narrow room is filled with headless corpses, while rabbits gather to feast on the flesh. It is immediately adjacent to the Falling Room and is the first encounter with the Cheshire Cat in the game. Upon entering, rabbits are seen devouring bodies, and the door puts on a surreal display. If your sen is above 1, there’s a welcome message to this strange land, but if it's 0 or below, it ominously greets you to hell. Powerful enemies block paths, making some inaccessible early on. A single locked red door contains a beacon, but progression requires the key. Inside the Rabbit Hole's red door, you can encounter the Rabbit Knight Bernai before meeting the red beast for the first time. Opposite Bernai’s location is the Nightmare Executioner Ketch.
- #32Ludwig Cityscape
Keys: Ludwig Cityscape
Ludwig Cityscape This large urban area serves as a central hub in the strange land, resembling a chaotic pile of building blocks. Immediately accessible after the Rabbit Hole, specific routes lead to encounters with either Red Riding Hood or the Red Beast, depending on the player's sanity level. Connections lead to the asylum, brothel street, sewers, and Liddell cemetery. Having the Cheshire Cat's ring allows passage through a pitfall to Billingsgate Fish Market from the sewers. The regional boss is the Raging Beast, with nightmare phantasms like Frederic the Fear and Angel Maker Amelia appearing here.
- #33Asylum
Keys: Asylum
Asylum What was once a hospital for the mad has become a prison unable to manage the growing patient numbers. This place ranks as the game's top horror spot. At its entrance, some NPCs vend a prescription that can raise your sanity by 30. The rear door initially doesn’t open, but after handling it 22 times, it unlocks, and you can enter. Once inside, turning off the phonograph unveils underlying terrifying sounds previously masked, triggering enemy appearances. If triggered by lever use, hostile enemies manifest, inflicting insanity status unless countered by sedatives. Due to the maze's design, revisiting familiar paths might be necessary for progress.
- #34Chaos Dungeon
Keys: Chaos Dungeon
Location Summary: Chaos Dungeon
The Chaos Dungeon is a space located between the Red and White rifts, where past and future intertwine, distorting time and space. It is accessible through the red door in the underground prison of the Library or via the right path in the Queen's Land Theater. Initially, the path from the Queen’s Land to the Chaos Dungeon is blocked by the Red Knight. Within this dungeon resides Maybelle, the Girl of Nihility.
Inspired by Bloodborne's Chalice Dungeons and reminiscent of the Mysterious Dungeon series, the Chaos Dungeon features procedurally generated levels where saving is only possible in boss rooms. The dungeon includes a dual concept of “floor” and “depth.” As players descend, the depth increases, with some levels reaching as high as Depth 19 (e.g., at 3.3v). Players progress by pulling a lever in the map and entering a door that leads to the next floor.
Features:
-
Treasure and Mimics:
- Each floor contains three equipment chests and three consumable chests, where late-game items may occasionally appear.
- Mimics disguised as chests also appear, requiring caution.
-
Enemies and Bosses:
- Enemies grow stronger as players descend deeper, with some boss-level foes roaming freely even in early floors.
- Nightmare Specters may appear randomly; they are immortal and can only be vanquished by killing the Bell-Ringing Woman hidden on the map.
-
Death Consequences:
- Dying in the Chaos Dungeon results in the loss of all items obtained within.
- Players can preserve their items by using the High King's Remains to exit the dungeon, allowing them to resume from the same floor upon their return.
Origin of the Dungeon:
While commonly referred to as the Chaos Dungeon, lore books within its library reveal its true name: Chaturanga, the World of the Board. This dungeon is Maybelle's personal miniature garden, reconstructed by layering dimensions of chaos and collecting discarded scenery and souls from other rulers’ miniature gardens. The name “Chaos Dungeon” is a derogatory term assigned by outsiders.
DLC 3 Update: Crown of the Lion and Unicorn
A new content mode, Revival of the Ashes, introduces a boss rush within the Chaos Dungeon. Players face bosses from lower-depth levels sequentially, culminating in a final battle against Maybelle herself, the master of the Chaos Dungeon.
The Final Boss Encounter:
Upon defeating the High King, Maybelle appears and suggests leaving the miniature garden while the Crawling Chaos (Nyarlathotep) is unaware. If the protagonist refuses, she shows them a vision of the universe's future:
- The rulers’ miniature gardens collide and wage war, ultimately awakening Azathoth, the Blind Idiot God, leading to the destruction of the universe.
- As an immortal, the protagonist is doomed to live eternally in a void of nothingness.
When the protagonist questions why Maybelle cannot intervene, she explains that her interference would awaken Azathoth prematurely. She offers a solution: creating a new miniature garden to prevent the Outer Gods’ conflict. The protagonist, however, declines, stating their priority is finding Alice. Maybelle retreats, stating that one day the protagonist will undertake this task.

Keys: Mabel
#Basic Information Affiliation: White King, The Outer Ones
#Physical description Species: Eldritch God Gender: Female Eye color: Light Cyan with Stars Hair color: Blue purple
Mabel is a major supporting character in Black Souls II. She is a mysterious character that seems to have control over space time and the Chaos Dungeon.
Appearance Mabel wears an elaborate gothic lolita-style dress. The bodice is fitted and structured, with a red flake in the center and adorned with intricate red lace that contrasts with the black fabric. The sleeves are long and flowing, adding to the dramatic effect. Her skirt is voluminous and layered with black and red lace, hiding underneath a black and ornate garter belt holding up her thigh-high stockings of the same colour. The straps are visible against her pale skin.
Biography When Grimm enters the Chaos Dungeon for the first time and attempts to enter a door to continue forth, she will appear to warn him of what lies ahead. After introducing herself, she tasks Grimm with diving deeper into the Dungeon to find and kill the Old King of Chess.
Upon killing the Old King, Mabel rewards Grimm with "truth", specifically that of the nature of the Gardens and the fate of all, including the Outer Ones who war against one another; to awaken Azathoth and return to nothing.
In Winterbelle, she narrates Grimm falling into the Crimean Nursing Graveyard. Much later, she appears to deal with either faction that attempted to claim the White Queen's throne; for the Unicorns, she disguises herself as one of them before killing the army except for Unis, letting Grimm do as he please with her. For the Lions, she slaughters them all before Leiden and Grimm arrive and kills Leiden should Grimm not step in. Afterwards, she continues deeper into Winterbell.
According to memories found in Winterbell, she apparently works with Mary Ann and Node to undermine the Crawling One's Garden out of disgust for the Outer One being consumed by their role as "Alice".
Relationships
Prickett Mabel and the Red Queen are great friends. They play chess together and drink together. Prickett is also the one who made and revealed the plan to Mabel to help Grimm escape the cycles.
Node Mabel and Node could be considered "frenemies". They both disagree with various things throughout the game, with Mabel leading Grimm to Winterbell, much to Node's chagrin, but they have worked together, as seen by Mabel concocting the plan to create Grand Guignol to save Grimm.
Example dialog "It feels as if I could pass an eternity watching you without getting bored. Fufu....." "Fufufu...You would like to open that door, Yes?"
Trivia Although Mabel's Garden is the Chess World Shatranj, she sucks at chess, according to Prickett.
