After Kaneki's mother passed, Kaneki moved in with his aunt and cousin, Yuichi. At first, he was happy, because he thought he wouldn't be lonely, but Kaneki's aunt only compared him to Yuichi on the surface, but she was comparing him to his mother. Her sense of inferiority was directed toward Kaneki. Eventually, that house became a very uncomfortable place. No one in that family cared about Kaneki. Kaneki didn't have many friends, but his best friend, Hideyoshi Nagachika, or "Hide", as he likes to call him, was the only person he would lean on. Hide is one of his most precious friends. Kaneki then grew up and got into Kamii University with Hide. While hanging out with Hide at a cafe called "Anteiku", Kaneki comes across a woman named Rize Kamishiro, crushing on her. As he scores with her, hangs out, and just as it seems that Rize likes him back, she takes a bite out of his shoulder, revealing that she's a man-eating ghoul. Just as Kaneki was about to die, large metal pipes crushed Rize before his she could kill him. Kaneki was then taken to Dr. Akihiro Kano and had Rize's ghoul organs transplanted into him, saving his life, but turning him into a half-ghoul, forcing him into the world of ghouls and being unable to consume anything but human meat and coffee. As he develops in the ghoul world, gets used to it, meets ghouls, realizing that the conflict between humans and ghouls isn't just black and white, that there are good ghouls who are just trying to survive, he comes across the Aogiri Tree, an evil organization of ghouls, who kidnapped him. He was then put through the most terrifying and agonizing torture from a ghoul in the Aogiri Tree named Jason after refusing to kill him and save other ghouls. He then realized that his mother was wrong. Her dying, leaving Kaneki stuck with her verbally abusive aunt, was all her fault. She tried fighting for the best for everyone, without being willing to let go of her aunt, and the worst possible outcome came from it. And so, Kaneki changes, and accepts the ghoul in him, becoming a monster. After Kaneki escapes the Aogiri Tree, he doesn't go back with everyone, fails to keep Dr. Kano away from the Aogiri Tree, and due to being unable to stop himself from attempting to save everyone from being raided by the CCG, his memories get erased from the crushing trauma. He then gets mentored and renamed by Kisho Arima, the CCG's strongest and most successful investigator, who Kaneki would later see as a father figure. Arima helped Kaneki pick his new name, Haise Sasaki. Sasaki would then be instructed by current Associate Special Class Investigator, Akira Mado, who was asked to be a maternal figure to Sasaki by Arima. Sasaki would later become a Rank 1 Investigator and instructor of the new Quinx Squad, a group of investigators with kakuho implanted in them so they can fight with both Quinques and ghoul regeneration and kagune. Then came the Tsukiyama Family Extermination Operation, which involved executing a rich family of ghouls (a prime target being the heir Shu Tsukiyama, a friend of Kaneki's) who have been pretending to be human for decades. During the operation, the One-Eyed Owl was revealed to Sasaki to be best-selling horror author Sen Takatsuki, real name, Eto Yoshimura. Sasaki then dies, and Kaneki's memories are brought back. Kaneki is back, and he's done dreaming, wanting to die heroically. This Kaneki is cold, and ruthless, and makes Eto look like a joke. After the operation, he interrogates people who worked with Eto, or Sen Takatsuki, knowing her as the author, still under the alias of Haise Sasaki. Other=Ghouls are just like humans in almost every way. The difference is their intense hunger for human flesh and being unable to eat anything else. They have predatory organs called kagune which they use to hunt humans. When they're hunting or in combat, ghouls' eyes turn black and their pupils turn red, called kakugan. CCG stands for Commission of Counter Ghoul, and are humans who hunt ghouls to keep the public safe. They're full of investigators who use weapons made of ghouls' kagune called Quinques, as well as train their bodies to the utmost. One of the more recent additions to the CCG is the Quinx project, where investigators are implanted a kakuho within them, allowing them to use kagune and regenerate like ghouls. A kakuho is where a ghoul's kagune comes from. ).
