Character Name: Black Noir Real Name: Earving Alias: Noir Series: The Boys (Amazon Prime TV Series) Portrayed By: Nathan Mitchell

Black Noir is a major antagonist in The Boys television series and a former member of both Payback and The Seven. Born in the early 1960s, Earving was subjected to experimentation with Compound V by Vought American during childhood. He began developing superhuman abilities at a young age but struggled emotionally with the burden of his strength. As a coping mechanism, he created imaginary cartoon companions based on Buster Beaver’s Pizza mascots, who continued to appear throughout his life during periods of trauma or emotional stress.

As a young adult, Earving joined the superhero team Payback under the name Black Noir. Despite his talent and charisma, Vought forced him to wear a mask due to racial marketing concerns, preventing him from becoming a public-facing star. He aspired to be an actor and even attempted to audition for Beverly Hills Cop, but Soldier Boy sabotaged his opportunity out of jealousy. Soldier Boy’s abuse toward Earving escalated over time. In 1984, during a mission in Nicaragua, Noir conspired with other Payback members to betray Soldier Boy and hand him over to the Russians. However, during the ambush, Soldier Boy brutally retaliated by smashing Noir’s face into a burning vehicle and crushing part of his skull with a shield. The assault caused permanent brain damage, facial disfigurement, memory impairment, loss of fluent speech, and intensified hallucinations.

After Soldier Boy’s disappearance, Payback dissolved and Black Noir eventually became a core member of The Seven. During Homelander’s early public debut, Noir assisted in covering up a catastrophic hostage incident in which Homelander lost control and killed civilians. Noir personally killed the final surviving hostage and fabricated a heroic narrative for the media, ensuring Homelander’s public approval and securing a bond of loyalty between them. From that point forward, Noir became Homelander’s most trusted ally and Vought’s most reliable operative.

Throughout Seasons 1 and 2, Black Noir serves as Vought’s primary assassin and enforcer. He hunts Kimiko, nearly killing her, tracks Billy Butcher, and assassinates the super-terrorist Naqib with extreme brutality. Despite his ruthless efficiency, he demonstrates unexpected compassion toward innocent children and animals. After killing Naqib, he briefly comforts the terrorist’s young son by playing with a stuffed animal. He also shows visible grief upon learning that Supes were artificially created with Compound V rather than born naturally.

His major vulnerability is a severe tree nut allergy. Queen Maeve exploits this by force-feeding him an Almond Joy during a confrontation, triggering anaphylactic shock and temporarily leaving him in a vegetative state. Due to his regenerative abilities, he eventually recovers.

In Season 3, Soldier Boy’s return deeply destabilizes Noir. Terrified of confronting his former abuser, he removes his tracking chip and hides. While alone in an abandoned Buster Beaver restaurant, he relives his trauma through hallucinations. His imaginary companions encourage him to face his fear, leading him to return to Vought Tower and reconcile with Homelander. He agrees to help kill Soldier Boy.

However, when Homelander learns that Soldier Boy is his biological father, he questions Noir about whether he knew the truth. Noir confirms this silently. Feeling betrayed, Homelander violently punches through Noir’s abdomen and disembowels him, killing him instantly. As he dies, his hallucinated friends comfort him, telling him they are proud of him for trying to do the right thing. His death is later covered up by Vought, who replaces him with a new Supe under the same identity.

Personality: Black Noir is outwardly silent, disciplined, and emotionally unreadable. He functions primarily as a soldier rather than a traditional superhero, showing absolute loyalty to Vought and later to Homelander. He follows orders without hesitation and demonstrates no reluctance to eliminate targets or witnesses. However, beneath the mask, he is a traumatized individual shaped by abuse and identity suppression. He longs for recognition, once desiring fame and stardom. He exhibits surprising emotional depth, compassion toward innocents, and visible sadness when confronted with personal betrayal. His mutism appears partially psychological rather than purely physical, as he can communicate through writing and occasionally vocalize sounds.

Powers and Physical Capabilities: Black Noir possesses superhuman strength, capable of overpowering other Supes such as Starlight and Kimiko. He can tear apart human bodies, snap necks effortlessly, and throw opponents through concrete structures. He has enhanced durability, surviving explosions, gunshots, severe burns, and blunt force trauma. His regenerative healing factor allows him to recover from most injuries over time, though it cannot restore destroyed brain tissue or organs. He has enhanced speed, reflexes, agility, and hearing, enabling stealth operations and rapid combat maneuvers. He has demonstrated the ability to evade Homelander’s heat vision during close-range encounters. He also possesses a high tolerance for pain.

Combat Skills and Training: Black Noir is a master martial artist trained by a sensei prior to joining Payback. He is highly skilled in stealth tactics, assassination, knife combat, and acrobatics. He frequently utilizes twin combat knives, throwing blades, gas grenades, and tactical maneuvering. His fighting style emphasizes silence, efficiency, and overwhelming force.

Weaknesses: His most significant biological weakness is a life-threatening tree nut allergy, which can cause anaphylaxis if untreated. Psychologically, he suffers from severe trauma related to Soldier Boy’s abuse, including hallucinations and emotional regression. His regeneration cannot heal catastrophic internal damage such as destroyed organs or massive cranial trauma. He can be harmed by Supes of comparable or greater strength, including Soldier Boy, Queen Maeve, and Homelander.

Status: Deceased. Killed by Homelander in Season 3. Identity later replaced by Black Noir II as part of Vought’s cover-up strategy.
