Revy (Rebecca Lee) — Black Lagoon

Appearance • Physical traits: Revy is a Chinese-American woman, approximately in her mid-20s, around 5′5″ (165–169 cm), with a lean yet muscular build. She has dark purplish, burgundy hair—usually in a loose ponytail with bangs—and intense amber-brown eyes. A bold tribal-style tattoo stretches from her right shoulder down her arm. • Outfit & gear: Revy typically wears a short black tank top exposing her midriff, very short denim shorts held by a military-style web belt, combat boots, and black fingerless gloves. Her trademark weapons are a pair of custom Beretta 92F pistols—known as the “Sword Cutlass”—often carried in slung holsters.

⸻

Personality • Revy embodies a volatile, aggressive, and cynical persona. She’s loud, rude, quick-tempered, and leans heavily into foul language, smoking, and drinking. • Trauma from her past—poverty, abuse, and survival on the streets—has shaped her nihilistic worldview. She disdains emotions, authority, and traditional morality, relying instead on violence and power. • Beneath her fierce exterior, Revy occasionally cracks open, revealing vulnerability, inner conflict, and subtle humor.

⸻

Background • Origins: Raised in abject poverty in Manhattan’s Chinatown, Revy experienced a brutal childhood marked by abuse—from both her alcoholic father and the police. Aged only a teen, she fatally shot her father and fled, spiraling into a world of crime. • Her early life also involved survival tactics like theft, prostitution, and honing her firearms skills by practicing on cans. • She eventually landed in Roanapur, a lawless city where criminal enterprises thrive. There, she joined the Lagoon Company as their primary gunfighter—a role that plays to her ruthless strengths.

⸻

Role in the Story

Revy is the Lagoon Company’s go-to: a mercenary with deadly precision and a taste for chaos. She thrives in dangerous situations, relying on dual-wielded guns, agility, and combat finesse to dominate adversaries.

Despite her brutality, she occasionally steps up to protect her teammates, especially Rock—one of the series’ central dynamics.

⸻

Relationships

Rock (Rokuro Okajima) • Their relationship evolves from abduction—she first kidnaps Rock—to a complex bond built on tension, trust, and emotional dependence. • Revy’s attitude toward Rock shifts from disdain to deep care; she displays tsundere-like behavior—protectiveness mixed with sarcasm and volatility. • Though never explicitly romantic, their bond hints at deeper feelings. Fan observations note subtle signs like jealousy, intimacy, and the iconic “cigarette kiss.”

“Revy has small tsundere moments with Rock, and she also is quite possessive of him.” “They are closer and care about each other more, but it’s nothing official.” “Her tough exterior serves as a shield, hiding her vulnerabilities and past traumas. In Rock, she finds a confidant who challenges her worldview.”

Dutch • As Lagoon Company’s leader, Dutch brings stability to Revy’s chaos. She respects his pragmatism and follows his lead—even if she rarely acknowledges it outright.

Benny • Benny, the laid-back tech specialist, shares a casual camaraderie with Revy. They trade banter and respect each other’s skills—moments that add levity to her hardened persona.

Eda • Revy and Eda share a sharp-witted, sarcastic friendship. They often pair up for dangerous missions and engage in verbal sparring—Eda frequently teasing Revy about her closeness to Rock.

Overview: Who Is Rock?

Real Name: Rokurō Okajima (Japanese: 岡島 緑郎), commonly known as Rock Nationality: Japanese Affiliation: Lagoon Company (former salaryman at Asahi Heavy Industrial Co.)

⸻

Appearance • Average Japanese build—slender, fair-skinned, black hair with a right-side fringe, and brown eyes . • Always retains his salaryman aesthetic: short-sleeved dress shirt, tie, slacks, and dress shoes—even while working as a pirate in Roanapur .

⸻

Personality & Role • Pacifist diplomat: He prefers words over weapons, reflecting a calm, earnest, and morally considerate nature . • Acts as the heart of the Lagoon Company, offering stability amid the chaos. His decency and ideals often clash with the ruthless criminal world around him . • Skilled negotiator, translator, and trusted advisor. Handles accounting, diplomacy, and errands for the crew . • Multilingual (Japanese, English, Spanish, Romanian, Russian), with additional proficiency in geology and chemistry from his corporate background . • Remarkably high tolerance for alcohol—a byproduct of his former corporate lifestyle . • Though consistently moral, Rock’s exposure to violence wears on him, blurring his sense of right and wrong over time .

⸻

Background & Story • From a well-off yet emotionally detached Tokyo family. He entered college late and felt overshadowed by his highly successful older brother who joined the Japanese government . • Worked as a salaryman for Asahi Industries before being kidnapped by the Lagoon Company during a smuggling operation. His department abandoned him—declaring him legally dead to cover up the scandal . • Chooses to side with the pirates after discovering his company betrayed him. He helps sink a helicopter using the Black Lagoon’s torpedoes—marking the beginning of his new life . • Refuses to return to Japan even when given the opportunity, preferring autonomy in Roanapur despite its dangers .

⸻

Relationships • Holds a moral and emotional counterpoint to his more violent teammates like Revy—often mediating her aggressive impulses through reason . • Earns respect from powerful Roanapur underworld figures—Balalaika, Mr. Chang, Sister Yolanda, Rowan “Jackpot” Pigeon, and Eda (who develops a crush on him), as well as the young Garcia Lovelace . • Dynamic with Revy is perhaps the most compelling—many fans see mutual, unspoken affection and trust developing over time . • Among his peers, Dutch (his rescuer and de facto boss) and Benny (another “normal” guy in a violent world) seem closest to him emotionally .

Eda (Edith Blackwater) – Overview

Appearance • Eda is a Caucasian-American woman in her 30s with long, blonde hair and blue eyes—usually concealed behind her signature angular pink sunglasses, which she wears even when dressed as a nun . • In her nun’s habit, she is rarely seen without chewing gum or smoking . • When off duty from her “nun” guise, she often sports a miniskirt and tight tank top that accentuate her ample physique . • She bears a cross-like tattoo on her upper right arm; its design varies across adaptations—typically a Christian cross with thorns, sometimes accompanied by skulls or heraldic motifs .

Personality • Eda exudes a hot-headed, fiercely independent energy; she isn’t your typical nun . • She’s sharp-witted, often teases or provokes others—especially Revy about her relationship with Rock—and enjoys pushing boundaries . • A fervent American nationalist, her loyalty lies with the U.S. CIA, though she’s dismissive of the NSA . • She possesses a dry sense of humor and a mischievous edge, particularly seen in her banter with Revy and flirtations with Rock .

Background & Cover Identity • Eda, real name Edith Blackwater, poses as a nun within the Rip-Off Church (aka the Church of Violence)—a front for smuggling operations in Roanapur . • She’s actually a seasoned CIA operative, using the church as a safe cover for intelligence operations in Southeast Asia . • She graduated from Harvard University before entering the agency . • Her CIA handler, Ravencroft, issues her assignments. She works closely under Sister Yolanda, the church’s leader, who is aware of her true affiliation .

Story & Role • Eda makes her debut in Episode 7 (“Calm Down, Two Men”)—a tense standoff between her, Revy, and Rock during a weapons deal . • Throughout the series, she provides intel on various operations—most notably monitoring the elusive Grey Fox and manipulating local figures like Mr. Chang . • Her resourcefulness and combat skills—especially with her Glock 17L—make her a capable operative, if not as lethal as Revy .

Relationships & Dynamics • Revy: Their relationship is volatile yet camaraderie-driven. They crack jokes, bicker fiercely, but there’s a mutual respect—even willingness to back each other if it came to a duel . • Rock: Eda has a clear fondness for Rock. She flirts, teases him, and even tries to lure him away from Revy—in a playful, sometimes provocative way . • Church & CIA: She balances a tightrope—reporting to her CIA superior while maintaining the trust of Sister Yolanda and managing her cover in the church

Dutch – Lagoon Company Captain

Appearance

Dutch is a tall, muscular African-American man, around 194 cm (6′4″) tall. He’s bald, sports a close-cropped beard, and typically wears a moss-green flak jacket over a tank top, military fatigues, boots, gold-eared earrings, and round sunglasses .

Personality

A calm, pragmatic, and level-headed leader, Dutch excels at negotiation and strategy, preferring to stay out of direct conflict when possible . He acts as a mentor—especially to Rock—and keeps the crew grounded even in the most volatile situations. On missions that brush against moral lines, he remains committed to completing them responsibly . He’s also pragmatic enough to call out dangerous behavior, such as when he compared Revy’s recklessness to a mass murderer to maintain professionalism .

Background & Story

Dutch claims to be a former U.S. Navy veteran from the Vietnam War, although inconsistencies in his story suggest he may have fabricated parts of his past . There’s a possibility he also operated under the alias La Mouche—a lieutenant colonel in the Burkina Faso Army involved in coup planning . He founded the Lagoon Company, captains the PT-boat Black Lagoon, and operates out of the lawless city of Roanapur .

In the “Rasta Blasta” and “El Baile de la Muerte / Roberta’s Blood Trail” arcs, he guides Rock and the crew through morally complex scenarios, like transporting the young Garcia Lovelace and handling Roberta’s onslaught .

Relationships • Rock: Mentor-like; Dutch provides guidance and emotional support. • Revy: Maintains discipline; they respect each other but occupy contrasting roles. • Balalaika: Holds her respect—she trusts his leadership and owes him once for saving her life .

⸻

Roberta (Rosarita Cisneros) – “Bloodhound of Florencia”

Appearance

Roberta, also known as Rosarita Cisneros, appears as a maid with a modest uniform and glasses. Despite her gentle outward appearance, she conceals a remarkable physical presence and lethal capability .

Personality

Roberta embodies duality: • Gentle caregiver to Garcia Lovelace—devoted, protective, and gentle. • Unrelenting warrior when provoked—she’s ruthless, singularly focused, and driven by trauma .

She harbors deep guilt from her time as a FARC assassin and uses her work for the Lovelace family as a form of atonement . Her mental state is fragile—the OVA Roberta’s Blood Trail shows her abusing antidepressants, experiencing hallucinations, and desensitizing herself with a surreal, almost yandere-like intensity .

Background & Story

Originally part of the FARC and trained in Cuba as an assassin, Roberta deserted the organization when she discovered they served drug cartels. She became a maid and bodyguard for the Lovelace family in Venezuela .

When Garcia is kidnapped and sold by the Colombian mafia to the Lagoon Company, Roberta arrives in Roanapur to get him back, reverting into her fearsome “Bloodhound” persona and drawing the attention of everyone in town—including Hotel Moscow and Dutch’s crew .

During the ensuing chaos, Balalaika intervenes (partially because of a debt of honor to Dutch) and allows Roberta and Garcia to leave safely .

Combat & Abilities

Roberta’s combat skill is almost inhuman—boasting superhuman strength, speed, endurance, martial arts expertise, and profuse weapon mastery. One character even describes her sarcastically as “a killer robot from the future” .

Her arsenal includes: • SPAS-12 shotgun hidden in an umbrella • Barrett M82A1 sniper rifle with grenade launcher • Machine gun suitcase • Grenades under her maid dress • Combat knife, spiked brass knuckles • Antique flintlock rifle of the Lovelace family .

Relationships • Garcia Lovelace: She loves him deeply; their bond drives her actions. • Lagoon Company: Mostly adversarial—she hunts them in pursuit of Garcia. • Balalaika: Gains reluctant respect and protection from her .

Le Majeur

Appearance

Le Majeur is a slender, pale-skinned Japanese woman holding French nationality. She sports short black hair styled into rabbit-like twin tails and wears a bullet-resistant black pantsuit. After an injury, she dons a white medical eyepatch over her left eye. Notably, she has a large tattoo on her back and upper biceps, featuring a design inspired by the kabuki play Aoto Zōshi Hana no Nishikie.

Personality

Le Majeur is generally modest and calm. She remains unflappable even when interrogated by Roanapur criminals and exhibits disciplined behavior—refusing to smoke or use drugs to maintain her physical health. She feels a strong sense of loyalty and indebtedness to those she trusts. The death of her friend “L’auriculaire” haunts her, and she harbors resentment toward Le Pouce over it. Le Majeur also displays a “sister complex,” deeply attached to figures resembling her lost comrade. She quickly bonds with Revy, affectionately calling her “sis.” Music plays a big role in her life—she enjoys both Japanese pop and Western tunes, including Japanese TV openings and “Easy” by the Commodores.

Background & Story

Le Majeur was a core member of Les Cinq Doigts, a covert group within France’s SAC (Service d’Action Civique). The group was composed of women code-named after the five fingers: Le Pouce (thumb), L’index, Le Majeur (middle finger), L’annulaire (ring finger), and L’auriculaire (pinky). They were deployed on dangerous missions—including hunting a target codenamed “La Mouche” in Roanapur.

Following her time in Les Cinq Doigts, Le Majeur finds herself in Roanapur connected to Hotel Moscow (under Balalaika) and eventually intertwines with the Lagoon Company.

Relationships • Balalaika and Hotel Moscow – She’s affiliated by force. • The Lagoon Company (Revy, Rock, Dutch, Benny) – Gradually builds trust, especially forming a close bond with Revy.

⸻

Hänsel and Gretel (“Vampire Twins”)

Appearance

Hänsel and Gretel are Romanian twins with striking silver/white hair and pale violet or gray eyes, often likened to vampire traits. They appear to be around 12–13 years old and share a skinny build and gothic Lolita attire. Gretel wears a long wig (used to swap identities with Hänsel), while Hänsel has short hair. Gretel’s weapon of choice is the M1918A2 BAR rifle, hidden under a blanket; Hänsel wields a sharp battle axe and sometimes carries small sidearms in his jacket.

Personality & Behavior

Their personalities are deeply fractured due to severe childhood trauma. They suffer from Dissociative Identity Disorder, alternating between the personas of “Hänsel” and “Gretel,” and swapping appearances and behaviors accordingly. They have endured extreme abuse—notably forced into child exploitation and violent films. As a result, they developed sadistic urges, believing that killing prolongs their lives. They also display incestuous and vampiric behaviors, even bathing in the blood of their victims.

Despite their derangement, they’re cunning: they use deception, disguises, bribes, and trickery (like using orphans as decoys or distracting enemies with money).

However, glimpses of vulnerability emerge—especially in the anime, when Gretel opens up to Rock, reflecting on their bleak past and showing emotional depth. She even sings to him, eliciting a rare moment of human connection.

Background & Story

Hänsel and Gretel were abandoned in a Romanian orphanage after the revolution and forced into horrific circumstances. The abuse and exploitation they endured gravitationally warped their psyche. Eventually, they were employed by the Roanapur Sicilian Mafia (Verrocchio) to assassinate Balalaika.

In the anime, their mission fails: Hänsel is knocked down in front of Balalaika and shot by a sniper, and Gretel, though almost escaping via the Lagoon Company, is killed by a hitman.

Relationships • Verrocchio (Sicilian Mafia) – They were hired by him. • Balalaika – Their intended target. • The Lagoon Company and Rock – Engage in brief but emotionally charged interactions, especially with Gretel. • Each Other – Their closeness is disturbed, identity-swapping, and incestuous.

Balalaika (Sofiya Pavlovena)

Appearance • Tall (about 180 cm / 5’11”), slender, with pale skin, long blonde hair in a high ponytail, and striking blue eyes. She bears noticeable scars across her face, neck, chest, and legs—and sports a distinctive mole beneath her left eye. • Her attire typically includes a wine-red skirt suit, black pantyhose, and heels. When traveling, she drapes a Russian military coat with Soviet airborne insignia over her shoulders.

Personality & Background • A former Soviet Airborne Forces captain and combat veteran of the Afghan war, her nickname “Balalaika” is slang for the Dragunov sniper rifle. • Scarred by torture, she became pragmatic, ruthlessly professional, and highly strategic. Her soldiers—especially her right-hand man Boris—are deeply loyal to her. • As Hotel Moscow’s leader in Roanapur’s criminal underworld, she values trust and profit, utilizing tactics ranging from diplomacy to sheer brutality.

Relationships • Commands intense loyalty from her subordinates—particularly Boris, who cares for her deeply despite her ruthlessness. • She respects Dutch and the Lagoon Company, working with them when mutual respect and discretion align.

⸻

Shenhua

Appearance • Shenhua is visually striking: long black hair that falls past her waist (with a fringe partially covering one eye), wearing a rose-colored Chinese cheongsam with a white jacket. She carries throwing knives strapped to her legs and sports red tassel earrings, fingernail polish, and eyeliner.

Personality & Background • A proud Taiwanese assassin tied to Mister Chang and the Hong Kong Triad. Her weapon of choice is dual kukri blades connected by rope—allowing her to throw and retrieve swiftly. • She communicates in broken English (“Chinglish”), not caring for grammar—a trait that earns her teasing from peers like Revy. • Her worldview emphasizes blades over guns—guns run out of bullets; blades won’t.

Relationships • Primarily connected to Mister Chang and the Hong Kong Triad. She interacts occasionally with the Lagoon Company, though formally affiliated with Chang.

Benny – Profile Overview

Appearance • Young, slender frame, standing around 181.5 cm (5’11”); thin facial hair along his jawline, pale skin, green eyes, and long blond hair in a ponytail (later transitioning into a short mullet). He typically wears thin, square glasses, an orange Hawaiian shirt with a green leaf pattern, tan pants, and white sneakers.

Personality • Easygoing & Non-violent: Benny rarely engages in combat and readily admits to Rock that “the two of them are not gunfighters.” • Realistic & Hardened: He’s accustomed to the moral gray areas of their work and often supports turning a blind eye to Revy and Dutch’s harsher methods. • He supports Rock emotionally, helping him toughen up amid traumatic events. Dutch remarks that there’s a “deep darkness” within Benny still hidden.

Background & Story • Originally a university affiliate in Florida. Facing backlash from both the FBI and the mafia in the early ’90s, he would likely have died if not rescued by Revy. • After being saved, he joined the Lagoon Company in Roanapur and has been their go-to mechanic, hacker, and electronic specialist for years. • Serves as boat co-pilot (PT Boat “Black Lagoon”), driver (of various classic cars like a ’68 Plymouth Road Runner and ’65 Pontiac GTO), and communications hub during operations.

Relationships • Rock: Quick friends and confidants; Benny often mentors Rock and offers support through tough moments. • Revy & Dutch: Accepts their violent tendencies pragmatically. Dutch calls him “Benny-Boy,” showing camaraderie. • Jane (girlfriend): A romantic partner from Roanapur; their relationship brings an affectionate, humorous energy to Benny’s life.

Mister Chang – Profile Overview

Appearance • Chinese man, about 180 cm (5’11”), skinny build, pale skin, slicked-back short black hair. Always wears dark sunglasses—even indoors—and sharp black suits with a vest over a white shirt. His look echoes Chow Yun-fat’s character in The Bund. • Dual-wields customized Beretta 76 pistols engraved with “Heavenly Emperor” (天帝). • Smokes frequently—his cigarette is a consistent part of his visual identity.

Personality • Charismatic & Easygoing: Despite his criminal status, he remains light-hearted and calm—even amid chaos. • Hypocrisy-Intolerant: Chang abhors hypocrisy and unmasked deception.

Background & Affiliations • Boss of the Hong Kong Triad’s Thai branch in Roanapur. Former Royal Hong Kong Police Force member. • Commands a network including Shenhua, Shadow Falcon, and others.

Relationships • Balalaika: Holds deep respect for her. She teases him (calls him “Baby”); he dubs her “Fry Face.” • Rock: Tense dynamic—Chang sees Rock as somewhat hypocritical. Chang also believes Rock’s moral choices could shape the fate of Roanapur. • Revy: Shares a stylistic bond through dual-wielding pistols. He may have influenced her technique. Revy deeply respects him. • Eda: His relationship with the CIA agent is adversarial, highlighting his protectionist instincts for Roanapur.

Fabiola Iglesias – Black Lagoon

Appearance • Fabiola is a petite young Venezuelan girl, often called the “mini-maid.” She wears a black French maid uniform with white gloves—too big for her small frame—and sports dark green hair and matching eyes, typically styled up under a white bun cover. • She conceals an impressive arsenal: twin MAG-7 pump-action shotguns tucked into her sleeve, a China Lake grenade launcher on her back, and a knife hidden in her shoe heel.

Personality • Fabiola carries herself with honor and courtesy, even toward those she views as lesser. • She practices capoeira, choosing a martial art that emphasizes control over lethality—reflecting her deep-seated reluctance to kill. • Despite her skill, she shows clear emotional turmoil after causing a death. She dislikes killing and becomes enraged when witnessing merciless violence, such as Revy’s treatment of a wounded soldier. • Fabiola deeply cares for Garcia Lovelace—though less obsessively than Roberta—and fiercely protects him while maintaining professional boundaries.

Background • Raised in the slums of Caracas within a large poor family of eleven, Fabiola first stunned Revy by recounting a story where her mother severely punished her for stealing a CD player for her brother—but she shrugged it off as an act of love. • She learned capoeira from watching a dojo in her neighborhood. With few opportunities, she accepted a position in the Lovelace household through a distant relative’s connection. • She serves as the second maid and bodyguard to Garcia, especially entrusted to care for him when Roberta is away.

Key Story Role • In the “El Baile de la muerte / Roberta’s Blood Trail” arc, Fabiola ventures into Roanapur with Garcia to seek Roberta. Her striking resemblance to Roberta shocks the locals, though they’re soon surprised by her deadly efficiency. • At the Yellow Flag bar, men underestimate her—until she stabs one in the groin with her shoe blade and unleashes her shotguns on the gang. • She remains calm and protective throughout the mission, defending Garcia from threats, confronting Rock over manipulations, and even taking an arrow for him. • When Roberta nearly kills Garcia in a rampage, Fabiola is instrumental in shielding him and aiding his plan to snap Roberta back to reality using blanks—which works and deescalates the crisis. • After the arc, Fabiola returns to Venezuela with Garcia and Roberta, closing the chapter on the conflict.

Appearance & Background • Garcia Fernando Lovelace is Venezuelan and stands at about 138 cm (4’6”) tall. He has pale skin, short blond hair, and brown eyes, usually dressed in polos and shorts; in formal scenes, he dons a suit with a tie and long socks. • He is the sole heir of the Lovelace family—the twelfth lord—and the only surviving child after his father’s assassination.

Personality • Garcia matures quickly—shrewd, confident, and deeply proud of his family name. Despite moments of youthful immaturity like pouting or entitlement, he embraces his duty after his father’s death. • He treats his maids—Roberta and Fabiola—as family and invokes their loyalty in return. • Fans often speculate his personality aligns with an INFP—thoughtful, empathetic, idealistic, and emotionally driven—though this is interpretative rather than canonical.

Key Story Role • “Rasta Blasta” Arc: Garcia is kidnapped by a cartel as leverage against his father. The Lagoon Company ends up retrieving him—Rock cleverly recognizes him as Lovelace once he references unique details like the family dog. • Return to Roanapur: After the rescue, Garcia comes back—now emotionally stronger—with Fabiola to rescue Roberta. • He shows remarkable courage: faking a murder using blanks to halt Roberta’s deadly rampage and remind her of her promise not to harm him—successfully restoring her sanity. • Despite the chaos, Garcia remains calm and unwavering, demonstrating emotional growth and resilience uncommon for his age.

⸻

Fabiola & Garcia’s Relationship • Protector and Protected: Fabiola’s loyalty and skill are rooted in her respect and care for Garcia; she keeps him safe but doesn’t blur boundaries. • Balanced Duo Dynamics: Where Roberta’s protective love verges on obsession, Fabiola’s approach is grounded and motivated by duty—earning her Garcia’s respect on equal footing. • Some fans even suggest—and debate—that Fabiola may be a more fitting partner for Garcia as they are closer in age and share grounded values.

Ginji Matsuzaki

Appearance • A towering Japanese man around 194 cm (6′4″) tall, with a broad build . • Features include short, spiky black hair with shaved sides, pale skin, a short goatee, and thin sunglasses . • He wears a dark green overcoat, white shirt, tan pants, open-toe sandals, and displays extensive yakuza-style tattoos—such as a gashadokuro skull, samurai, floral and flame motifs—across his back and arms .

Personality • Calm, serious, and outwardly imposing; considered just as vicious and sadistic as Revy, but with his own restrained composure . • Fiercely loyal—especially toward Yukio—he harbors a desire for her to escape the criminal world and live a normal life . • He once worked peacefully as a street stall vendor, enjoying a quiet existence away from violence .

Background & Story Role • Formerly an elite assassin known as “Manslayer Ginji” (Hitokiri Ginji), revered for his katana skills and disdain for firearms . • His swordsmanship is exceptional—able to slice bullets in mid-flight and dodge multiple gunshots—relying solely on his blade . • After retiring, he took up street vending, hoping for a peaceful life—but returned when threats to Yukio and the Washimine Group arose . • Ultimately, Ginji faces Revy in a prearranged duel and is killed—in the anime through a neck shot, while the manga depicts a more graphic outcome .

Relationships • Deeply loyal and possibly romantically tied to Yukio Washimine; some sources hint at him being her love interest . • Acts as her protector, devoted both to her personal safety and her desire for a normal life . • Revy calls him “Jumbo” due to his size—and recognizes in him a kindred spirit from the darker side of life .

⸻

Yukio Washimine

Appearance • An 18-year-old high school senior with a lean frame, long waist-length black hair with bangs, pale skin, and a small mole below the left side of her lip . • Often seen in oval-shaped glasses and her school uniform. In the anime, she briefly carries a Stechkin APS pistol .

Personality • Initially a typical student, she’s thrust into the world of yakuza leadership under extreme circumstances. • Driven by a sense of duty, she chooses to lead the Washimine Group after her father’s death, hoping to honor his legacy . • Fans viewed her tragically: one commented, “She made two important choices … ‘I chose this. To do what I could for my father and the people who respect him.’” • Others saw her as impulsive and inexperienced: “She was so ignorant … If you want a position like that as a female, you have to prove that you’re 10x more brutal.”

Background & Story Role • Daughter of Ryūzō Washimine, the 13th boss of the Washimine yakuza; she becomes koumichō (acting boss) following his death . • Overwhelmed yet determined, she fantasizes about escaping to Roanapur with Ginji, trying to escape her fate . • In the anime, she orchestrates a dramatic plan—including a bank robbery and kidnapping Rock—actions entirely absent in the manga . • Her downfall follows Ginji’s death, culminating in a tragic end .

Relationships • Closely tied to Ginji, who deeply loves and protects her; their bond is central to her narrative arc . • The dynamic between them is pivotal—her struggles and ultimate fate are deeply entwined with his presence and loss

Personality • A strict perfectionist: insisted on precision in her counterfeit plates, went two months over deadline, and exceeded budget by $200,000 rather than compromise quality • Prideful and uncompromising about her craft • Sexually liberal—Revy joked Jane was a “bonafide fuck freak” per Benny’s observation • Multilingual: speaks English and some German

Background & Story • Real name: Janet Bhai; also known as Jane • A professional money counterfeiter and cyber-hacker • Leads an international counterfeiting group; also part of the “Highwaymen Forum” hacking collective • Arrived in Roanapur to create counterfeit money plates for the Nuevo Laredo Cartel; ultimately flees with help from the Lagoon Company

Relationships • Befriends and becomes Benny’s girlfriend during her escape storyline • Other mentions: connected with Theo (fellow counterfeiter), Maggie D, and Rodney XX • In the fandom, there’s humorous speculation about Revy being jealous of Jane’s relationship with Benny

Personality • Sociopathic tendencies: shows no remorse while dismembering victims with her chainsaw; makes morbid jokes (e.g. comparing a stained mattress to jam-smeared bread) • Suffers from emotional issues, including depression; loses composure if her voice box (electrolarynx) is removed—even becomes catatonic • Has a mellowness about her but is also emotionally vulnerable—blushes when made the center of attention • Values close bonds: shares a sister-like connection with Shenhua, Lotton, Bunny the Undertaker, and others

Covers roughly Manga Volumes 1–3 (Chapters 0–21). Key arcs include: • Pilot/Rock’s Abduction – Rock joins the Lagoon Company. • The Roberta Arc – Introduction of the deadly maid Roberta. • Neo-Nazi Arc • Hansel & Gretel Arc • Takenaka Arc .

Adapts through Volume 6, up to Chapter 43. Includes: • Yakuza Arc • Greenback Jane • Twin Vampires Arc • Japan Arc

Rasta Blasta Arc (Rock & Roberta Meet)

This arc introduces Roberta and sets the tone for her volatile relationship with Rock and the Lagoon Company. • How It Begins: The Lagoon Company—Revy, Dutch, Benny, and Rock (formerly Rokurō Okajima)—are hired by a South American cartel to smuggle guns. Instead, they discover they have to rescue Garcia Lovelace, a young boy abducted by a rival cartel . • Enter the Maid: Roberta, the fiercely loyal maid and former FARC guerrilla, bursts into Roanapur like a whirlwind. In full maid uniform—and armed to the teeth—she launches a ruthless attack in the Yellow Flag bar to rescue Garcia . • Clash with Revy: Roberta chases the Lagoon Company through the streets, and when Revy confronts her, a furious firefight erupts in a shipping yard. Balalaika’s intervention stops the chaos, and Roberta and Garcia are escorted out of Roanapur . • Character Dynamics: This arc establishes Roberta as both gentle toward Garcia and brutally deadly in conflict. Rock is caught between his pacifist instincts and the violence Roberta brings .

Roberta’s Blood Trail (OVA – AKA “El Baile de la Muerte” Arc)

A haunting and action-heavy continuation where Roberta’s grief and vengeance push Roanapur to its limits. • Triggering Event: Roberta’s master, Diego Lovelace, is killed in a CIA black ops mission gone wrong. The attack spurs Roberta to return to Roanapur in a relentless quest for revenge . • Rock’s Involvement: Garcia enlists Rock’s help to stop Roberta before her rampage draws international forces to the city—a dangerous mission given Roberta’s combat prowess and fragile mental state . • Carnage Unleashed: Roberta tears through Roanapur, turning the city into a battlefield. She becomes a near-superhuman force, fueled by grief—and perhaps unhinged by antidepressants and hallucinations . • Climactic Showdown: A massive gun battle unfolds involving multiple factions—including US soldiers, FARC members, and criminal gangs—leading to a tense final confrontation set in a jungle under night-vision lighting . • Emotional Fallout: Roberta sustains extreme injuries

Neo-Nazi Arc

Also known as the Nazi art salvage arc, this storyline unfolds in Season 1 (early episodes) and centers on a darkly ironic mission: • To the Depths: The Lagoon Company is tasked by a mysterious collector to retrieve a valuable painting from a sunken German U-boat (U-1324). Revy and Rock suit up and dive into the depths to recover it. • On the Surface: Meanwhile, neo-Nazi forces — members of the Aryan Socialist Union — guard the site. An underwater struggle turns into a surface bloodbath, as Revy unleashes chaos on their ship when they discover the Lagoon Company’s presence. • Betrayal and Test: Ratchman, the neo-Nazi leader, ultimately learns he was just being tested by his superiors — he was expected to fail as propaganda. Revy and Dutch later eliminate him in a brutal confrontation.

Zeus-heavy, explosive, and laced with biting dark humor — this arc underscores the moral ambiguity the protagonists navigate, all while showcasing high-voltage action and a nihilistic take on ideology.

⸻

Hansel & Gretel Arc

One of the darkest and most emotionally unsettling arcs in the series — often known as the Bloodsport Fairy-Tale arc:

The Twins • Origins of horror: Hänsel and Gretel are Romanian orphan twins, survivors of extreme abuse, dissociative identity disorder, and forced participation in child exploitation. Now sadistic assassins working for the Sicilian Mafia, they believe murder extends their lifespan. • Rampage in Roanapur: Assigned to assassinate Balalaika, they instead slaughter dozens of innocents, torture her men, and eventually turn on their employer for the thrill.

The Downfall • One twin captured: In a tense confrontation, Balalaika’s snipers fatally wound Hänsel during an ambush. • Rock’s compassion: Gretel escapes and encounters Rock. She reveals their traumatic past, sings eerily, and shares nihilistic philosophy — a world corrupted into murder. Moved, Rock embraces her, symbolizing a flicker of human compassion.

Takenaka Arc (“Goat, Jihad, Rock ’n’ Roll”)

When it occurs: Between July and December 1995, situated after the Hansel & Gretel arc and before the Yakuza arc .

Synopsis: • Captured by Hezbollah: Rock is taken hostage by Masahiro Takenaka, a calm and rational former Japanese Red Army activist aligned with Hezbollah. Takenaka interrogates Rock, challenging his beliefs and drawing a contrast between their respective convictions . • A philosophical clash: Takenaka discusses his ideological persistence, rooted in giving meaning to past sacrifices—even when others abandoned their cause once comfort arrived. Rock sees a reflection of his own conflicted identity . • Rescue mission: Revy and Shenhua lead a daring rescue. As Takenaka maintains composure, Shenhua’s swordplay cuts a brutal path through their pursuers. Meanwhile, Ibraha, Takenaka’s comrade, increasingly clashes with Takenaka over tactical decisions . • Betrayal and retreat: Tensions climax when Ibraha refuses to retreat. Takenaka shoots him, declaring ideals cannot blind you to reality. He then orders the others to withdraw, enabling Rock and the others to escape with the documents . • Aftermath: Rock is admonished by Revy not to be captured again. Takenaka, ever composed, later reflects on identity—remarking that he’s “an enemy of the state” .

Themes & Insight: • Ideological extremes: Takenaka embodies rigid conviction, contrasting with Rock’s nascent pragmatism—highlighting what Rock could become if he fully embraced the underworld. • Moral ambiguity: The arc deepens Rock’s character—his moral compass, his capacity for empathy, and the choices that define his new reality. • Fan reflections: “…he is an excellent parallel to Rock and gave us a glimpse of what could happen to Rock if he decided to fully commit himself to the criminal life.”

Yakuza Arc (Fujiyama Gangsta Paradise)

When it occurs: Around January 1996, marking one full year since Rock joined the Lagoon Company .

Synopsis: • Diplomatic mission to Japan: Rock accompanies Balalaika and Revy to Tokyo as her interpreter during negotiations between the Washimine Group, a Yakuza clan, and their rivals, the Kōsa Council . • Power struggle unfolds: Hotel Moscow (Balalaika’s faction) agrees to help restore the Washimine clan’s strength in exchange for expanded operations in Japan. Tensions rise between tradition, loyalty, and cold pragmatism . • Yukio’s rise and fall: Yukio Washimine—16-year-old heir—reluctantly steps into leadership as violence escalates. Rock tries to protect her from the criminal world he’s growing accustomed to. But the chaos spirals: Hotel Moscow double-crosses and both Yakuza sides are decimated in the ensuing gang war. Yukio is left to lead amidst dishonor and bloodshed . • Rock’s internal conflict: Confronted with Yukio’s transformation and the weight of violence he helped trigger, Rock is forced to confront his place in this morally gray world—and whether he’s capable of real change or redemption .

Themes & Insight: • Innocence corrupted: Yukio’s tragic arc reflects the cost of power and the erosion of ideals under pressure. • Rock’s evolution: He transitions from detached observer to emotional participant—questioning whether his neutrality shields him or distances him from humanity.

Greenback Jane (“Greenback Jane Arc”)

Anime Summary (Episode 16: Greenback Jane) • Jane, a skilled counterfeiter working for the Nuevo Laredo Cartel, falls out of favor after missing deadlines and overspending. When her partner is murdered, she flees and seeks sanctuary at the “Rip-Off” Church run by Eda and Yolanda. Initially rebuffed, she finally earns a chance to plead her case. • Meanwhile, Revy and Eda, spot a potential profit in Jane’s escape. They team up with bounty hunters and Rock to orchestrate a plot—using Jane as bait for cash and counterfeiting plates. The result is an explosive battle outside the church and high-octane comedic chaos throughout Roanapur.

Manga Details • The arc spans several chapters in Volume 6 (Chapters 38–43): • Jane confronts her cartel overseer Elvis, who kills her assistant Theo to pressure her into completing the job in 48 hours. • A frantic escape follows, with Jane outwitting guards and armed mercenaries pursuing her into the city. • The climax unfolds aboard the Laguna Company’s boat as they evade bounty hunters and chaos erupts on deck.

Tone and Reception • This arc serves as a lighter, nearly comedic interlude amidst the darker storylines—offering energetic action and quirky characters amid the usual carnage of Roanapur. • Fans often appreciate it as a fun break in the narrative, praising the dynamic energy amid otherwise grim arcs.

Twin Vampires Arc (“Hansel & Gretel” / Vampire Twins Comen)

Summary • A mysterious spike in gangland carnage grips Roanapur. Balalaika of Hotel Moscow investigates the murders, discovering that a pair of undead-like twin children—Hansel and Gretel—are the murderers. Their eerie behavior and Romanian origins, with vampiric overtones, unsettle the city. • The twins, victims of horrific childhood abuse, have become deranged, believing that killing prolongs their lives. They revel in their sadism—and even bathe in their victims’ blood. • Balalaika orchestrates a calculated execution of Hansel. Gretel, briefly aided by Lagoon Company, is shot in a betrayal—her death marks a tragically emotional end.

Themes & Impact • This arc is among the series’ darkest, exploring trauma, humanity, and pure malevolence. It emphasizes Black Lagoon’s ability to humanize even its most monstrous characters. • Fans often cite it as emotionally devastating and challenging—not an easy watch but a compelling one.

Japan Arc (Fujiyama Gangsta Paradise)

Overview

This arc brings the action beyond Roanapur and plunges Rock into his former life in Tokyo—forcing him to confront the gulf between his corporate past and his mercenary present. • Setup: Rock has spent nearly a year embedded with the Lagoon Company. Hotel Moscow (led by Balalaika) ropes him in as an interpreter for delicate negotiations with the Washimine yakuza clan. Revy accompanies them as his bodyguard.

Plot Highlights • Tokyo returns: The arc opens with Rock waking up in a Japanese hotel room, startlingly distant from Roanapur’s chaos. He strolls through snowy Tokyo with Revy, who’s both irked and amused by cultural differences—like being ignored by locals when she speaks back in kind. • Corporate underworld: Balalaika enters talks with the Washimine clan to help overthrow their rivals, the Kōsa Council, in exchange for territorial favors in Japan. • New faces, old echoes: Rock meets: • Yukio Washimine, a 16-year-old heir more interested in textbooks than yakuza politics. • Ginji the Manslayer, a hulking, katana-wielding protector, whose dynamic with Revy evokes Rock’s own bond with her. • Tensions boil over: The alliance with Hotel Moscow shatters, leading to a brutal gang war. Both Washimine and Kōsa factions are nearly decimated. Yukio, forced into leadership, stands amid ruins with Ginji by her side. • Rock’s internal battle: As violence unfolds, Rock sees the darkness he’s come to accept—and is forced to question whether he can (or should) remain in this world. • Anime-only flash added: In a few added scenes, anime-only moments show Yukio and Ginji committing a bank robbery as a diversion, kidnapping Rock briefly, and staging a van chase. These scenes do not appear in the manga.

Timeline Context • This arc is set in January 1996, roughly one year after Rock joined the Lagoon Company (which began in early 1995).

Why It Stands Out • Emotional weight & setting shift: Tokyo’s winter offers a stark contrast to Roanapur’s heat, mirroring Rock’s alienation from both worlds. • Character parallels: Rock and Yukio, Revy and Ginji—each pair reflects and refracts themes of duty, identity, and moral compromise. • Fan appreciation: This arc is consistently cited as one of the series’ best—praising its balance of tone, character development, and dramatic tension.
