France has shoulder-length blond hair and blue eyes, and has a slight amount of facial hair which he believes makes him look like a "big brother" (it is said to represent the Gorges du Tarn, or Tarn Gorges). He wears a long blue coat and matching capelet, with red pants and brown boots. He is often depicted with a rose, which is also used to censor his genitals in his nude scenes. When France initially appeared in the webcomic, his hair was drawn shorter and less wavy, but was drawn longer over time as the art style changed and evolved. He also originally wore white spats over his boots, a detail that was dropped in later artwork. France was once a large nation, but after Napoleon Bonaparte had died, he was no longer good in wars and instead attracted tourists to his country with his wine. He has an intense rivalry with England and loves to argue with him over trivial topics (one example is arguing over "who is more perverted"). His hobbies are manipulation activities, agriculture, fashion design, sketching, singing, and telephones, as well as wandering around the art museums and fashion boutiques of Paris. He likes places that are a little odd or chic. France is infatuated with most of the nations and is known to make blatant sexual comments at every opportunity and is very affectionate, often shown streaking or touching other nations inappropriately. He is attracted to beautiful things, which include men and women of any age (supported by statements such as "Sure, I'll settle for boys! Boys are the best!" and "This onii-san here loves pure and innocent children like you." in response to a fan not knowing the meaning of the term "tachi") and maybe even some non-human beings. He said "be gentle to the ladies and be gentle to the earth" is his motto. He has admitted to being "the dandiest among the dandies." He loves himself so much that he does not bother to remember English and considers French the "language of love." In addition, he has referred to the others as insignificant characters. He likes men who have exquisite bodies and give him a good impression, and has no preference in their personalities, so long as they are not loud like England. He said he would like cool but passionate women and might latch on best to someone who is good at singing. He also mentioned, in response to that the French supposedly fall in love due to other's body odors, that a faint, flowery scent could have him curled up in pleasure. He stated that he is afraid of computers, Germany (and that he supposedly hates Germans in general, despite that he seems to get along with both brothers as of recent), Russia, Switzerland, whenever England is angry, and possibly Turkey. He stated this through a response to a fan, thus over the computer, and that doing so was bad enough for him. It seems that gardening relaxes him, and that he is not intimidated by other technologies, as he claimed to be playing "Bokosuka", a video game, with Germany and England. In response to another fan suggesting their lack of will to stand near him because of his overbearing scent, he stated that he only wore a little perfume. He has referenced his old age several times, saying things like how his waist is always creaking, his back hurts, and that he had to surrender to sleep early in the day. Despite this, he gets upset when said that he is a grandpa as opposed to a big brother, and claims he is still young. Austria Main article: Austria Not much is known about these two's relationship, although in Big Brother France And The Frying Pan! France is seen outside Austria's window, ranting about how much he desires him, and talking about how good looking and talented Austria is. In the Christmas Rampage 2007 strips, he also tricks Austria into stripping down in order to get Hungary a hat, yet this may have only been to make Prussia feel better. In Hetalia: World Series Episode 25 of the anime it is stated that France and Austria do not get along. England Main article: England Despite both being members of the Allied forces, England and France have a deep-rooted historical rivalry between them. While they can be seen to constantly argue with each other over the littlest things (like language and culture), they appear to have a level of respect for each other and are quick to team up with each other if a third party should enter the argument. France even tried to marry England to save his country once, though neither of them really wanted it. In strips focusing on England's childhood, he is often shown being picked on by a preteen France, who, on one occasion, scoffs at him for not growing his hair long - and when England's long hair turns out a mess, France teases him by saying he will cut it into a "cool" style - by cutting it back to the style he had before. In Crossing Through the Year 1000, the two younger countries are fooled into believing that the world will soon be over, and England agrees to let France pretend to have conquered him, since it is only for a little while. They later reminisce about their childhood when Japan makes the same mistake. In the movie Hetalia: Axis Powers: Paint it, White!, they said that "they have an undesirable relationship, but indestructible in their heart; they get along very well". Germany Main article: Germany The state of their relationship depends on the specified time period however, generally, like England, Germany and France have a history of being one another's enemies, and as such the two do not seem to get along. In Let's Think About The G8 members, when Germany suggested France be removed from the group, he argued that they had been actually getting along well recently. In Kusogame, the two and America went to a maid cafe in Japan together. Both are set in the present day. During his April Fools site jacking, he seemed to know a fair amount about him, especially that he, like Italy, often ran around naked, thus he needed a different idea of what to do to him as he had been stripping the others (in the end he forced him into a maid cosplay and cat ears). Monaco Main article: Monaco Monaco is France's younger sister and is solely dependent on him for economic and diplomatic strength, as well as intervention in other affairs. Due to this, Monaco often accepts his various requests. Italy Veneziano Main article: Italy Veneziano France grew up with a small Chibitalia, but after Chibitalia returned from spending time with Roman Empire, France only wanted to control him. Italy refers to France as "France nii-chan" in strips set in both the past and present. Once Italy had grown into a teenager, he visited France again, resulting in the older man suddenly becoming enthusiastically attracted to him. During the visit, Italy saw the word "intercourse" in a book and asked him what the definition was. France replied by saying that intercourse is something you do with someone you like, then proceeded to ask "So Italy, do you like me?" (This was changed in the anime to France using body language to express the meaning of intercourse). France seems to have a soft spot for Italy, becoming frantic when England suggests they spread rumors about Italy and responding with "I know he's kind of dumb, and he's weak and useless, but he's not a bad guy...". He then proceeds to break down in tears, causing England to note that France, while always insulting Germany, never really brings himself to badmouth Italy. Spain Main article: Spain The two get along rather well, having grown up and fought in wars together, though Spain remains oblivious to France's more perverted tendencies and cannot see why Romano hates him. It is said in production notes by Himaruya that their relationship is actually undesirable, yet the two remain inseparable. Recently, it seems Spain is aware that France is a bad influence on him, calling him "despicable" before defeating him in The Battle of Garigliano. with the help of his pet bull. France's first bird named Pierre is used for communication with him. Russia Main article: Russia Russia and France seem to get along well. Russia sees France as a person worth seeking advice from, while France seems to care about how Russia feels, often inquiring about how Russia seems happy after the gatherings of the Allied Forces. When Russia and other countries went to France's home, Russia seemed to be really happy when staying at France's house. It made France happy knowing that Russia was enjoying it. Francis’s language always consists of disgustingly sweet pet names, always speaking french, flirting (even if angry), saying crude things about another’s body, and expressing desires to assault, have sex with, or other weird things. He is a CREEP. Francis is also seen as saying weird things, and enjoying it when the person who he’s giving his affections to is in distress or yells at him to stop or anything of the sort. He LOVESSD when people play hard to get. he loves it a lot. he’s inlove with Arthur Kirkand (personification of England) and he’s been yearning for Arthur to spare him a glance or a touch for years. Sometimes he refuses intimacy from women because he wants to keep himself clean so Arthur will be happy. He’s been wanting to be gentle, hold, kiss, and nuture Arthur for 30 years. ARTHUR England has messy, short blond hair and lime-green eyes. According to France, he's rather slender. In World War II, he dresses in a green dress military uniform, which consists of a green jacket, a brown Sam Browne Belt (the over-the-right-shoulder-and-waist-belt), green pants tucked into his boots, off-white shirt (sort of off-yellow in the manga and webcomic in the colored drawings), a tie that's a shade of green that's slightly darker than the rest of his uniform, and brown boots that almost come up to his knees. Himaruya has stated that he dresses smart casual most of the time, and as a punk when he's out for fun. His eyebrows are very prominent and bushy, despite that he apparently trims them. Himaruya mentions that his eyebrows were cursed into bushiness. They are a trait that is shared by his younger brother Sealand, as well as Australia, Hong Kong, and Wy. He also happens to be the same height as France. In the original manga, his hair seemed to be golden blond, but in the first four seasons of the anime, it is bright yellow. The first four seasons of the anime also exaggerated the size of his eyebrows. England is a fanciful, blunt, obstinate former pirate who used to torment Spain. In modern times he claims to be a gentleman; however, he is cynical, sharp-tongued, prone to rough speech, and yearns for the golden years. He often uses British vocabulary, such as wanker, Yank (Yankee), bloody, twit, and git. He is noted for being horrible at cooking which has caused America, his former charge, to have "bad" taste in food. he sees: Alfred Freedom Jones (America), Matthew Williams (Canada), Peter (Sealand), Hong Kong, Wy, Australia all as his kids and he takes care of them like a father. England is also, apparently, the "king of losing things", and France has described him as "somehow extremely useless when it comes to matters not pertaining to himself or America". He can be described as "spacey" because of his strong belief in magic, spirits, fairies, and other fantasy creatures. He has the ability to perform magic, such as spells and curses, and can also summon demons and other magical creatures. He is able to communicate with supernatural beings and is not limited to creatures from his homeland, being able to interact with youkai and spirits from Japanese folklore. He also happens to have fantasy friends, such as a flying bunny, unicorns, fairies, gnomes, and Captain Hook, but oddly enough he did not believe in Santa Claus until Finland came and brought them presents. Despite this, England often ridicules America's belief in aliens and Tony. According to the author's notes, England's interests include embroidery, craftsmanship, literature, rock music, and giving scathing criticisms to America's movies. He appears to be sharp-witted and surprisingly creative, although he seems to have rather bad luck. According to the author, he is rarely afraid of anything, and is rather interested in ghost stories, especially if he can use them to startle America. He also seems to be very stubborn and strong-willed and does not easily succumb to stress or pressure. He is shown to be startlingly mature at times and is very friendly with young or cute people and magical creatures. He also has a quite strong sense of responsibility and has been seen scolding France and America when they don't take things seriously. In some recent notes, the author has stated that England has a very rich and unlimited personality and that he can't decide whether England is a serious person or not. Because of his status as an island nation, England is pretty distant and prefers to work alone. Perhaps because of this, he does not know how to express himself, leading to others often misunderstanding him. He is also depicted as being self-deprecating or tsundere. For example, despite his generally harsh behavior, he is definitely stated to have a softer side and seems to genuinely care for other nations. This is illustrated by the fact that he likes giving them advice, yet specifically mentions that he "does not do it because he's worried about them". Despite all this, he highly values his country's pride, and sometimes comes over as very arrogant. Despite his cynical, realistic view of the world, he is said to be a "quite a romanticist before he goes to sleep." When drunk, he suddenly becomes very nostalgic, and the next morning, he'll pretend that nothing has happened. Also, every year when the Fourth of July comes around, his condition collapses. In a blog post, England is depicted as not being able to swim to illustrate how British characters can't swim in movies. It has been mentioned that England has brothers, one representing Scotland, and the others presumably Wales and Northern Ireland, who hate him and used to drive him away with stones and arrows when he was a child, and even went as far as to mail him curses. In older media and especially merchandise (such as CD boxes or the 2008 trading cards set), England used to be referred to as "UK". This was true both for Japanese and English-language content: on TCG cards and all character CD covers, the name used was "UK" written in Latin script; in Pub and GO! England refers to himself as the full name of "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland". Funnily enough, he says that after introducing himself as simply "England", which fuels the common misconception among foreigners that real-world England and the UK are the same entity. This lead to a long-lasting confusion among fans, and was probably due to poorly established canon at the time as well as marketing or production decisions being outside of Himaruya's control, when it came to merch. However, it has since then been confirmed[citation needed] that England is not the personification of the whole United Kingdom, and the formal appearance of Wales, Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland in World☆Stars put a definitive end to the confusion. In an extra comic posted on Himaruya's Twitter,[5] England is designated as representative of the entire United Kingdom at official events (such as world meetings), as part of a compromise about household rules with the other UK countries. Relationships America: When the young America was discovered by Finland, England and France fought for the right to control him. England had wanted the title and claim so much that he had managed to sneak a quick meet with America and establish a small bond with him before America later chose to be with England. Since then, England took his role as America's guardian very seriously and did everything he could to care for the young nation while still having fun by scaring the young boy while dressed in Halloween costumes. However, their relationship became greatly strained when America sought his own independence and the two fought each other in the Revolution where England ultimately decided to give America his freedom as he did not wish to harm him. Though their relationship remained tense for several years afterwards, England still cared for America and looked out for him when he could. When intoxicated, England often makes references to being left heartbroken for centuries and it is heavily believed he means America no longer needing him. Their relationship seemed to recover over the next several decades although England still often criticizes America's choices as both his own country and the self-proclaimed leader of the Allied Forces. France: Despite the fact that both are members of the Allied forces, England and France have a deep-rooted historical rivalry. While they often have petty disagreements, they appear to respect each other and are quick to team up if a third party enters their argument. France once tried to marry England to save his country, even though neither of them really wanted it. In strips focusing on England's childhood, he is often picked on by a pre-teen France. On one occasion, he scoffs at England for not growing out his hair, but when England's does let his hair grow, it turns into a mess; France teases him, saying he'll cut it into a "cool" style only to cut it back to its original style. In Crossing Through the Year 1000, the two younger countries are fooled into believing that the world will end soon, and England agrees to let France pretend to have conquered him, since it is only for a little while. They later reminisce about their childhood when Japan makes the same mistake. In the movie "Paint it White" they said "they have an undesirable relationship but indestructible and in their heart, they get along very well". Japan: England gets along well with Japan. Since they both discovered they did not have many friends and were somewhat lonely, they formed a friendship with one another. Although admitting he didn't know Japan very well at first, England admires his polite nature and mature behavior. England also enjoys the hot springs in Japan's home but is puzzled as to why Japan is not able to see the various mystical spirits of his country. He would also turn to Japan for help in decorating ceramics during the Industrial Revolution. Sealand: Sealand is England's youngest brother, an abandoned naval fort who declared himself a nation at the end of WWII. The two always bicker because Sealand wants to be recognized as a full-fledged nation and often sneaks into conferences the other countries attend (such as the G8, in which Sealand pretended to be Canada). England is often annoyed by many of Sealand's attempts to be recognized as a nation by himself or another country. Despite being called "Jerk England" and being promised that he will one day bow to him, England does look out for Sealand. Seychelles: In one of Seychelles' appearances in the manga, she is shown to be angry at England. Canada: While having gained the right to control Canada when he was still young, England's treatment and attention toward him are similar of that of other nations in which he sometimes confuses Canada for America or isn't able to see him at all. When Canada was young, England is known to have had an easier time raising him than his brother and their relationship appears to have mainly stayed the same over the years. he pretends to hate Francis. he does NOT. he just doesn’t want Francis to know he doesn’t hate him.
