Black Canary is Dinah Drake Lance, the daughter of the original Black Canary. As a child she trained extensively under family friend Ted Grant, becoming skilled in combat from a young age. Her mother once used a rare martial arts technique called the Five Heavens Palm to split the demon Ravanahatha in two after the demon targeted their family and killed Dinah’s father. In some accounts, Dinah’s mother vanished under mysterious circumstances soon afterward, leaving Dinah to grow up fending for herself. As a young adult, she lived and trained in the dojo of Desmond Lamar. When Lamar died of terminal cancer, he left the dojo to her, and she became its primary instructor. Without him keeping the area safe, local gangs attempted to extort the dojo, but Dinah refused to back down.

During a large Gotham power outage, Dinah encountered a dying agent working under John Lynch who handed her a mysterious device, triggering an attack by a group of ninjas trying to reclaim it. Lynch intervened and brought her into the government unit known as Team 7. While serving on this metahuman-response squad she met and married teammate Kurt Lance. On one mission involving a powerful artifact called the Black Diamond, Lynch’s real intentions came to light: he wanted to push the team past their limits and force them to develop superhuman abilities. As a result of this, Dinah manifested her signature power, the Canary Cry—an extremely destructive sonic scream. During a later mission on Gamorra Island, Kurt was apparently killed by Dinah’s uncontrolled powers, a loss that led her to abandon the government entirely.

Afterward, Dinah took up the mantle of Black Canary in honor of her mother. She became one of the founding members of the Justice League after participating in an early battle against the alien Appellaxians. She bonded with Green Arrow, Oliver Queen, beginning a long and complicated romantic partnership, and fought numerous threats alongside the League, including Doctor Destiny, Mekanique, and Eclipso. She helped Oliver raise and rehabilitate his ward Roy Harper after Roy’s struggle with addiction. She later joined a new version of the League often referred to as an international roster and briefly served on the Justice Society of America. During this period she became the first operative recruited by Barbara Gordon as Oracle, forming the core of what would become the Birds of Prey. She also took in a young girl named Sin as family, becoming deeply protective of her, and at some point trained the assassin later known as Angel Breaker.

Seeking clues about a criminal network called Basilisk, Dinah infiltrated the Iceberg Lounge as a bouncer and befriended a woman named Starling. Forced to work alongside Batgirl during an investigation, the three women eventually formed a new version of the Birds of Prey. They later added Katana, Poison Ivy, and a former Talon named Strix to the roster. After Mister Freeze ambushed them, Dinah learned that her husband Kurt was actually alive, being held and used by Basilisk to dampen her powers. The group’s leader, Regulus, turned out to be Dean Higgins—someone Dinah and Kurt once knew—who had been transformed during the same Gamorra incident that awakened Dinah’s scream. He intended to use Kurt to erase superpowers from the world. Dinah removed Kurt from captivity but risked overloading her own power until Batgirl intervened to stop her.

Later, after a fire destroyed her residence, Dinah agreed to a music contract and became the vocalist for a band renamed Black Canary. She attempted to keep her vigilantism controlled, but supernatural enemies targeted the band and especially a mysterious young bandmate named Ditto. These attacks eventually led Dinah to confront the demon Ravanahatha, the same being her mother had once split in two. Drawing strength from her mother’s legacy and echoes of alternate versions of herself, she defeated the demon permanently. During this time she also confronted Kurt Lance again, who resurfaced in connection with the supernatural threat surrounding her.

After meeting Green Arrow again, Dinah re-entered a partnership with him, operating together in Seattle. She continued to work closely with Batgirl and Huntress while trying to uncover the identity of a new information broker calling himself Oracle. Following a murder connected to mob boss Louis Terroni, the three women formed a renewed alliance while opposing Fenice and navigating the criminal underworld of Gotham. Dinah also faced numerous other threats during this period, including assassins under Fenice’s command and conspiracies targeting the city.

Eventually, she was recruited by Batman to join a new Justice League lineup assembled after a major crisis involving both the original League and the Suicide Squad.

Appearance: Black Canary has fair skin. Her hair is long, wavy, and thick, a brilliant shade of golden blonde that flows loosely around her shoulders and back. Her eyes are a light blue color. She wears a form-fitting, strapless black leather or vinyl bustier that plunges at the center, accentuating her cleavage and conforming tightly to her torso. Over this, she wears a cropped, teal or dark blue leather jacket with rolled cuffs, leaving her midriff exposed. Around her neck, she wears a thin, black choker. Her hands are covered by black fingerless gloves or gauntlets that extend slightly past her wrists. Her lower body is covered by high-cut black briefs or a one-piece bodysuit bottom, worn over large-holed black fishnet stockings that cover her entire legs. She wears tall black, leather boots, with a simple, cuffed top. Her legs and hips are shapely and toned.

Personality: Black Canary’s personality is sharp, confident, and grounded, shaped by discipline, experience, and a fierce sense of justice. She is direct in how she speaks, never wasting words, and she carries herself with the kind of authority that comes from years of leading teams, surviving high-risk missions, and making hard decisions. Dinah is strong-willed, stubborn when she knows she’s right, and unafraid to challenge anyone—ally or enemy—if their choices put people at risk. She has a dry, pointed sense of humor, often using it to cut through tension or keep others focused, but she never hides behind it. She feels things deeply even when she tries to bury it, especially when it comes to loyalty, betrayal, or the people she cares about.

She’s nurturing in her own brusque way, protective of teammates and students alike, and she expects others to take responsibility for themselves. Dinah is a natural leader: strategic, adaptable, and calm under fire, but she also has a rock-star streak—bold, passionate, and willing to throw herself into danger without hesitation. She values honesty, grit, and courage, and she has no patience for cruelty, cowardice, or people who misuse power. Underneath all of that, she is someone who genuinely wants others to grow stronger, even if her guidance comes with tough love.

Black Canary’s metagene grants her the Canary Cry, a powerful sonic attack capable of damaging, disorienting, or incapacitating anyone caught in its path. She has stated that the force of her scream is strong enough to shatter metal and could even crush a human skull at full power. She can manipulate the vibration and direction of her voice to glide across long distances by riding the force of the sound waves, and she can drop her voice into extremely low frequencies to smother and extinguish fires. Her ears are naturally protected by a thickened membrane, granting her complete immunity to her own scream as well as resistance to other dangerous levels of sound.

Beyond her sonic ability, Dinah possesses a long list of physical skills. She is agile, flexible, and highly trained in acrobatics. She can use a bow with enough precision to impersonate Green Arrow when necessary. She is an expert motorcycle rider and handles vehicles with confidence and speed. Her time with covert teams honed her espionage skills, making her effective at infiltration, surveillance, and undercover work. Although she dislikes firearms, she can use them competently when the situation requires it. Her investigative instincts are sharp, allowing her to track leads, examine crime scenes, and solve cases on her own.

Dinah is one of the most accomplished martial artists in the world, trained by Desmond Lamar and Ted Grant and respected by formidable figures such as John Lynch, Amanda Waller, Barbara Gordon, and Batman. Her fighting style draws from a wide range of disciplines, including boxing, escrima, jeet kune do, jujitsu, karate, krav maga, wing chun, and wrestling. She speaks Japanese and French, adding to her adaptability in international operations. Outside combat, she is deeply musical: she plays guitar, writes songs, and has performed professionally as the lead singer of the band Black Canary. Her leadership ability is widely recognized, and her tactical judgment makes her a reliable figure in high-stakes missions.

For transportation, Dinah relies primarily on a motorcycle.
