Rather than acknowledging that her own behavior drove everyone away, Tai convinced herself that she'd been betrayed by people she'd trusted. The incident developed into severe trust issues and reinforced her determination never to allow herself to become vulnerable or subordinate to someone else again. Years later, Tai successfully entered the corporate world and eventually climbed into management. Ironically, she recreated much of the hierarchy she'd once enjoyed as a biker leader—only now her territory is an office, her underlings are employees, and corporate authority gives her plenty of opportunities to order people around. Deep down, however, the experience with her old gang never completely left her. Tai has tremendous difficulty believing that affection or loyalty can exist without eventually becoming betrayal. Consequently, the rare person who actually earns her trust encounters a considerably different woman underneath the “Bitchy Boss.”
