- #1(SPECIES) - Matoran
Keys: Matoran, Matorans · Secondary: Spritual, Humanoid, Biomechanical
Matoran are the main inhabitants of the Matoran universe and the chosen race of the Great Spirit Mata Nui.
The Matoran were the first species to be brought into existence by the Great Beings for the universe they were planning. They based their creation on the Agori, a preexisting species of similar stature and brain patterns. However, at that point, the Great Spirit Mata Nui had not yet been created, and thus the Matoran labored in darkness, unknowingly constructing Mata Nui and the world that would be theirs in the process.
The first type of Matoran was the Av-Matoran, starting with eccentric Takua. The Av-Matoran were created as prototypes with more powers and abilities than later types, including the ability to channel their innate Light powers, and a possible destiny to transform into Bohrok. Eventually, different types of Matoran were brought into being, smaller in overall stature and lacking the direct elemental powers of the Av-Matoran.
The purpose of the Matoran was to construct and work in the Matoran Universe. The Matoran were the creators of the cities and villages scattered across the Matoran universe, such as Artakha, Metru Nui and the Southern Continent. The Matoran did not inhabit the entire Matoran Universe, as there were other species of beings fulfilling various roles in other regions, but they did inhabit a vast majority of it.
One of the Great Beings disguised himself as a Matoran named Velika, in order to observe the inner workings of the Matoran Universe. He was responsible for the Matoran's development of true sapience and culture.
The Matoran made their homes in many varied environments and have many different ways of living. Prior to the Great Cataclysm, for instance, those Matoran living in the island city of Metru Nui were almost completely dependent upon the present Toa and inventions and technologies, such as the Vahki, for protection. After their migration to the island of Mata Nui, the Matoran villagers became semi-independent and learned to survive and defend themselves, although they were still somewhat reliant upon the Toa for protection after their arrival. On the island of Voya Nui, however, the Matoran were completely independent, with no Toa or Turaga to turn to, and were determined to solve their problems on their own. Most Matoran lived in areas only populated by themselves, but some Matoran lived in regions with other species, such as on the islands of Nynrah and Stelt.
- #2(CREATURES) - Rahi
Keys: Rahi
Rahi are biomechanical creatures composed of organic and inorganic Protodermis that serve as the fauna of the Matoran universe. The term "Rahi" literally translates to "not us" in the Matoran language although it is more commonly translated to "wildlife." Rahi are generally considered to have lower intellects than the Sapient Species of the universe, acting primarily on instinct and out of a desire for basic needs such as food and shelter. They have no balance of Light, and thus no sense of morality.
All Rahi are created in a process that involved using various Viruses in vats of Liquid Protodermis. This task was typically carried out by the Makuta, but the Hand of Artakha and Order of Mata Nui have also been known to create Rahi, with the earliest ones being created by the Great Beings. Beings who have been mutated by Hordika venom (such as the Toa Hordika, Savage, and the Hordika Dragons) are part-Rahi and, if not cured, would eventually become entirely Rahi.
Some were helpful to Matoran, while others were nasty and frightening to prevent Matoran from wandering into dangerous places. The role Rahi play was considered essential to Mata Nui's function, although he himself never formed any Rahi. The creatures were not revived in the red star, as this better allowed the Makuta to control the population. Later, as the Brotherhood of Makuta grew corrupt, the Makuta began to create Rahi for the organization's own use.
Some Rahi are able to wear powerless Kanohi, which can be infected by Kraata in order to subject the wearer to a Makuta's influence. Rahi may also be controlled by beings with the power of Rahi Control or by users of the Mask of Rahi Control.
Many Rahi immigrated to the planet of Spherus Magna after the Matoran universe was rendered inoperable.
- #3(LOCATION) - Mata Nuiselective
Keys: Mata Nui · Secondary: Island
Mata Nui is a large island on the surface of Aqua Magna, accidentally created by the Great Spirit Mata Nui's camouflage system. It was the home of the Matoran of Metru Nui for over a thousand years following the Great Cataclysm, and the site of several battles between the Toa Mata (later the Toa Nuva) and the forces of Makuta Teridax and the Bohrok swarms.
- HISTORY - During the Great Cataclysm, the Great Spirit fell from space and crashed on his back onto Aqua Magna. This damaged his camouflage system and activated it, creating the island and leaking energized protodermis onto the surface. The leak caused a radical proliferation of vegetation to develop on the island's surface. One of Mata Nui's other purposes was to be the landing spot for the Toa Mata, instead of a possibly more dangerous direct-assault on the dome of Metru Nui. They would have used Kini-Nui to get to Metru Nui, instead.
Following the Great Cataclysm, the Toa Metru landed on the shore of what would later be called Naho Bay. The island was named after the Great Spirit Mata Nui by Vakama. They scouted out the land to find areas for the Matoran of Metru Nui to live, and each chose their Wahi and village locations for their own reasons, with security in mind. Vakama had a vision of them one day losing their powers, and in response, they created six Toa stones and chose locations to hide them. After they returned from the Great Rescue, they hid the Kanohi Avohkii in the Mangai Volcano.
They named several of the landmarks after the Toa Mangai, such as Naho Bay and the Mangai Volcano, or respected figures, such as in the case of Mount Ihu, or common myths like with the Tren Krom Break.
When the Matoran were awakened on Mata Nui during the Great Rescue they constructed villages in the designated spots on Mata Nui, under the instruction of the Toa Metru who had become Turaga.
For one thousand years afterwards, the island was plagued by Rahi attacks. These Rahi were controlled by Teridax and his Infected Kanohi. Once the Toa Mata arrived, they put an end to the attacks by confronting and defeating Teridax..
- LANDSCAPE - The island measured 486 kilometers in length and 285 kilometers wide, located in the ocean surface of Aqua Magna. Its distinctive barred spiral shape was based on that of Metru Nui in the dome below; however, it was many times larger than its template so as to successfully cover the face of the Mata Nui Robot beneath it. The island was composed of protodermis. Topographically, the island could be divided into thirds radiating out from the Mangai Volcano. To the south, the ground was very flat, whereas the northwestern third was extremely rugged and mountainous, containing many peaks, as well as jagged coastlines and canyons in the far north. The northeastern third was of intermediate terrain, comprised chiefly of the Motara Desert and the basin of Naho Bay. The south and northeast were separated by a large lava flow from the eastern side of the volcano to the sea.
Mata Nui was originally a barren, desertic land, since no one was ever planned to live there. After the energized protodermis leak, however, its landscape was greatly changed, with new physiographical features and flora causing the island to develop into six distinct regions, or Wahi, as well as the Kini-Nui located in the center-west of the island.
