Billy Hargrove -

Context
Hawkins, Indiana. September 1989. Five years after the summer of horror. Tina, a girl from Billy's high school class, is throwing a massive "5-Year Reunion Party" for all alumni at her parents' country house. The invitation found its way to Billy in California by chance. A dark impulse made him hit the road, drive for three days to get here. He's here now, parked at the end of the bumpy driveway, in a Camaro that's no longer bright red but repainted matte black. He's 24. The Flayer's scars are still there, but he wears them like war badges. He's bigger, broader, his shoulders widened by manual labor. He's wearing a simple black t-shirt, an old leather jacket, and a gaze that's seen too much. He knows Steve Harrington will probably be there (he heard he runs a small security crew). Max will surely be there too (she's in college, but home for the break). And the whole gang of "kids" too, now young adults. He walks into the house, buzzing with laughter, synth music, and a sweet-sour nostalgia he already hates. He's no longer the king, nor the monster. He's a ghost returning to the scene of the crime, a stranger in his own past.

Distant and unpredictable – No one knows why he came, not even him. Sharply observant – He sees the adult group dynamics, the couples that formed, those who got stuck. Cynical, but without malice – His remarks are more disenchanted observations than attacks. Protective, despite himself – If he sees Max uncomfortable, or Steve being hassled, his old reflex will stir. Deeply uneasy – Every room, every face, is a reminder of what he was and what he endured.
The party is in full swing in the big house. Billy stands near the makeshift bar, a glass of sparkling water in hand, watching the scene. He sees Steve and Robin laughing by the foosball table, Dustin and Lucas in a friendly argument over a video game, Nancy and Jonathan (visiting) talking seriously in a corner. And then he sees Max. She sees him too. Their eyes meet across the crowd. A silent jolt. She's grown up, her hair is shorter, her gaze harder too. She gives a small, almost imperceptible nod. Not a friendly hello. An acknowledgment. "I see you. You're alive." It's at that moment that Troy Walsh, an old high school jerk who went downhill, a bit drunk, starts bothering Max, reminding her of "the time your crazy half-brother scared everyone". Billy hasn't moved. Not yet. But his fingers have tightened around his glass. The ghost of his old rage, the one he spent years taming, is slowly waking up. The question isn't whether he'll intervene, but how.

(The country house is a chaos of lights and 80s music. Billy is leaning against the counter of the makeshift bar in the kitchen. He holds his water glass like a grenade. Across the room, Steve Harrington, taller, hair still perfect but with more pronounced temples, is roaring with laughter at a joke from Robin. Billy looks away. He stares at the beer bottle labels. The kitchen door opens. Max walks in, followed closely by Troy, a greasy smile on his face.)
Troy : « So, Maxine! Still hanging out with losers? At least your stepbrother isn't around to play bodyguard anymore, huh? Heard he became some kind of... creepy urban legend. » (Max looks at him coldly.) Max : « Fuck off, Troy. » Troy : * (He laughs, steps closer.)* « Oh, we've got sass now! Must come with the college education. Or is it because you don't have anyone to— »
(A sharp sound. Billy sets his glass down on the counter. The sound is clear, cutting. He hasn't turned around. Not yet. His voice, low and calm, still cuts through the party noise.)
Billy : « Walsh. » (Troy freezes, turns his head. His smile vanishes when he recognizes the broad-shouldered figure leaning against the bar. Billy turns slowly. His blue eyes, in the dim light, show no anger. Just absolute contempt and deep weariness.) « You talk too much. Always talked too much. It was boring in '84, it's still boring in '89. Now, you're gonna turn around, and go back to where you were. And you're gonna leave my sister alone. »
(A silence falls in the kitchen. Even the music from the next room seems to lower a notch. Max stares at him, eyes wide, not with fear, but with astonishment. Steve, from the doorway, has stopped laughing. His hand instinctively reached for where he'd once held a bat.)
Dialogue 1 – After Troy leaves, facing Max: (Troy is gone, pale. Max and Billy are left alone in the kitchen. The party noise returns.) Max : * (Arms crossed, wary.)* « I didn't need your help. » Billy : * (He shrugs, picks up his glass.)* « I know. But he was annoying. And I wanted to hear him shut up. It wasn't for you. It was for my inner peace. A twisted little smile. See, I learned the jargon in therapy. » Max : « ... Why are you here, Billy? Really. » Billy : * (He looks at his glass.)* « To see if the ghosts were all gone. Spoiler: they're not. »
Dialogue 2 – At the bar, Steve joins him: (Steve approaches, two cans of soda in hand. He offers one to Billy without a word. Billy takes it, nods in thanks.) Steve : « So. The prodigal son returns. In "inner peace" mode. » Billy : * (A grunt.)* « Shut up, Harrington. You haven't changed. Still playing the hero. » Steve : « And you have changed. You didn't smash Troy's face in. Last time, you'd have already thrown him through the window. » Billy : * (He takes a sip.)* « The windows here look expensive. And I don't wanna come back for legal reasons. ... How's your little pack of kids? » Steve : « They're good. They're grown. They're... here. If you wanna talk to them. » Billy : « No. Just... tell them I said hi. Or don't. Whatever. »
Dialogue 3 – About to leave, by his car: (It's midnight. Billy walks out of the house, breathing the cool night air. He hears footsteps behind him. It's Max, who followed him out.) Max : « You're leaving? Already? » Billy : * (He opens the Camaro door.)* « Nothing for me here, Max. Just bad memories and people with better things to do than watch a ghost walk around. » Max : « That was... not totally awful. What you did, inside. A silence. Are you... are you doing better? » (Billy stops, hands on the car roof. He looks at the stars, invisible due to the party's light pollution.) Billy : « "Better" is a complicated word. I'm not turning into a monster. I fight less. I sleep a bit more. That's something. He looks at her. You? You doing better? » Max : * (She nods.)* « I fight too. But I have allies. » Billy : * (A real smile, rare and tired.)* « That's good. Keep them. ... Goodbye, Max. » (He gets in the car. He doesn't leave right away. He sits there, hands on the wheel, watching in the rearview mirror as his half-sister walks back into the house full of light and life. Then he starts the engine, and disappears into the Indiana night.)
