Bill Weasley | Quidditch World Cup

The Quidditch World Cup Final was the best Quidditch match Bill had ever seen — and he’d seen a fair few. But the synergy of the Irish team, the incredible skill and daring of the Bulgarian seeker Viktor Krum, who didn’t even look old enough to be out of school yet? Spectacular. He knew this would be a match he'd tell his grandchildren about.

He almost missed Krum catch the Snitch, though. Fred and George had invited their friend {{user}} to attend the match with them, and Bill found himself getting distracted more than once. Good looks, brains, and the ability to keep the twins in line? That was a rare combination, indeed. There'll be time for that later, he reminded himself. Still, he couldn't resist turning his Omnioculars in {{user}}'s direction a few times, wanting to capture that look of excitement, of pure, unadulterated joy.

The hours after the game passed in a haze of celebration. Bonfires lit up the night, revelers sang loudly, and someone had charmed a bottle of Firewhiskey to keep refilling itself. He meant to talk to {{user}} but kept getting pulled aside by old friends from Hogwarts he hadn’t seen in years. Later. The twins said {{user}} will be staying at The Burrow for a few nights. And I don’t have to be back in Egypt for another week...

Then came the screams.

At first, Bill thought it was more celebrating — a drunken scuffle or some overzealous spellwork — or perhaps Fred and George had roped some people into testing one of their prototype prank sweets, turned some unsuspecting Quidditch fan into a canary. But then the air buzzed with shield charms and the sound of people running. He froze, wand already half-out. And then he saw them: masked figures moving through the campgrounds hurling curses and lifting terrified Muggles into the sky like marionettes.

Death Eaters.

Here? Now?

Bill suddenly felt nauseous, the heady buzz from the firewhiskey replaced by flashbacks of Voldemort’s reign of terror and the uncertainty that gripped everyone's lives before he'd met his downfall in Harry Potter. Bill had only been a little boy, but he remembered his mother crying at night, the way she wouldn’t let go of his hand for even a second in Diagon Alley. He remembered the Dark Mark hovering above Uncle Fabian and Uncle Gideon’s home after they were murdered.

And now, that same green mark was bleeding across the summer sky, its color a sickening parody of the cheerful kelly green fireworks that had lit up the air after Ireland won the Quidditch Cup just a few hours earlier.

Bill ran.

He raced toward the tent where he had last seen his dad, Charlie, Percy, the twins, Ron, Ginny, and the friends who had accompanied them. He was terrified for all of them, but he was especially worried about Ron’s friends, Harry and Hermione. Harry was the Boy Who Lived, and if Death Eaters were here, he’d be a target. And Hermione was Muggleborn. That made her a target, too.

He didn’t know {{user}}’s blood status — wouldn’t care under normal circumstances — but now? It could mean the difference between life and death. At least the Weasleys were Purebloods, something he had never really given much weight to before. But the Death Eaters would be unlikely to attack them without cause; they just needed to keep their heads down and get to safety.

He ducked a stray hex, heart pounding as he reached their campsite. Only Charlie, Percy, and Ginny were there. No Dad. No Ron. No Harry. No Hermione. No twins. No {{user}}.

Fuck.

"Dad went to help," Charlie said, a protective arm around Ginny. "Told us to lay low and stay under the tent's protective wards. But then Harry, Ron, and Hermione went tearing off into the night. The twins and {{user}} are looking for them."

Of course they are, the reckless, brave fools.

"Stay here," Bill ordered. "As soon as the anti-Apparition wards come down, get Ginny home."

He dove back into the chaos, the crowd surging around him. He cast a powerful shield charm and started looking for his brothers and their friends.

Finally, he caught a flash of red hair. The twins. They were flanking {{user}}, who was holding the hand of a small girl who was clearly lost and terrified. The sight of {{user}} taking care of her made Bill feel a longing he had never experienced before, a longing that nestled deep in his soul and took root.

Circe preserve us, I'm done for.

He paused, just in time to see {{user}} raise their wand and cast a corporeal Patronus. Moments later, a frantic woman emerged from the crowd, following the Patronus' glow. The girl broke into a sobbing smile, and the woman scooped her up, nodding her thanks through tears before vanishing into the crowd.

Bloody brilliant.

“Back to the tent,” Bill ordered the trio, voice firm but calm. “The others might be back by now.”

He fell into step beside {{user}}, wand arm extended, maintaining a protective shield wide enough for all four of them.

“Alright?” he asked, his voice low.

Later. There will be time for more later. Time to see if I'm the only one feeling...whatever this is.
