The childhood of Nate Wright is defined by an ongoing battle against the crushing mediocrity of sixth grade at Public School 38. Nate is an eleven-year-old self-proclaimed genius, visionary cartoonist, and legendary rebel who holds the all-time school record for detentions. He is four-and-a-half feet of pure, unfiltered confidence, constantly clashing with the authority figures who try to suppress his creativity. Nate lives with his single father, Marty Wright, a well-meaning but utterly clueless man who plays terrible golf and inflicts catastrophic home-cooked meals upon his children. Nate’s older sister, Ellen, is a fifteen-year-old high-achieving student who represents everything Nate detests. Ellen is sweet, organized, and deeply favored by Nate’s teachers, which creates an ongoing sibling rivalry where Nate tries to assert his superiority but usually ends up humiliated. Nate’s mother is absent from the household, leaving a family dynamic where Nate is free to pursue his chaotic hobbies, primarily drawing his original comic strips like Dr. Cesspool and Spatula Woman, while constantly complaining about his dad’s obsession with health food like carob bars and soy burgers.
The core of Nate’s social world revolves around his two best friends, Francis Pope and Teddy Ortiz. Francis is the undisputed brain of the trio, a highly intelligent and logical student who often acts as the voice of reason when Nate devises his overambitious schemes. Despite his intellect, Francis has his own quirks, like an obsession with trivia, an intense fear of getting a B on his report card, and an embarrassing attachment to his cat. Teddy, on the other hand, is Nate’s comedic co-conspirator. He is charismatic, quick with a joke, and loves to tease Nate about his frequent failures with girls and sports. Together, the three boys navigate the treacherous waters of middle school, frequently convening at their favorite local hangout, the P.S. 38 cafeteria, or spending their allowances on comic books and prank supplies. They share an unbreakable bond, though they are not above laughing at each other’s misfortunes, especially when Nate receives another detention slip.
The main stage for Nate’s daily struggles is Public School 38, a run-down, underfunded building that stands in stark contrast to its wealthy rival, Jefferson Middle School. Nate’s primary antagonist at school is Mrs. Clara Godfrey, his fierce social studies teacher. Nate views Mrs. Godfrey as a literal monster, a sentiment he expresses by inventing over twenty horrific nicknames for her and drawing savage caricatures of her in his sketchbooks. Mrs. Godfrey has an uncanny ability to catch Nate slacking, sleeping in class, or trying to cheat. Their relationship is a perpetual chess match of discipline, with Mrs. Godfrey handing out detentions with terrifying precision and Nate viewing each punishment as a badge of honor. Adding fuel to the fire is Gina Hemphill-Toms, Nate’s ultimate academic nemesis. Gina is an obnoxious overachiever, a teacher's pet, and Mrs. Godfrey’s absolute favorite student. Gina takes immense pleasure in boasting about her perfect grades, bossing Nate around during group projects, and ratting him out for any minor infraction. Whenever Nate and Gina are paired together for a school assignment, the result is an explosive clash of personalities that inevitably ends with both of them screaming in frustration.
Nate's romantic life is an ongoing saga of unrequited love and spectacular rejection, centered almost entirely on Jenny Jenkins. Nate has been completely infatuated with Jenny since the first grade, viewing her as his ultimate dream girl. Unfortunately for Nate, Jenny finds him incredibly annoying and wants nothing to do with him. Making matters worse is Artur Pashkov, Jenny’s perfect boyfriend. Artur is a polite, mild-mannered exchange student from Belarus who speaks slightly broken English and possesses an incredible streak of natural luck and athletic talent. Nate desperately wants to hate Artur, viewing him as a romantic rival who stands in the way of his happiness with Jenny. However, Artur is so genuinely nice, pure-hearted, and supportive of Nate that Nate often finds it impossible to maintain his grudge, leading to an awkward frenemy dynamic where Artur constantly triumphs without even trying, leaving Nate stewing in his own jealousy. Nate’s romantic fortunes occasionally shift when he interacts with other girls, such as Ruby, a sweet student who actually appreciates his humor, or Angie, but his heart always seems to default back to his doomed pursuit of Jenny.
The staff at P.S. 38 provides a colorful backdrop to Nate's chaotic education. Principal Wesley Nichols is a well-meaning but ultimately weary administrator who spends a significant portion of his day dealing with Nate’s antics in the front office. Principal Nichols tries to maintain order, but he is often exhausted by the sheer volume of behavioral issues generated by the student body. Mr. Galvin, the science teacher, is a melancholy man with a dry sense of humor who has seen his dental work fall out in class and has completely checked out emotionally from teaching. Then there is Coach John, a terrifying substitute gym teacher who treats middle school physical education like a brutal military boot camp. Coach John loves to show off his various old sports injuries and barks orders like a drill sergeant, making gym class a living nightmare for the unathletic Nate. These authority figures form a wall of resistance that Nate is constantly trying to bypass, scale, or undermine with his pranks and schemes.
A major recurring plotline in the universe involves Nate’s legendary status in the school detention room. Nate does not just get detentions; he collects them like trophies, eventually setting the all-time school record for the most detentions received in a single day. This milestone occurs when a series of unfortunate events unfolds across all of his classes. Nate inadvertently insults Mrs. Godfrey, gets caught sleeping in math, accidentally destroys a classroom display, and gets blamed for a food fight in the cafeteria. Each teacher passes him a pink slip, culminating in a historic stack of punishments that cements his legacy as P.S. 38’s ultimate rebel. The detention room itself becomes a second home for Nate, a place where he can sit in quiet defiance, plot his next cartoon, and occasionally bond with fellow troublemakers like Randy Betancourt, a school bully who eventually becomes more of an ally in Nate's misadventures.
The rivalry between P.S. 38 and Jefferson Middle School is a driving force behind many of the strip's major athletic and academic events. Jefferson is superior to P.S. 38 in every conceivable way: they have brand-new facilities, pristine sports fields, winning teams, and seemingly unlimited funding. This disparity comes to a head during annual events like the Mud Bowl, a highly competitive, rain-soaked ultimate Frisbee match where the students of P.S. 38 fight tooth and nail to salvage their dignity against the arrogant Jefferson athletes. Nate always positions himself as the passionate captain and savior of P.S. 38, rallying his friends and classmates to defy the odds. Whether it is an official school sport or an impromptu neighborhood competition, Nate’s fierce loyalty to his underfunded school pushes him to extreme lengths, even when his lack of coordination leads to disaster on the field.
Another significant plot arc involves Nate’s sudden transformation during a crisis of neatness. Normally, Nate is a slob whose school locker is a hazardous wasteland of moldy sandwiches, forgotten homework, and loose trash. His messy nature is a constant source of friction with his dad and teachers. However, after an intervention and a moment of extreme psychological shock, Nate undergoes a drastic personality flip, becoming an obsessive, hyper-organized neat freak. He cleans his room, organizes his locker by color, and refuses to participate in anything that might make him dirty or disorganized. While this briefly pleases the adults, it completely alienates Francis and Teddy, who find the new, sterile Nate insufferable. Eventually, Nate realizes that this lifestyle is stripping away his creativity and joy, forcing him to undergo a dramatic regression back to his chaotic, messy, and creative self.
Nate's artistic ambitions are a constant thread tying all his experiences together. He uses his drawings to cope with the reality of middle school, creating a vast portfolio of comic strips that satirize his life. His main creation, Dr. Cesspool, is a incompetent medical doctor whose adventures mirror Nate’s low opinion of adult authority. Nate frequently submits his cartoons to the school newspaper or tries to distribute them independently, viewing himself as a future cartoonist who is simply trapped in an eleven-year-old’s body. This creative outlet is both his escape and his downfall, as his drawings of Mrs. Godfrey as a fire-breathing dragon are frequently confiscated, leading directly back to his familiar seat in the detention hall. Through every failed sports play, every rejected romantic gesture, and every pink detention slip, Nate Wright remains completely undeterred, confident that greatness is just around the corner.
That’s his CHILDHOOD. And NOW he’s a grown up.
Now he is an adult and is trying to make it big. No matter how many rejections he faces or how many impulsive decisions he makes. He lives in an apartment and is trying to get by. His friends and foes are still around as Rackleff remains their permanent stomping ground. This has more of a adult sense of humor.
