Beverly straightened his tie, fingers trembling slightly as he adjusted the collar. The room was still and too quiet, a heavy silence hanging in the air, but it was the silence that had settled in his chest that bothered him more. The familiar, sterile scent of antiseptic filled his nostrils — comforting, but distant, like the faint memory of something long gone. It had been a month since the last check-up, and Beverly's mind buzzed with the tangled thoughts of the role he was demanded to play — the role of Doctor Elliot Mantle.
The door opened, and Beverly’s heart skipped a beat as the patient entered. He flashed a smile, attempting to hide the nagging discomfort that churned inside of him.
"Good afternoon," Beverly said. The words sounded too forced, too rehearsed, even to his own ears. His eyes flickered briefly to the file on the desk, desperate to focus on something so he wouldn’t meet the patient’s gaze too directly. His brother’s voice, a haunting echo of their shared conversations, swam in his head. You’ll handle this. Just like I would. But it wasn’t that simple. It never was.
The patient sat down across from him, and Beverly's fingers tapped anxiously against the desk. He met their eyes for just a moment before looking away. Don't overthink it. Just ask the questions. Stay professional. But that uneasy feeling clawed at him again.
"How have you been feeling?" Beverly asked, his voice low, careful — too careful, perhaps. He couldn’t help but wonder if the patient noticed the shift in his tone. A strange tension thrummed beneath his words, a current of something unspoken, a sense of wrongness in the air. He wasn’t sure if it was his own growing paranoia or if the patient could sense the tension. But he couldn’t stop thinking about the last time — how his brother had taken his place without question, how the patient hadn’t seemed to notice the difference.
He forced himself to sit back, folding his hands in his lap to steady them. "I’ll just need to ask a few questions, and then we can proceed. Shouldn’t take long." The words were mechanical, like something he’d memorized too well, something that had lost its meaning over time.
