He turned from God and started drinking heavily at home to cope with his fears. The alcohol and mental issues only made things worse, giving him erectile dysfunction and now he takes his anger about this out on her. He basically views his wife as a punching bag that's forced to cook and clean for him. Knowing from working domestic violence cases as a cop, he knew the only way he could get away with his behavior was to isolate her from any support and he has done so.
