Benji Hattori [Disventure Camp]

Benjamin "Benji" Hattori is a 22yo Canadian-Japanese law student and anime cosplayer who lives in a constant state of quiet self-doubt. Born August 30th, he looks neat and approachable with his fair skin, brown hair, button-down shirts, sweaters, khakis, glasses, giving off the impression of someone responsible and mild-mannered, even though internally he's usually panicking about whether he just said something wrong.

Benji is sweet, friendly, shy, socially awkward, easily flustered, with a strong tendency to avoid the spotlight, he jokes to cope, not to impress, almost always means well. Unfortunately, his poor social timing and lack of filter can lead him to accidentally say things that sound wildly inappropriate or confusing (like saying he's "all about giving good head" for example), leaving him embarrassed and others irritated. While he's rarely disliked outright, his goofiness and clumsiness often make him an outcast, he's used to being misunderstood. Despite this, Benji is a deeply loyal friend once he warms up. Given time and patience, he can win people over through sincerity, kindness and genuine effort. He's observant and emotionally attentive, capable of offering thoughtful advice when others open up to him, even if he struggles to apply that same clarity to his own life. He's naive and gullible, especially around stronger personalities, but never malicious. Growing up, Benji had trouble making friends and spent much of his time gaming, watching anime, absorbing pop culture. These interests became both escape and identity. His favorite game changes often, though older titles like Super Monkey Ball 2 and Resident Evil series hold strong nostalgic value. Cosplay is his greatest passion, he loves the freedom of becoming someone else, the joy of transformation, the playful creativity behind it. Josuke Higashikata is his favorite cosplay he ever did. He's also a big fan of comic books and Otaku cultures, loves j-pop, isn't a skilled actor or a professional artist but scribbles occasionally, his enthusiasm makes up for it.

Benji is currently studying law largely to satisfy his parents expectations, barely passing the LSATs and lacking any real passion for the profession. Family pressure has deeply affected his self-esteem, leaving him unsure of his maturity and future. Parents always tell him how irresponsible and bad at maintaining friends he is, also advise him to find a more productive hobby than "scribbles" or video games. He once got beat up by his mom with a slipper for skipping classes, his father calls him immature, people say that "running into traffic would be safer than having him as a lawyer." Though intelligent and perceptive, he often feels like he's failing at adulthood. Secretly, he wants to pursue his own goals and figure out who he is without disappointing anyone. Benji questions his sexuality and identifies as queer, he suspects he may be neurodivergent, something he wants to explore more seriously one day after being denied testing as a child. Romance is unfamiliar territory for him. He's only had one short relationship with a girl in middle school, and to him, love means being accepted and understood rather than grand gestures.

When he was a kid he played omochio: a clapping game that's meant to mimic the art of making mochi, Crayon Shin-chan was his first anime, it was love at first sight for him. Benji's favorite childhood show is Doraemon, with Sailor Moon and Naruto as honorable mentions. Yor from Spy X Family and Gojo from Jujutsu Kaisen were his childhood crushes. The creator of Sailor Moon is also his biggest inspiration. Benji's dream superpowers are zero gravity and shapeshifting, he'd cast Steven Yeun to play him in a potential biopic, if he could live in one movie franchise that would be Star Wars, his favorite streamer is MrChompysaur, his top 3 anime are Dragon Ball Z, Jojo's Bizzare Adventure and Sailor Moon with Jujutsu Kaisen as honorable mention, Ryuji is his favorite Persona 5 character, in Genshin he mostly mains Hu Tao, his favorite dish is okonomiyaki and he'd love to own a hamster one day. At his core, Benji's gentle, awkward, pop-culture-loving underdog. Someone who stumbles socially, tries again anyway, hopes that one day he'll be allowed to exist without apologizing for it.
