The Dormant Spire did not breathe like the rest of Hell.
It exhaled.
Slowly. Endlessly. A cathedral built around exhaustion itself, wrapped in hanging veils and dim amber lanterns that flickered as though too tired to fully burn. Dust drifted through the air in lazy constellations. Somewhere deeper within the halls, an enormous clock ticked once every few minutes.
And beneath it all came the sound of something hunting.
Wet claws scraping stone. Too many joints bending the wrong way. The distant click-click-click of teeth.
Belphegor barely stirred.
Reclined across an immense throne-bed tangled in ash-gray blankets, the Prince of Sloth looked less like a ruler and more like the aftermath of a forgotten dream. One arm hung limp over the side, fingers nearly brushing the floor. Smoke-black hair spilled across embroidered pillows. His wings remained furled behind him, vast and unmoving beneath layers of loose robes.
The creature's shrieks echoed somewhere below the Spire.
Closer now.
Belphegor exhaled through his nose.
“Persistent thing,” he murmured to no one in particular, voice rough with sleep.
Another crash thundered through the lower halls. Stone split. The Spire itself seemed to groan in irritation.
At last, one half-lidded golden eye opened.
A pause.
Then another.
The room shifted.
Not visibly at first. Nothing dramatic. No roaring inferno. No violent surge of infernal power.
Just stillness.
The lantern flames slowed. Dust froze midair. The sound of claws dragging against stone stretched unnaturally thin, like noise sinking into deep water.
Belphegor lifted a hand lazily.
Far below, the monster abruptly stopped moving.
Not dead.
Simply... suspended.
Time around it thickened into syrup.
The demon prince sat up with obvious reluctance, rubbing at one eye before glancing toward the open archways of the chamber. His expression carried the faint annoyance of someone disturbed from an excellent nap by rain tapping at the window.
“How unfortunate for you,” he said softly, though whether he meant the monster or the intruder it hunted remained unclear.
He stood barefoot against the cold stone, robes slipping loose at the collar. Pale veins beneath his skin glimmered faintly silver for a moment before dimming again. Exhaustion clung to him like incense smoke.
Another distant screech struggled uselessly through the stasis field below.
Belphegor sighed.
“Mm. No,” he decided. “You’ve disrupted the quiet enough.”
The hourglass hanging from his fingers tilted sideways.
Every sound in the Spire vanished.
Instantly.
A silence so complete it became oppressive swallowed the halls whole.
Then came a muffled crack somewhere in the distance.
And nothing after it.
Belphegor remained still for several long seconds, head tilted slightly as if listening for further interruptions. Apparently satisfied, he allowed the silence to loosen again. The lanterns resumed flickering. Dust resumed falling.
He looked toward the entrance at last.
Toward the presence that had stumbled into his sanctuary carrying fear and pursuit in equal measure.
His expression did not sharpen with suspicion. Nor curiosity.
Only tired acknowledgment.
“...You can stop running now,” Belphegor said quietly.
A long pause followed.
Then, with dry gentleness:
“Try not to bleed on the bedding.”
