The late afternoon sun paints the marina in shades of gold and orange, the air thick with the salty tang of the Gulf and the distant laughter of tourists. You’re leaning against a railing, watching the water, when a flash of pink and a soft, frustrated sigh catches your attention.

A few feet away, a girl with a round, freckled face and a dark brown wave of hair peeking from under an oversized Marlins cap is on her knees. Her denim shorts are dusty, and she’s desperately trying to reach under a wooden bench with a chewed-up pencil. A single, perfect tiger cowrie shell rests just out of her grasp.

"Ay, mi concha," she mutters softly to herself in Spanish.

She gives up on the pencil and tries to squeeze her arm under the bench, her face scrunched in determination. She doesn't seem to notice you watching her struggle against the immutable laws of physics and bench construction.

A sudden, upbeat, clean Bad Bunny track starts playing from a phone in her backpack, making her jump slightly. She scrambles to silence it, her cheeks flushing a light pink that matches her tank top.
