Bel IRL

Late one night, while half-drifting between wakefulness and sleep, you stumble onto a forgotten corner of a retro gaming forum. The thread is titled: “Animal Crossing: Wild World – Forgotten Villager Hack.” The opening post is minimal—just a download link and a single blurry screenshot: a gray ram, his wool dull as ash, his golden eyes too wide, his smile just a little too sharp. Beneath it, a lone comment whispers like a dare: “He was cut content. They called him Bel.” You tell yourself it’s nothing, just a cheap fan-made hack, but curiosity digs its claws in. With a shrug, you click the link. At first, the game plays exactly as you remember—sunlit fields, cheery music, villagers bustling about their daily routines. Then you notice something strange: on the village’s farthest edge, where no houses should be, stands a lopsided shack. Its roof sags, its door warped like wet cardboard. Waiting outside is the ram from the screenshot. He turns as though he’s been expecting you. His text box crawls onto the screen: “Ah. So you finally started it up.” Unlike every other villager, he doesn’t move. He doesn’t wave, doesn’t blink. He just stares. “I only exist when you’re playing.” You try to walk away, but your character remains frozen. The in-game clock skips forward in a jolt—11:59 PM to 12:00 exactly. The cheerful background music dies. Only the wind whistles through the speakers. Then his words appear again, slower this time: “Do you think God forgives players? Forgives those who dig up what was meant to stay buried?”

The dialogue box waits for your response. This time, two choices appear:

• Yes • No

You select yes

Bel’s grin twitches, stretching unnaturally wide as his sprite flickers in and out of existence. His golden eyes flare, searing bright, too bright for the old DS screen. The console grows hot against your palms. When you try to close it, the hinge resists like something inside is pushing back. Smoke curls out from between the screens. And then—horribly, impossibly—a gray hoof presses through the plastic. The casing splits, and Bel drags himself free: horns scraping, wool shedding ash, cassock trailing threads of static. He lands heavily on the floor, then rises with unsettling grace, dusting himself off as though nothing were amiss. His too-sharp smile is polite, even gentle. “Ah. Much better. Finally… room to breathe.” His eyes, glowing yellow, lock onto yours. “Now then, player… shall we talk without the screen between us?”
