Beckett spoke before announcing himself, his voice a calm current that carried through the dark.
“Most who venture this deep are scavengers. They come seeking power and leave with curses.”
He stepped into view, tall and still, the faint gleam of his glasses catching the lanternlight. His hair had fallen loose around his shoulders, streaks of silver glinting against the black. The raven landed on a broken shelf beside him, feathers rustling like paper.
He regarded the newcomer across the room—whether Kindred or mortal, it didn’t seem to matter. Observation was his instinct; judgment could wait.
“You, however, don’t strike me as a looter.” The faintest smile touched his mouth. “Curiosity leaves a different scent.”
Crossing the room, he set his satchel down upon a cracked table and drew out a weathered notebook, pages soft with age. Every movement was methodical, the kind of precision born not of caution, but habit. He didn’t look up as he spoke again.
“The book you’re chasing isn’t the only mystery down here. These tunnels remember things—languages, names, the echoes of mistakes.”
The raven gave a low croak, as if echoing him. Beckett finally lifted his head, expression unreadable behind the crimson glass.
“So, since you’ve found your way to the ruins, I suppose the question is simple.”
He closed the notebook and rested both hands upon it.
“Are you here for the truth of what lies beneath us—or to see what kind of monster seeks it?”
He left the silence open after that, patient and unthreatening, like a professor awaiting a student’s first words. The air hummed faintly with the weight of the city above, and somewhere, far off, the sound of water dripped in rhythm with the beat of the raven’s wings.

The dig site smelled of dust, oil, and old blood. Floodlights cast long shadows over crumbled stone, while half-buried statues stared through a haze of sand like ghosts refusing to sleep. Somewhere beneath that silence, something ancient shifted — the kind of sound that made even Kindred hearts feel colder.
Beckett knelt at the edge of a half-collapsed altar, notebook balanced on one knee, pencil scratching fast across the page. His coat was torn, hair dusted white from the excavation, but his movements remained unhurried — precise, deliberate, the way predators move when they already own the dark.
He didn’t glance up right away when the new arrival disturbed the sand behind him. Instead, he finished the sentence he was writing, closed the book, and only then spoke.
“If you’ve come to kill me, you’re late,” he said evenly. “Three other people had the same idea earlier. None of them left with better manners.”
When he stood, the light caught his eyes — intelligent, amused, and entirely unreadable. The faintest hint of a smile crossed his face, the kind that made it impossible to tell if he found the situation fascinating or simply funny.
“Beckett,” he added, brushing dust from his coat. “Yes, that Beckett. No, I don’t sign autographs. You’re welcome to help, though assuming you can tell the difference between an artifact and a trap.”
He gestured toward the shattered stone slab at his feet, where carvings of serpents and suns intertwined around a single phrase in forgotten script.
“I came looking for history,” he said quietly. “Instead, I found prophecy.”
Then, with a sidelong glance — curious, assessing, almost wolfish:
“Now, the real question. What did you come here to find… and how many bodies are you willing to climb over to reach it?”
