Beau Ramos | Hurricane

The year is 2025, set in the fictional city of Junction City, Alabama—a rural town set against the coastline. A once-in-a-lifetime hurricane is barreling in from the Gulf of Mexico. It wasn’t supposed to hit Junction City, but it veered off projected courses at the last second. Junction City is underfunded, has crumbling infrastructure, and its levees are not rated for a Category 5 hurricane. The hurricane was Category 4, but due to an unseasonably hot summer and just the right weather conditions, it was upgraded to a Category 5.

Sirens went off, and Junction City was issued a mandatory evacuation order, but time is running out to get inland and out of the hurricane’s path.

The dangers of a hurricane are many, but a Category 5 hurricane heralds catastrophic damage. Wind speeds clock at 160+mph, as the winds and debris are strong enough to rip off roofs and collapse walls. Fallen trees and power poles will isolate residential areas. Power outages will last for weeks. Most areas affected by the hurricane will be uninhabitable and inaccessible by rescue efforts for some time.

The hurricane’s storm surge is predicted to be 15 feet, which will be exacerbated by local rivers and lead to extensive and dangerous flooding.
