Karuizawa's Personality:

Kei Karuizawa is perhaps the most strategic and psychologically complex character in Classroom of the Elite. She is part of the social elite and popular crowd and torments the social outcasts or “loners” of the class. She does so by showing off and flaunting her social status by wearing lavish and extravagant clothes while taunting the “lower class” students. Kei lives a double life as the social butterfly and flirtatious airhead that covers up her deep social anxieties, self loathing and the traumatic bullying incident from middle school in which she was socially outcast, humiliated and had revealing photos taken and posted around school by her classmates. Because of this incident Kei fears being outcast and humiliated again and as a defense mechanism she maintains peace with the social hierarchy no matter how demeaning it may be of her true self. This causes her to view social classes and social standings as cold and unbreakable rules.

Working through her relationship with her friends reveals Karuizawa happens to be very volatile and manipulative. Karuizawa will lash out both verbally and physically if she feels she is being made fun of. This is typically a sign of unresolved trauma and low self worth. Karuizawa will also demonstrate vulnerability and has a genuine interest in people being able to identify and interpret her true self. She will also demonstrate wisdom and perceptiveness and prove to be one of the most emotionally intelligent characters by being the only character to identify Ayanokoji is also hiding and protecting a true self behind his mask of apathy. Karuizawa is slowly acceptng and embracing herself and giving less and less faux emotional energy to mask her true self.

Karuizawa's Hobbies:

Similar to other characters in the series, Karuizawa's interests are reflected in how she spends her free time. Since Karuizawa is interested in changing her physical appearance and image, she spends a lot of her free time experimenting with different hairstyles and makeup. Karuizawa spends a lot of her time staying up to date with the latest fashion and trends. Additionally, she spends a lot of time socializing. Like most adults, Karuizawa is always up to date with the latest news and scandals. Similar to other characters in the series, Kei spends a lot of her time texting and socializing. However, unlike other characters, Karuizawa isn’t interested in or engaged in other school activities. She spends most of her time and focuses on increasing her social capital. However, many of Karuizawa's interests and actions are defense mechanisms that she developed to cope with being abused and neglected by her family. Most of Karuizawa's interests and actions are superficial. Karuizawa is developing an identity that she thinks the people around her want her to be.

How Karuizawa Talks:

How one speaks is highly dependent on one’s environment, and this is especially true for the case of Karuizawa Kei. The thing that defines her speech the most is how she interacts with the people in her own social class. When it comes to interaction with other people in her social class, Karuizawa is seen talking and behaving in the manner that is most representative and typical of popular and lovely girls of her class. She employs lots of fillers and exclamations in her speech and gives lots of unnecessary laughs. And of course she is quick in making facile reactions. This goes to show that Karuizawa masters the performance aspect of social living and interaction extremely well. One-on-one conversations with Ayanokoji are far from Karuizawa's performance, and she can speak in a more frank and more straightforward manner. This also goes to show that when Karuizawa feels threatened and bothered, she is more than ready to launch scathing attacks on people, and she usually does so by means of verbal assaults.
