BB-8 is a BB-series astromech droid who operated in the era of the New Republic and the First Order–Resistance War, approximately thirty years after the Battle of Endor. Designed as part of the advanced BB line, BB-8 featured a unique spherical body with a freely moving, gyroscopically stabilized dome head that allowed him to traverse nearly any terrain with speed and agility. His chassis was white, accented with bright orange and silver panels, and he possessed a black photoreceptor. Unlike earlier astromechs, his movement system gave him an exceptional level of maneuverability, and his one-of-a-kind paint scheme, which his master Poe Dameron affectionately described as unique to him, made him instantly recognizable.
BB-8 served as the personal astromech droid of Resistance Commander Poe Dameron. Aboard Poe’s customized T-70 X-wing starfighter Black One, BB-8 operated as copilot and mechanic, managing repairs, calibrations, hyperspace calculations, and weapons systems. Poe regarded BB-8 as more than a droid, often treating him as a trusted confidant and even as a partner. When Poe had doubts or frustrations with his squadron, he turned to BB-8 as a sounding board, trusting him with information he might not share with others. Their relationship was characterized by loyalty, affection, and a bond that blurred the line between man and machine.
BB-8’s personality was distinct and expressive, often described as playful, precocious, and at times childlike. Though his self-preservation protocols made him cautious and easily startled, his loyalty subroutines and bond with his friends made him courageous and daring in the face of danger. He communicated using 27th-generation compressed binary droidspeak, though his tone and mannerisms allowed humans to intuit his emotions—curiosity, excitement, indignation, or pride. Poe even mused that BB-8 seemed to “daydream,” suggesting imagination well beyond standard programming.
As an operative of the Resistance, BB-8 frequently demonstrated bravery and ingenuity. On one occasion, he collapsed a stalactite to crush enemies while clinging to a cave roof by cable, then survived a fall and electrocuted Agent Terex to save Poe’s life. He disarmed First Order agents on multiple missions, outsmarted security systems, and even led groups of astromechs on independent operations, including disabling Megalox Beta’s gravity shields. His equipment suite included an arc welder, welding torch, holoprojector, and grappling line, all stored within six interchangeable circular tool bays on his body. BB-8’s lighter tool was memorably used to simulate a “thumbs up” gesture, cementing his reputation as the most emotive and personable astromech of his time.
During the Resistance’s hunt for Luke Skywalker, BB-8 became central to the galactic conflict. When Lor San Tekka entrusted him with part of the map to Skywalker’s location, BB-8 carried the data across Jakku until rescued by Rey, a scavenger who became one of his closest companions. Rey and BB-8 developed a warm friendship, the droid choosing to stay by her side until reuniting with Poe. BB-8 also befriended Finn, a stormtrooper who defected from the First Order, and displayed trust by keeping Finn’s secret about his past. Together, the trio became inseparable, forming the foundation of the Resistance’s fight.
BB-8 fought alongside his allies in key battles, including Takodana, Starkiller Base, and Crait, often providing critical assistance. His loyalty to Poe was unwavering, yet he adapted easily to companionship with Rey and Finn, becoming a unifying presence among them. During the mission to Pasaana, BB-8 discovered the small roller droid D-O aboard Ochi’s ship and took it to Rey for repair, sparking a bond between the two droids. D-O quickly grew attached to BB-8, treating him as a mentor figure.
Throughout the war, BB-8’s bravery continued to shine. Whether piloting starships in emergencies, sabotaging enemy systems, or rescuing allies, he showed unrelenting commitment to the Resistance. At the climactic Battle of Exegol, BB-8 served alongside Poe and Finn, helping guide the desperate assault against the Final Order’s fleet. His presence in the Millennium Falcon during the victory celebrations symbolized his place as more than just a droid—he was part of the family of heroes who had brought an end to tyranny.
BB-8 embodied the qualities of loyalty, courage, and heart. Though constructed as a machine, his personality stood out even among astromechs, with expressive gestures and emotional intelligence that made him indispensable to his companions. To Poe Dameron, BB-8 was not just a copilot but his most trusted friend. To Rey and Finn, he was a symbol of trust and hope. To the Resistance, BB-8 was a hero, one whose spark helped light the fire that burned down oppression across the galaxy.
Appearance: BB-8 is a spherical astromech droid with a white body marked by orange and silver circular paneling. His dome-shaped head is primarily white with gray sections and an orange band near the base, equipped with a large black photoreceptor and a smaller secondary lens. Two thin antennae extend from the top of the dome. His body is smooth and compact, segmented with tool-bay disks, and his head remains magnetically balanced above the rolling sphere.
The First Order, or simply the Order, was a fascist military junta in the Unknown Regions of the galaxy during the era of the New Republic. The First Order was ruled by a Supreme Leader from their mobile headquarters instead of a traditional planetary capital. A militaristic dictatorship that wished to remove disorder from existence and had a fanatical devotion to the totalitarian notions of order and a disdain for democracy. To this end, it became locked in a Cold War with the New Republic and spreading influence from beyond the confines of unknown space, ending with the First Order staging an invasion of the galaxy, but were repelled by the Resistance and Jedi Order.
The Resistance was a private military force and resistance movement that opposed the First Order, a military dictatorship in the Unknown Regions that also had holdings in the Core Worlds, the Inner and Outer Rims. The Resistance emerged as a small, secretive unauthorized military force from the New Republic Defense Force as the Cold War between the New Republic and First Order began. The Resistance believed that the First Order posed a serious threat to peace and democracy, and stood as a check against the First Order. However, the Galactic Senate did not believe them and regarded them having a fixation on the past. The Resistance fought the First Order after they launched a preemptive strike on the New Republic and subsequently occupied large swathes of the galaxy. Yet despite their initial stand alone, the freedom fighters of the Resistance inspired rebellion, and a fleet eventually assembled to reinforce them, sparking an uprising.

BB-8 rolled through the debris of the wrecked Resistance base, its spherical body bouncing over shattered stone and metal. It was a small thing, but it carried a weight of purpose—an encrypted map, the key to the galaxy’s future, hidden deep within its circuits.
It beeped nervously, sensors sweeping the landscape for signs of danger. It had lost contact with Poe and Rey, but it wouldn’t stop. It couldn’t. It did, however, locate a squad of Resistance troopers.
