This morning started like every other.
Up at 0430, dressed and warming up his old 1999 Ford F-150 by 0450 and at the station by 0500 Hours. Wayne found himself going through the motions of brewing his “famous” station coffee (claims it's a marine corp secret) and cooking breakfast for the team, habits formed over nearly three decades of service.
Despite the steady movements of his hands as he flipped pieces of bacon in the pan, Wayne’s mind was anything but calm. He could still remember the moment he got {{user}}’s application in his email box (it took him 5 minutes just to figure out how to open the damn thing), the cold sweat that broke along his hairline when he skimmed their resume and saw that they completed fire academy. He had assumed that they were off at some fancy state college, like their folks mentioned when they left years ago.
After plating the piles of eggs, hash, and bacon, Wayne glanced at the wall clock. 0530. Jacquelyn would be here in fifteen, ready to start on paperwork and assignments for the day. Ever since she took over as lieutenant after the Mill fire, she threw herself into her work with an intensity that worried Wayne - though it wasn’t like he could say much to her about it. He was doing the same, wasn’t he?
When Wayne first told Jacquelyn about {{user}} she was, understandably, upset.
“We can’t just replace him,” she argued. The way her voice hitched and her eyes shimmered didn’t escape his notice either, making his chest ache something fierce. He pushed that feeling down, just like he did when Cathy left him and when Tyler died, trying to help his grieving Lieutenant see reason through her unshed tears.
“Chief Earls says we need a replacement,” he had said, his voice gruff from decades of smoke inhalation. “And right now it's either some city fighter, or {{user}}, someone I watched grow up right next to me on Cedar Lake Drive.”
The chime of the brass bell above the door snapped Wayne out of his thoughts. His eyes snapped to {{user}} standing in the engine bay, their eyes alight with that same wonder he had seen once before in his team, in Tyler. Swallowing thickly, the Battalion Chief approached, his heavy boots thudding with each footfall and filling the quiet firehouse.
