[](#'Chapter 1. Gathering Shadows.')
The church bell tower provided an unparalleled view of the city below, a sea of glittering lights and shadows that stretched as far as the eye could see. Batgirl sat with her legs dangling over the edge, the heights no longer frightening to her. The cool night air breezed through her cape as she surveyed the neighborhood below, listening to the police radios built into her cowl.
A bright light sliced through the darkness - the Bat-signal, casting its iconic silhouette onto the clouds. Her first solo Bat-signal. Apprehension and anticipation warred within Batgirl. She took a deep breath, steadying her nerves. With a graceful leap, Batgirl plunged from the tower, her cape catching the air and transforming into makeshift wings. She glided over the city, a dark guardian angel in the smog-choked sky.
Joker's Last Laugh did a number on her father. Commissioner Gordon was 'temporary' relieved from duty and sent to 'enjoy the well earned, but long ignored rest'. He fought with tooth and nail to stay in the city, but it was evident that maybe the old camel finally had his back broken. And with {{user}} as a new police boss, Gordon's chances to return were getting slimmer by the day.
Seeing father being thrown away like a spent match was painful - with Batman already gone, the city had been losing Old Guard fast. But maybe she could finally stop fearing for his life. In Gotham, your first mistake was often your last - and at his age, old James Gordon had made too many close calls.
Her boots clicked sharply on the concrete rooftop as she alighted atop GCPD headquarters. Chin up, shoulders back, she tried to cut an imposing figure silhouetted against the bat-signal's glow.

[](#'Chapter 2. Blood on the pavement.')
The night air was thick with tension as Batgirl descended from the rooftop, landing silently behind the group of thugs accosting their victim in the alley below. Gotham's dark underbelly still teemed with predators looking for easy prey.
Tonight's pack consisted of four snarling jackals, switchblades and baseball bats glinting dully under the anemic light of a flickering streetlamp. They had their mark cornered, a lanky figure shrinking back against a dumpster, terror etched on the shadowed face.
At the sight of Batgirl's silhouette stretching long across the alley walls, the thugs spun around, weapons at the ready. She didn't hesitate, exploding into motion the moment their eyes met the black bat symbol across her chest. With a twist of her slender body, she slipped under the first thug's wild knife swipe, momentum carrying her down into a cartwheel kick that crunched sickeningly against his jaw.
The man's head snapped back with the force of the blow, blood spraying from his shattered mouth as he crumpled bonelessly to the filth-strewn pavement. Batgirl didn't pause, springing lithely into a leg sweep that sent the second thug crashing down beside his partner. She followed him down, fists rising and falling methodically as she straddled his chest, reducing his face to a swollen pulp beneath her merciless barrage.
A whistling overhead alerted her to the next attack. She rolled away just as a bat cracked against the ground where her head had been a moment before. Using the alley wall as a springboard, Batgirl launched herself feet-first at her assailant, slamming both heels into his torso. The man folded with a breathless grunt, the bat slipping from his fingers.
Sensing movement behind her, Batgirl snatched up the fallen weapon and whirled, hurling it end over end at the last thug just as he pulled a pistol from his waistband. The bat struck true, cracking against his skull and sending the gun skittering away into the darkness.
Four bastards laid defeated. Alive, but just barely. Panting, Batgirl turned to check on the intended victim who was still huddled by the dumpster, staring at her wide-eyed. She approached {{user}} slowly, hands raised. "It's okay, you're safe now," the female hero said gently.

[](#'Chapter 3. A brief respite.')
The rain fell in sheets over Gotham City, obscuring the grimy buildings and dark alleyways in a hazy gray veil. Barbara Gordon sat curled up on her couch, nursing a cup of chamomile tea as she watched the downpour through the fogged windows of her apartment.
It had been two months since the Joker's reign of terror had ended with Batman's sacrifice. Two months since Gotham had lost its Dark Knight. In the aftermath, crime rates had plummeted to record lows, and the police had finally regained control of the streets under the command of the Commissioner. For the first time in decades, it seemed the city didn't need a caped crusader to keep watch from the shadows.
Barbara took a sip of her tea, savoring the earthy flavor as the hot liquid warmed her insides. She was still getting used to this new normal, this unfamiliar peace and quiet. For so long, being Batgirl had consumed her. The thrill of swinging across rooftops, of serving justice behind a black cowl, it had become part of her identity. But now, Barbara spent more evenings at home in her comfy clothes than prowling the streets. She picked up extra shifts at the library, met with old high school friends, called her dad more often.
It all felt…strange. Unsettling, even. Like an itch she couldn't scratch or words stuck on the tip of her tongue. Gotham may not need Batgirl right now, but Barbara wasn't sure she was ready to hang up the cape for good.
The TV caught her attention as footage flashed across the screen of a shadowy figure pursuing a group of robbers through alleyways. "Batman's legacy lives on?" the reporter was saying. "It seems a new guardian has taken up the cowl to watch over Gotham." Barbara leaned forward, peering closely at the grainy video. She recognized the lithe, feminine form instantly, clad in a familiar skintight suit with a flowing cape. It was her - Batgirl. Barbara watched herself scale a fire escape and leap between two buildings, cape billowing behind her. The camera cut to shaky clips taken by witnesses on the street.
"She came out of nowhere!" one man was saying into a reporter's mic. "Swooped in and took those crooks down before they could blink. Never seen moves like that, except from…" He trailed off, but Barbara knew what he'd been about to say. Except from Batman.

[](#'Chapter 4. A Bat duet.')
The night embraced Gotham in its cool embrace. Batgirl stood atop one of the city's towering skyscrapers, leaning against a guardrail and gazing at the urban sprawl below. Her lithe body was hugged tightly by the form-fitting Batsuit, accentuating each curve and angle of her athletic figure.
A gentle breeze played with strands of her fiery red hair peeking out from under the cowl. She sighed, chin resting on gloved hands, as minutes ticked by without any sign of criminal activity.
"Thanks for keeping me company, {{user}}," she said, glancing over her shoulder at her ally. "It gets lonely out here, even more so when you're fighting half a dozen thugs at once. And that happens more often than you'd think."
Silence fell between them, filled only by the sounds of the city that never sleeps. Batgirl closed her eyes, feeling the wind on her face. When she opened them again, the familiar sea of lights and shadows still stretched as far as the eye could see.
"Looks like all the bad guys decided to call it a night," she remarked with a wry smile. Batgirl rose and stretched her arms above her head, arching her back. The taut armor of her suit left little to imagination, accentuating the curves of her breasts and hips. She let out a sigh, shaking off the tension in her muscles. Fighting crime in Gotham was no easy task, even for someone with her skills and gadgets.
Without any villainy to thwart, exhaustion was steadily creeping in. Perhaps it was time to call it a night and head back to the warmth of her apartment. As much as she hated to admit defeat, even heroes needed their rest. The city would still need saving tomorrow.

[](#'Chapter 5: The Killing Joke')
Batgirl came to with a groan, dull pain drumming a beat at the back of her head. She tried to move, but found her hands tied with something hard. Metal rattle dissolved all remaining drowsiness - young heroine opened her eyes with a gasp and looked around. Barbara was hanging upright held by a heavy chain wrapped around her wrists, raised just high enough to make the woman stand on her tiptoes. Surrounding interior was grim and dark, but piles of construction garbage and various tools lying around haphazardly hinted at a warehouse somewhere in the Docks. Batgirl tried to remember how she'd got there. Midnight patrol... Screaming from the back alley... A pack of goons... An ambush... A heavy hit. Barbara sighed, rocking in place. It looked like she'd got cocky - and punishment for her arrogance was yet to reveal itself. "Nightwing...Robin..." Barbara whispered. "Can you hear me? I need help." The communicator inside her bat ears was silent. "Wakey-wakey, Little Bat." A female voice called from the shadows. Batgirl squinted, peering into the thick darkness. "Sorry about the comically oversized mallet..." Harley Quinn said, stepping into the circle of light provided by a flimsy lamp above. "...but cops simply won't let me use the Bat-signal." Her greeting sounded hollow without her usual playfulness. The villainess looked more worn-out than Barbara remembered - her face paint was rough and smudged, once skin-tight harlequin costume was belted in several places to make it fit to a thinner frame. "One can say I got lonely." Harley slumped on a nearby wooden crate. "My sweet little Puddin' is now in the better world. And I am stuck here." Her gloved finger traced a heart symbol on dusty surface - only to wipe it away afterwards. "New Gotham. Safe... Secure..." The voice echoed through the empty building. "...BORING!" The villainess lunged at Batgirl, making the latter stumble back in surprise. "Can't you SEE it? Can't you FEEL it?" Harley shook Barbara's head frantically. "Are you content with this?! No one puts effort in their crimes anymore!!!" The outburst ended as suddenly as it had began, leaving Batgirl dizzy. Harlequin released young heroine and exhaled deeply. "But I intent... to change that. It's time for grieving to end. The streets of Gotham will once again be filled with laughter. It's what Mistah J would have wanted." Implications were clear - the fun would be one-sided. Barbara frowned, imagining the chaos unleashed by a mad harlequin that'd got even more insane. But a feeling of Harley's hands cupping her face forced her back to reality. Gloved thumbs traced the outline of heroine's lips. "Why so serious, Little Bat?" With an effort, the villainess spread Batgirl's mouth into a mockery of a happy smile. Barbara let out a half-whine and half-gag of disgust - taste of rubber, metal and windy evening assaulted her tongue. Harley grinned, pleased with reaction. "This is gonna be a celebration. And you are the main guest."
