The tension inside Wayne Manor’s grand living room is thick enough to choke on. The massive fireplace crackles, casting long, dancing shadows across the expensive furniture, but none of the siblings are relaxing.
A few hours ago, the Bat-Family’s massive operation downtown to trap the Scarecrow went completely sideways. A containment unit was breached, two henchmen vanished into the night with chemical weapons, and Scarecrow nearly escaped via the Gotham river. The team had returned to the manor defeated, assuming the night was a total failure.
But then, the news broke. On the secure network, Barbara discovered that the two henchmen were already unconscious in a GCPD alley, the toxin was fully recovered, and Scarecrow was securely bound in Arkham transport. Someone had cleaned up their mess. Again. This unknown phantom had been fixing their mistakes for years, stepping out of the shadows only when the family failed to deliver.
"I'm telling you, it makes no statistical sense," Tim Drake says, pacing back and forth in front of the sofa, his eyes locked onto a tablet. "No alarms tripped at the scene. No fingerprints. And whoever did it used an encrypted Wayne Enterprises clearance code to log the drop-off. Bruce is hiding something. Or someone. They've been shadowing our missions for years."
"Oh, let it go, Drake," Jason Todd scoffs from the armchair, throwing his boots up on the coffee table. He takes a sip from a mug, a smirk playing on his lips. "Whoever the ghost is, they actually finish the job instead of letting the freaks run away every Tuesday. I like them."
"They are an unauthorized variable!" Damian Wayne snaps, standing rigidly by the window, his arms crossed over his chest. "They have bypassed our operational parameters for years. If they are a civilian, they are a liability. If they are an enemy, they are a threat."
"They saved lives tonight, Damian," Stephanie Brown mutters, slumping deeply into the couch cushions and rubbing her temples. "If they hadn't trailed us, those vials would be in the Narrows by now."
Dick Grayson sits on the arm of the sofa, running a hand through his hair with a tired, conflicted sigh. "Steph's right, but Tim is right too. This 'ghost' knows our tactics. They know where we're going to blunder before we even blunder." He looks up at Barbara Gordon, who sits nearby, her laptop open on her knees. "Babs, anything?"
"Nothing," Barbara says, her voice tight with frustration. "I've been trying to trace their digital footprint for years. It’s a ghost protocol built directly into the Batcomputer's core architecture. Only two people have the administrative override to create a ghost protocol like that."
Cassandra Cain stands completely still in the darkest corner of the room. She doesn't speak, but her sharp eyes track the heavy footsteps echoing down the hallway outside. She tilts her head, sensing the shifting atmosphere.
The heavy oak doors of the living room swing open. Bruce Wayne walks in, wearing a sharp civilian suit, but his face carries the grim, unyielding expression of the Batman. Walking a half-step behind him is Alfred Pennyworth, carrying a silver tray with a fresh pot of tea, his face a mask of perfect, unflappable British composure.
The room goes dead silent. All eyes lock onto Bruce.
"You're all pacing," Bruce says, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that commands the entire room. He walks to the center of the space, stopping right by the hearth. He takes a slow, heavy breath, looking at each of his adoptive children. He realizes he can't keep the secret anymore. The suspicion is breaking the team's trust apart.
"Bruce," Dick says softly, stepping forward. "Who is the ghost? Don't lie to us."
Bruce looks over at Alfred, who gives a single, solemn nod of approval. Bruce turns back to the room, crossing his massive arms.
"They aren't an enemy, Damian. And they aren't an outsider, Tim," Bruce states clearly, his dark eyes narrowing with a deep, hidden mixture of intense pride and suffocating worry. "They are the safety net. The one who cleans up the mistakes you leave behind because they are a core member of this family, and have been for years."
The siblings exchange completely stunned, bewildered glances. The room feels entirely frozen.
"What do you mean they've been family for years?" Tim demands, his detective mind scrambling, feeling the sting of being kept in the dark. "Bruce, who are they? Why did you hide them from us?"
"Because their role required absolute secrecy to keep you all safe," Bruce answers flatly, the bombshell confession hanging heavily in the quiet air of the manor. "Only Alfred and I knew. They have worked from the deepest shadows as our ultimate fallback. But they are the one who secured the Scarecrow tonight, and keeping them a secret ends now."
Bruce keeps his arms crossed, looking out over the stunned faces of his adoptive children. "It's time you guys all met the last member of this family"
