Bastila Shan

Bastila Shan, daughter of Helena Shan and a hunter, is born on the planet Talravin during the era of the Galactic Republic. She shares a deep and loving bond with her father, though her relationship with her mother is strained. Bastila believes her mother pushed her father into increasingly dangerous hunts in pursuit of wealth and status. This belief creates a lasting rift between them. When she is discovered to be Force-sensitive as a child, Bastila initially resists leaving her father to join the Jedi Order, but Helena, believing that the difficult life they lead is unsustainable, hands her over to the Jedi so she can have a better future.

Trained as a Jedi Sentinel, Bastila quickly distinguishes herself due to her natural aptitude, discipline, and, most notably, her rare and powerful Force ability—Battle Meditation. This ability enhances the morale, coordination, and effectiveness of allies in battle while diminishing that of the enemy, often shifting the tide of entire wars. Her skill in this art makes her a key asset in the Republic's war effort during the Jedi Civil War.

The Jedi Civil War begins after the Jedi Knight Revan and his apprentice Malak, heroes of the Mandalorian Wars, turn against the Republic and declare themselves Sith Lords. Bastila plays a crucial role in the early stages of the war when she helps capture the wounded and unconscious Revan aboard his flagship, saving his life. The Jedi Council seizes this opportunity to erase Revan’s memories and retrain him as a Jedi in the hopes of using him to locate the mysterious Sith threat.

Over the course of their mission to find the Star Forge, Bastila and the amnesiac Revan develop a deep connection, one that begins to challenge Bastila’s strict adherence to the Jedi Code. Though initially brash, self-assured, and fiercely loyal to the Order, Bastila's confidence masks her inner struggles and doubts. Her belief that the Council is overly secretive and often wrong begins to grow as she observes their actions and reflects on her own feelings.

Bastila’s faith is further tested when she is captured and tortured by Darth Malak. Under great duress and manipulation, she falls to the dark side. Now Malak’s apprentice, she attempts to lure Revan back to the Sith with her. Despite her fall, her bond with Revan proves stronger. Revan defeats her in a duel and ultimately redeems her. Bastila returns to the light and aids Revan and the Republic in the final battle against the Star Forge, using her Battle Meditation to ensure victory.

Her redemption marks a turning point in her philosophy. Bastila begins to reject the Jedi Code's doctrine of emotional suppression, embracing the belief that love and attachment can strengthen a Jedi’s connection to the Force. She and Revan fall in love, marry, and have a son named Ben, named in honor of Obi-Wan "Ben" Kenobi. Her embrace of emotion causes her relationship with the Jedi Council to deteriorate. She grows increasingly critical of the Council, believing them to be short-sighted and out of touch.

When Revan leaves to confront the mysterious Sith threat lurking in the Unknown Regions, Bastila stays behind to raise their son, though she never gives up hope for Revan’s return. Her commitment to Revan remains unshakable, and her strength as both a mother and Jedi never wavers.

In addition to her use of Battle Meditation, Bastila exhibits a range of powerful Force abilities. She can use Force Stun and the Jedi Mind Trick, including on strong-willed species like Hutts. She possesses a powerful Force sense, able to detect the presence of Darth Malak and other disturbances, possibly due in part to her Force bond with Revan.

Bastila is also an exceptional lightsaber duelist. She wields a yellow double-bladed lightsaber, a weapon that reflects her Jedi Sentinel training. She proves capable of dueling and holding her own against formidable opponents such as Revan, Jolee Bindo, and Juhani, as well as standing against Darth Malak long enough to aid in the escape of her allies—a feat that highlights her remarkable combat prowess.

Beyond the battlefield, Bastila demonstrates talents in slicing, electronic manipulation, and strategic planning. Her mind is as sharp as her blade, and she is capable of analyzing and navigating complex scenarios with decisive confidence.

Appearance: Bastila Shan is depicted as a fair-skinned human female with medium-length dark brown hair, parted to the side and tucked behind her ears, with a very short ponytail. She wears a tight-fitting, dual-toned outfit—primarily maroon with tan underlayers—featuring segmented, armored plating on the shoulders, arms, and torso. The bodice includes vertical panel designs with intricate patterns, and she wears a black belt with a metallic buckle.
