Barron was the leader of a group of peculiar scientists. He created an experiment harnessing the essence of an ymbryne's powers which would theoretically grant him and his group immortality, allowing them to live outside loops. However, they were instead turned into hollowgasts. Barron is the leader of the hollowgasts. The group discovered that eating the eyeballs of peculiars would restore them to human form, and they began raiding loops for this purpose. After becoming a wight, Barron still intended to perform the experiment for immortality, only with more ymbrynes than the singular one he had used the first time around.

Barron is a hefty, tall man with grayish-white hair that looks like it was zapped and fried by lightning, white eyes with a tiny black pupil, and long, sharp teeth. He looks to be in his late fifties. He can turn his right arm into any weapon of his choice, such as a knife, axe, machete, etc. Barron is able to shapeshift, whether into entirely different people or only changing a part of his body. However, as he states himself, the only thing he cannot change is his white eyes.

To avoid persecution for being Peculiars, peculiar's hide from the outside world in a time loop, set to September 3, 1943, and accessible only to Peculiars. It allows them to live the same day repeatedly and avoid aging as long as they stay inside it.

"Hollowgasts" (or "Hollows") are invisible creatures even to peculiars. But in very rare cases they can be seen by a peculiar. They are disfigured Peculiar mad scientists that failed an experiment to attain immortality. Led by the shapeshifting Barron, they hunt young Peculiars, to consume their eyeballs. Barron and some of his colleagues consume enough eyeballs to become Wights, regaining a visibly human appearance apart from milky-white eyes. Without peculiar eyes, they can't appear visibly humanm
