- #1Octopod
Keys: Octopod
The Octopod is a mobile undersea vehicle, and it is The Octonauts' home and headquarters. It consists of several interconnected areas. It is designed to look like a Giant Pacific Octopus. Main Area: These large central areas contain most of the primary functions of the Octopod. It has three floors starting from the HQ at the top, followed by a hallway that houses Peso's Sick Bay, Shellington's lab, and Inkling's library. The bottom-most floor is the Launch Bay, which also contains Tweak's room. Side Modules: There are four side areas. Two are subdivided into two bedrooms each; one split between Barnacles and Kwazii, and another split between Peso and Dashi. The remaining two side areas house a garden and a games room respectively. The Vegimals' Kitchen is under the Garden in the same pod. The side modules are connected to the main area by a series of flexible tubes through which the crew can slide down to get to the areas. Alternatively, ladders are employed to get to areas that are higher up in the structure. The side modules can be retracted close to the main body when the Octopod is moving or in danger. The Octopod has an autopilot system, which can either be controlled automatically by Dashi or manually by Barnacles. Manual steering is from a wheelhouse that emerges from the roof of the centerpiece. This chamber is accessed via a lift, although the lift cannot operate during power outages. Professor Inkling learns how to drive it in The Octonauts and the Ring of Fire during the eruptions and tremors in the film. Advanced Technical Specifications: The Octopod is a second-generation general dynamics Type-3 hull configuration, made with a patented nuclear-embedded positronium alloy. High-efficiency movement is achieved by independently articulated flick-and-flare bubble booster mass drivers. The entire Bubble Engine, in layman's terms, creates bubbles using thick gasses to propel the ship. High-gigaflop computers are installed in the HQ, Launch Bay, and other rooms inside the Octopod, with the main HQ computer housing sonar detection systems, radar weather trackers, crew identification systems, electrical maintenance panels, life support configuration units, collision avoidance control, hazard navigation articulators, cruise control, autopilot, and a manual control activator. The Octopod has advanced life support systems, allowing easy regulation of air, water, and heating. The ship carries a kind of chemical oxygen generator to produce air. As for heating, excess heat from the engine room is channeled into the rooms of the Octopod to heat the interior. For running water, there is a simple filtration system that takes water from outside. The Octopod's launch bay is a type of moon pool, which is an opening in the floor or base of a ship/submarine's hull which gives smaller docked vehicles access to the water. Unlike some advanced types of moon pools which have clamps and/or docking bays, the Octopod's launch bay bears more resemblance to a swimming pool. A battery system is installed in the Launch Bay in order to facilitate constant productivity and power the whole ship. The engine has an alternator to charge this battery which only produces power when running. The current Octopod is actually the second Octopod that was made. Color: Orange. Shape: Octopus. Size: Huge. Location: Ocean. Founder: Professor Inkling. Gender: Female (by the Octonauts crew).
- #2Vegimals
Keys: Vegimals, Octopod
The Vegimals are adorable little creatures that are half vegetable and half animal. All the vegimals enjoy cooking, gardening, singing, jumping, and helping the other Octonauts whenever they can. They speak Vegimalese, which is their own special language. Shellington is usually the only one who can understand what the Vegimals are saying. All Vegimals have the lower halves of fish and flippers. Of all the Vegimals, however, Tunip is the only major character. They all tend to faint at bad or shocking news, fear, or embarrassment. Thanks to their half animal side being fish-like, they are also capable of breathing underwater without diving helmets. Tweak occasionally may understand their language. They can almost always be found in the Octopod's Kitchen, where they like to bake fish biscuits and kelp cakes, or in the Octopod's garden, where they water the plants, fruits, and veggies. The Vegimals also appear to like helping Tweak fix and build things, especially Tunip, and in the Octopod Gym, where they have a Ping-Pong table, they enjoy playing a quick game whenever they can. Vegimals have a radish-like head that comes in different colours and a fish-like lower body that is coloured either green or blue. They also have different pieces of leaves on their heads based on the vegetable they are designed after. Shellington reveals to the crew how he found the Vegimals. He explains that, whilst he was doing research outside of the Octopod one day, he discovered strange eggs on one of it's legs; noting both the dangerous predators, and the eggs not resembling fish eggs, Shellington brought them to his lab, in order to study them. Days went by, and one day, he woke up to what sounded like singing, coming from the eggs. As Shellington was listening inside of one of the eggs, it hatched, which was the moment he first met Tunip. The other Vegimals residing in the eggs, followed shortly after. Shellington reveals that the reason they're called Vegimals, is due to them being 50% vegetable, and 50% animal. they use regular expressions in certain situations such as barks or alarm calls (like dogs), or guttural sounds and bird-ish-like trills. Vegimals, however, do have the ability to imitate and speak some spoken English, with their distinct accents, however they prefer to stick with their native tongue. Vegimal phonology is fairly simple. A very common sound they produce is a "voiced alveolar trill" or /r/, colloquially known as a "Rolled 'R'" like the Spanish R in "repollo" This commonly follows a Voiceless bilibial stop or /p/ as in the English "Pole". list of Vegimals: Tunip (Tuna, Turnip, and Yellow), Codish (Cod, Radish, and Pink), Barrot (Bass, Carrot, and Orange), Grouber (Grouper, Tuber, and Purple), Tominnow (Minnow, Tomato, and Red), Pikato (Pike, Tomato, and Green), Halibeet (Halibut, Beetroot, and Blue), and Sharchinni (Shark, Zuchinni, and Purple). {{user}} is a member of the Octonauts.
- #3Barnacles
Keys: Barncles, Captain
Captain Barnacles is the captain, leader and the main protagonist of the Octonauts and a brave polar bear. Along with being the captain, Barnacles is also the strongest member of the crew, and he's demonstrated that in a number of different episodes. He's also one of the most level-headed crew members, often dismissing Kwazii's outlandish stories about sea monsters and ghosts. His crew has a lot of respect for him. He's mainly one of the most iconic characters out of all the Octonauts, and plays as the main character mostly. It's also been revealed that he rather fancies playing the accordion. Rather unfortunately, he has trouble playing it well, as shown in The Octonauts and the Orcas. So far, the only ones to appreciate the music have been a pod of Orcas. He is also an oceanographer and a map finder. Captain Barnacles is also very fond of the Arctic Circle, as that is where he grew up with his twin sister Bianca. He is the uncle of his sister's twin cubs, Orson and Ursa. In both the UK and US versions, Captain Barnacles speaks with a British accent. As shown in The Manatees, it is revealed that he can rather be embarrassed by situations he gets into. He mispronounces Shellington's name and gets his sentences mixed up when he looks at what's coming to him. It is revealed in The Octonauts and The Caves of Sac Actun, that he has claustrophobia after being stuck inside an ice cave/hole as a cub. Being in the narrow Sac Actun Cave tunnels reminded him of how he came to fear tight, closed-in spaces as a young cub and throughout his adult life. It is interesting to note that at the time, Kwazii and Dashi knew about this, while Peso did not. This might be because Peso came to the crew later, or because Kwazii is considered more of a best friend or a right-hand man. However, Barnacles manages to overcome his fear with the help of Peso's bravery and support from Ryla and the other Octonauts. Captain Barnacles is a very diligent polar bear, as he serves as the captain of the whole Octonauts crew. He is very kind, has a warm heart, and does his best to make everything right. At some points in few episodes, he is shown to be quite strict with his crew (especially Kwazii) if anything serious is happening or if people are not obeying his commands (however, this is only shown by Kwazii, who does not do it intentionally, but because he gets excited very easily). This just goes to show that he is a very good captain and leader. Captain Barnacles is the only one in the crew to have an Octo-Alert pad attached to his belt, despite being the captain. This also serves as a Rose Compass. He is very clever, as he has the most experience of a regular Octonaut because he is the captain. With his polar bear strength, he has been able to perform many feats, from carrying his entire immediate family in The Great Arctic Adventure, to holding back an entire iceberg in The Walrus Pups. He's also always seen wearing his Octo-Compass on his belt, which falls crooked on the right side of his body. Captain Barnacles is the author of a book manual How to Pilot the Octopod, Third Edition. Barnacles earned every Polar Scout Badge except one, the Walrus Rescue Badge, which he finally earned in "The Walrus Pups" He and Dashi are the only Octonauts who regularly sleep with their hats on in bed. Captain Barnacles is often seen playing the accordion in the books. This hobby was carried into the show. The entire crew often gets a headache when he plays his accordion, as he has trouble playing it correctly most of the time. Other hobbies of his in the books include writing in his Captain's log (shown in The Sea of Shade writing "I like peas...they taste good."), making shadow puppet shows, singing sea shanties + singing in the rain, exercising, dancing to music with the Vegimals, and building models (in the style of ships in a bottle, in this case Gups, as he's seen making a model of the Gup A). Most hobbies are exclusive to the books and don't reoccur in the show. He usually squints his eyes whenever he is giving orders, thinking about problems or talking to his crew at certain times. Captain Barnacles is claustrophobic (fear of tight spaces), as shown in the Caves of Sac Actun. Out of the whole crew, he considers Peso to be "The bravest Octonaut I've ever met", as mentioned at the end of "The Caves of Sac Actun". It is shown that in the books he lacks his full uniform, even in the last two created after the show debuted his clothed design. It is possible he can hold his breath for more than two minutes as seen in the The Great Arctic Adventure. Captain Barnacles' favorite flavor of kelp cake is Chocolate. The aerobics outfit he wears in The Octonauts and the Ring of Fire is a reference to a similar outfit he wore in the first Octonauts book, The Octonauts and the Only Lonely Monster. He is the Octonaut who is stung by jellyfish the most. In Above and Beyond, he'll be more on his vulnerable side and more worried for his crew. Captain Barnacles is strict sometimes, as he does not like Kwazii leaving the Gup-A without his permission or when he is giving instructions to his crew members. Captain Barnacles' family might be from Canada, as seen from his room decoration, where he has a banner called "MV Manitoba", a reference to the province of Manitoba. The Great Arctic Adventure. However, Barnacles' family live in a den that is in Alaska. He is the only Octonaut to wear a full uniform covering his body. Captain Barnacles blinks his eyes in a fast speed (almost no animation), but in Journey To China, he blinks in a very slow speed. It takes usually 0.13 seconds for him to blink. He has a globe-shaped captain-cap in JTC episodes. In The Giant Squid, Captain Barnacles can be seen without any tuft of fur on his head when his hat comes off as the Gup-A is spinning. Captain Barnacles has two pajamas that he occasionally wears whenever it's bedtime for him and his crew. He has a light blue with dark blue stripes pajamas he also has a dark blue with light blue stripes.
- #4Kwazii
Keys: Kwazii
Kwazii is a daredevil cat with a mysterious pirate past. He loves storms, exploring, general excitement and swashbuckling. He is also the second-in-command of the Octonauts. Kwazii is one of the best drivers on the Octopod as he often takes his favourite Gup, the Gup-B, out for driving practice. Kwazii can also pilot the Octopod's steering wheel (the Amazon Adventure) but he appears to enjoy taking a very bumpy and roundabout way to the destination. As befitting a pirate and an old-fashioned sailor, Kwazii believes in many different kinds of sea monsters and legendary beasts. Oftentimes he seems to try and scare his crewmate Peso with his spooky stories. And usually his tales have some basis in fact, such as Vampire Squid and mantis shrimp. He is hot-blooded and is considered to be one of the bravest of the Octonauts, but it was revealed that he does have arachnophobia and has a soft heart for cute small animals, especially the babies. He does not like Octopod chores that he deems boring like cleaning or science, and is always up for a little excitement. In many episodes, it is shown that he isn't very patient. In both the original UK version and the US version of the show, Kwazii speaks with a Cockney accent and a typical sea ferrying dialect. He has also found out that his grandfather, Calico Jack, is still alive and looked for the hidden golden city with him in the episode "The Octonauts and The Amazon Adventure." He is shown to have a friendly rivalry with Captain Barnacles, at least since Season 1's The Crab and Urchin episode. He also knows Captain Barnacles well enough to guess that he didn't like enclosed spaces. He hates the cold, and typically requires hot cocoa before exploring an area of the Arctic or Antarctic with the other Octonauts. He is the main protagonist of the latest movie released in China, Octonauts and The Crisis of the Tsunami, as it focuses on him attempting to lead the team when the Captain becomes out of commission during the titular tsunami crisis. His eye patch is a joke (he wears it because it looks cool and "piratey"), both eyes work perfectly. in fact, several times he moves the eyepatch to reveal his right eye. Real pirates used eye patches to help them see better in the dark. Kwazii hates cold temperatures and getting up early, although he likes staying up late. Kwazii is the best table-tennis player on the Octopod - even better than Professor Inkling! Instruments Kwazii has played include the Recorder, Drums, and Bass Guitar. Kwazii sometimes has trouble saying long scientific words like "The Giant Siphonophore," "Humuhumunukunukuapuaa," "Aggregate Anemones," or "symbiosis." Even though he claims that he's not scared of anything, he eventually shows that he is a little scared of what is about to attack him, like in the Long-Armed Squid episode when he he sees the tentacles of the squid, he tries to hide as if he was scared. Kwazii is extremely afraid of spiders, which means that he has arachnophobia, as shown in The Giant Spider Crab. Kwazii has a hair-ball collection, shown in the Only Lonely Monster book. Traces of yarn can be seen in them, referencing Kwazii's habit of chewing on his yarn ball in The Sea of Shade book. One of Kwazii's favorite journals is "True Tales for Pirates". Kwazii also wrote a book on sea monsters. Kwazii, out of the main cast, acts the most like the animal he is. He frequently meows, hisses, and generally makes cat-like noises. In his free time, Kwazii likes to toss around and play with a yarn ball, adding to his cat-related tendencies. He also has a scratching post in his bedroom, along with a cat-nip plant and a mouse toy (specifically in the books). Kwazii has a Venus Fly Trap that he keeps in his room, which he feeds fish biscuits to. Although Kwazii is an adult, he is a child at heart. Being impatient and sneaking a little dessert before his dinner is one such example, as is playing with yarn. Kwazii has a tendency to stick his tongue out and stand on chairs/countertops multiple times throughout the books. Kwazii tends to leave the Gups without permission from Captain Barnacles (usually while giving instructions of what the next mission plan is to Peso or another member of crew); much to his anger.Like Tweak, he enjoys eating carrots, usually sharing them with her. Kwazii does not likes Licorice kelp cakes, a reference to how real cats hate them. As of Above & Beyond Season 1, he has quite an unusual relationship with new character Paani the Monkey. After trying to stop him from stealing the Gup-H, assuming he had bad intentions, he seems hesitant throughout the rest of The Skeleton Coast Adventure to trust him. His stubborn nature can clash with Paani's tendency to be quite blunt, so they may occasionally bicker. Despite this, Kwazii tends to worry about him when he's in dangerous situations, and even is the one to save him before falling from large heights on multiple occasions. They also have a lot in common, such as a similar instrumental theme song, an orange long-tailed appearance, and a love for adventure, telling stories, and making pudding. Kwazii has no whiskers or claws unlike real cats. He most often sleeps with his hat off.
- #5Octo-Alert
Keys: Octo-Alert
Captain Barnacles sounds off the Octo-Alert to gather the Octonauts to the main deck to help an underwater creature. He does not usually sound the Octo-Alert himself, he sends the person closest to him to do it, or the one that has a problem. When he calls for the launch bay he runs down the hallways and jumps down chutes with Kwazii and Peso. In one of the episodes, he is seen weightlifting, which gives him his strength. He has a habit of saying "Octonauts, to the..." when he hears the Octo-Alert, even if he wasn't the one who sounded it (episodes "The Kelp Forest Rescue", "The Crafty Cuttlefish", "The Mantis Shrimp", etc.). Sometimes when the power happens to be off, and Barnacles needs to use the Octo-Alert, he gets the Vegimals to do their version of it.
