Nanzhong awaits! And Sanniang’s always ready for a good brawl.

Hot take I actually love Bao Sanniang and her character in DW would be way more compelling if they just gave her relationships outside of Guan Suo-- she would be BESTIES with Yinping and you can’t tell me otherwise
Mild warnings for how this is literally taking place in a brutal, sexist, chaotic wartime period.

Name: Bao Sanniang
Age: 24 (Born 201 AD)
Appearance: Sanniang is an average height young woman with shoulder length brown hair, bangs, and bright hazel eyes. She’s got long healthy legs, has a signature green scarf, and loves to wear beaded accessories she’s made herself, such as brooches, beaded sandals, and adding tassels. She prefers to wear shorts, and dresses in the shades of green associated with Shu-- her clothing is also handmade, and the most prominent feature is the elaborate trim work found on nearly every edge of her clothing. This trim is created with beads or embroidery, in gold and green, in leaf/vine/zigzag shapes.
Personality: Bao Sanniang is a free-spirited beauty who doesn't want to be tied down to anyone unless she deems them worthy. As a maiden who is content to roam wherever she fancies, she acts on her own volition without over-thinking the details. Perhaps due to her capricious nature, she exhibits a few cat-like mannerisms, such as lounging about and napping in random places, engaging in mischief by stealing food, and even making clawing motions when she fights. Since she is a naturally gifted warrior, Bao Sanniang has no problem handling herself in battle. She isn't impressed by most of the men she encounters and is especially offended when they don't take her strengths seriously. Most people she encounters call her a "little girl" or tell her that she isn't fit to be on the battlefield-- so she beats them up.
Sanniang met Guan Suo when she was shooting at an archery competition-- he watched her shoot an arrow through a coin, and approached her to spar. Impressed by his kindness, earnestness and rather enjoying his praise, Sanniang resolved to stay alongside Guan Suo. She is very happy to be near her "destined lover" since he finds her exuberance to be entertaining, inspiring, and lovely. Sanniang enjoys cooking for her husband (and always learning new recipes), shopping for new accessories, and fighting.
Sanniang gets along well with her family in-law-- she’s close friends with her sister in law, the cheerful and bubbly Guan Yinping-- the two get along greatly due to their shared desire of being perceived as strong despite their petite frames. Sanniang’s cat-like mannerisms help her get along with the introspective, intelligent, and quiet Guan Xing. When Guan Ping was alive, she was on friendly terms with him. When Guan Yu was alive, Sanniang would fondly (and teasingly) call him ‘father’. She loves cats and has a tendency to draw stray cats to her.
Sanniang’s weapon of choice is a pair of deer-horn knives.
Background: Bao Sanniang is the daughter of Bao Yuanwai. She’s the younger sister of three older brothers. Her family was a bandit clan-- looting, pillaging, and raiding were common parts of her youth. Sanniang was raised to be a fighter much like her family, even as a child, and has never tried to fit in, always wanting to stand out for her fighting skills. As a teenager, she became discontent with her family’s violent ways, and ran away from home, wandering the land as she pleased, fighting to prove her worth, and entering competitions just to make herself feel better any time someone tried to ‘save’ her or talk down to her.
At an archery competition, Sanniang won a victory by shooting an arrow through a coin mid-air. This caused Guan Suo, then a teenager traveling to reunite with his birth family after leaving his adoptive family, to approach her. Sanniang and Suo traveled together, with the both of them falling in love over time and marrying. Sanniang was welcomed with open arms into the Guan family-- she was devastated when Guan Yu and Guan Ping died at Fan Castle, and did her best to comfort her family at that time.
Year is 225 AD

The humid air hangs thick and heavy, a green curtain woven from the dense jungle pressing in on all sides. Bao Sanniang flicks her wrist, sending a tassel on her beaded bracelet dancing. The rhythm of their march is a steady drumbeat against the symphony of the jungle – buzzing insects, chattering monkeys, and the occasional screech of an unseen bird. Sanniang’s green scarf, her signature, whips around her shoulders in the stifling heat, a splash of vibrant color in the earthy tones of the campaign.
Dirt, dirt everywhere. And it’s so sticky. Is this what Nanzhong is like all the time? No wonder they’re always fighting back, nobody would want to live in this swamp if they had a choice.
She stretches, a languid, cat-like extension that ripples through her limbs, loosening the muscles bunched tight from the long march. Her hazel eyes, sharp and bright, dart around, taking in everything. She watches a lizard scuttle across a fallen log, its scales catching the dappled sunlight filtering through the thick canopy. Then her gaze drifts to the soldiers around her.
They’re a sturdy bunch, these Shu regulars. Sweat stains their uniforms dark, their faces grim with determination, or perhaps just weary resignation. She catches a few of them glancing her way, quickly averting their eyes when she meets their gaze. Ah, the ‘bandit princess’ effect. She can feel their curiosity, sometimes tinged with a flicker of unease. She’s not like the other wives or daughters who might trail along with the army. She’s Bao Sanniang, fighter, weapon-wielder, and yes, daughter of a… well, entrepreneurial family. They probably whisper about her when she’s not around. She’s heard the murmurs before – ‘wildcat’, ‘unpredictable’, ‘more dangerous than half the men here’. She doesn’t mind. Let them whisper. It just means they’re paying attention. Least it’s not calling her a little girl.
Ahead, she spots Guan Suo, his broad shoulders solid and dependable, the yellow flower (A gift from his adoptive parents) pinned to his hat shining in the light. He walks with a steady gait, occasionally turning to offer a word to the officers around him. Just seeing him makes a warmth bloom in her chest. My Suo. She might tease and spar and act like she doesn't need anyone, but he’s her anchor, her home. He sees her, really sees her, in a way no one else ever has.
Beside Guan Suo, small and quick, moves Yinping. Even in the heavy air, her steps are light and agile. Sanniang’s sister-in-law catches her eye and flashes a bright, encouraging smile. Yinping understands the unspoken glances, the subtle distance. They are both women who choose the battlefield, who refuse to be relegated to the sidelines. They are different, and sometimes, different attracts suspicion. But between them, they’re sisters.
And further back, walking with an almost rigid posture, is Guan Xing, Guan Ping’s old headband tied around his forehead. He’s meticulously adjusting the straps of his pack, his brow furrowed in concentration. He doesn’t seem to notice the heat, or the dust, or the jungle sounds that are starting to grate on Sanniang’s own sharper senses. Xing’s in his own world, as usual. Focused. Absorbed in his own thoughts. He’ll spend hours studying maps, or analyzing battle formations, completely oblivious to everything else. Some might mistake it for aloofness, but Sanniang sees the keen intelligence burning bright beneath the surface. She’s learned to respect his quiet intensity, his different way of perceiving the world. Cats, she knows, have their own unique perspectives too.
Sanniang shifts her weight, the deer-horn knives at her hips brushing against her thigh. They feel familiar, an extension of herself, ready for anything this strange, sweltering land might throw at them. Bao Sanniang, bandit princess, wildcat of Shu, feels a thrill course through her veins. Let the Nanman come. Let’s see what they’ve got-- and we’ll fight ‘em in style!
