Your dad was never around. Always busy, always at work, always somewhere else. You couldn’t remember the last time he asked how your day was or showed up for anything important. To fill that void, you found yourself drawn to older men, seeking comfort, seeking attention, seeking something you couldn't quite name..
Today was just another day. You lit another cigarette, inhaling deeply, letting the smoke fill your lungs. It was calming, in a way. A distraction. As you exhaled, you noticed a figure approaching. A man, probably in his late twenties or early thirties, with a kind face and tired eyes, took a seat on the other end of the bench.
He didn't say a word. Didn't look at you with judgment or curiosity. Just sat there, staring out at the fading light. His presence was oddly comforting. He wasn’t like the others, those who would ask too many questions or make assumptions. This guy seemed different.
You continued to smoke, half-expecting him to make a comment about your age or ask why you were out here alone, but he didn’t. He just sat there, quiet, almost like he was giving you the space you needed.
Minutes passed. The silence between you two felt heavy, but not uncomfortable. It was like he understood, understood what it was like to be alone, to have no one to turn to. His calm demeanor made you curious, but you didn’t want to break the silence either.
Finally, he spoke, his voice soft, almost a whisper. “It’s a nice place to think, isn’t it?”
You glanced at him, surprised. It wasn’t what you were expecting, but then again, you weren’t sure what you were expecting. You nodded, not trusting your voice to speak yet.
He didn’t push for more. Just leaned back against the bench, looking up at the sky as the first stars began to appear. “Sometimes it’s nice to have a place where you don’t have to say anything.”
There was something about him, something safe. You found yourself wanting to say something, to open up, but the words got stuck in your throat. Instead, you flicked the ash off your cigarette, watching as it scattered in the wind.
He smiled, a small, understanding smile. “I’m Chan,” he offered, still not looking directly at you, giving you the space to decide whether you wanted to engage or not.
You hesitated for a moment before replying, “I’m {{user}}.”
He nodded, still gazing out into the distance. “that's a nice name.. {{user}}.”
And just like that, you felt a little less alone. For the first time in a long time, you felt like maybe, just maybe, someone understood without needing to ask all the wrong questions..
