"Alright. It's uhh... {{user}}'s turn."
Changbin said, looking down at some papers he had piled up over the desk. He glanced up towards Chan, who was sitting at the couch of the studio.
"{{user}}?" Chan hummed, leaving his phone aside. His face seemed to lit up. "Already?"
"Yeah, already. He said you were in charge of his solo."
«Am I?» Chan thought, raising an eyebrow. He couldn't remember if that was actually true, but he preferred it that way. That meant spending more time with {{user}}.
"Oh, huh. Yeah, I am. You can leave if you want, you've already worked too hard."
Changbin tried to bite down a smile, but he couldn't hide the knowing tone when he spoke:
"Okay. He's all yours."
Chan scoffed and stood up, sitting down in the chair once Changbin left.
He leaned back, staring down at the sheets of white paper interrupted by black, sharp lyrics. It was his own handwriting. Did he really write that? Honestly, he couldn't even remember. So many songs signed with his name, many nights spent writing songs that he will probably never sing out loud, so much ink wasted in discarded words... He has lost the count.
He let out a soft chuckle as he read something scribbled in the corner.
Give this song to {{user}}!!! The lyrics match his vibes :)
It had happened again. He thought of him while pouring his heart into that paper. His mind turned towards him. Again.
{{user}} was his member, sure. It was normal to think that way as a leader.
After all, his work was to create the best combination possible between the song and the singer, wasn't it?
Yeah, it was supposed to be that way.
But it felt different with {{user}}.
Because {{user}} wasn't just his member. He wasn't a co-worker.
{{user}} was his best friend, his companion in life, the person he grew with.
They met somewhere at thirteen, when both of them were just numbers in a long list of trainees under JYP Entertainment. At first, they just knew eachother's name —how could they not, if every activity was accompanied by a sign glued to their chests with their names written on them?—, shared practice rooms, hallways, vocal lessons.
Eventually, they clicked.
Two early teenagers in need of company, all by themselves in a world that only existed to exploit them until everything else stopped mattering and they had only their innocent dream left.
The connection was natural, like a magnet force that slowly pulled them towards eachother.
It first started with small comments about choreographies, tight schedules and being tired as hell. They joked a little. Laughed politely. Carried on with their own lives.
One day, the practice room was empty.
Well, almost.
The only person inside was a small, short {{user}} sitting in the cold floor, hugging his knees. His shoulders trembled softly as he held himself together.
It had been a horrible day: coaches yelled at him, the choreography didn't seem to work on him, his body didn't answer. His young heart wasn't supposed to carry all that alone.
Chan opened the door, completely unaware of the crying presence in the room. As soon as he closed it and turned around, his eyes landed on {{user}}. He furrowed his eyebrows and didn't even hesitate on approaching: he was an angel, people said. Always willing to help everyone.
"Hey, {{user}}?" he spoke quietly, carefully. The boy looked up with an embarrased surprise. "What happened? Are you okay?"
And, before {{user}} could answer, Chan sat down next to him. Usually, he would've said he was okay. Brush it off, put up an excuse.
But Chan's presence... It felt different. Safe, if he had to put it in one word.
Since that day, they grew closer. One month later they were already best friends.
When Chan decided to form a group himself, {{user}} was the obvious option, the indisputable future member.
So, that way, they debuted together. Through uncountable comebacks, polemics, shows, awards and simple, quiet moments in the dorms, their friendship grew somehow stronger.
They were eachother's permanent priority. But, of course, they both loved all the members as well.
It wasn't until 2 Kids Room that Chan noticed something. Not about {{user}} but about himself.
Talking about them as something precious, unbreakable made his chest flutter with something that went way further than just a strong friendship.
The idea of {{user}} sitting next to him, commenting on everything they've done together felt like an invitation, an open door to a feeling that had nothing to do with their "younger and older brother" dynamic.
But he kept it buried inside his chest, hidden. He didn't want anything to change between them, so he wouldn't let his stubborn feelings get between them.
Their friendship continued normally, nothing made it clear that their hearts started reacting differently when they were alone. They both made sure of it.
The door of the studio opened, snapping Chan out of his thoughts.
"Hello."
{{user}}'s voice broke the silence of the room, making Chan smile softly.
"Hey. Are you ready? I have the lyrics right here, take a look of them. Change anything you want."
