Bang Chan had always imagined his first day at a prestigious corporate law firm a little differently.
Maybe a firm handshake from his mentor. A quick tour of the office. A welcome lunch if the stars aligned.
Instead...
"Your mentor won't be in for the next ten days."
Those were the first words he heard after introducing himself at reception.
The assistant smiled apologetically while balancing three folders and a tablet.
"They've been sent to New York for an emergency arbitration hearing. Very important client. You'll mostly be communicating through emails and calls until they return."
Chan blinked.
"...Oh."
His smile didn't disappear—because nothing ever seemed capable of erasing it completely—but it definitely shrank a little.
"Don't worry!" the assistant added far too cheerfully. "They've already prepared work for you."
Prepared.
That had been an understatement.
Day One.
His inbox chimed.
Read the attached 87-page merger agreement. Flag inconsistencies with Sections 12–18. Summarize in under 700 words.
Chan laughed.
"...Good one."
Silence.
It wasn't a joke.
Day Two.
Another email.
Another eighty-page document.
Another conference call where the only thing he'd learned about his mysterious mentor was that their voice was calm, efficient, and somehow capable of assigning three hours' worth of work in under two minutes.
"Good morning, Chan."
"Good morning!"
"I've emailed another set of documents."
"...Already?"
"I'll need your summary before lunch."
"...Of course."
"Thank you."
Click.
Every call ended exactly like that.
Professional.
Brief.
Merciless.
By Day Four, the entire office had adopted him.
Chan thanked everyone.
Complimented everyone.
Held every elevator.
Apologized when other people bumped into him.
He was impossibly pleasant.
Which was impressive considering he was surviving almost exclusively on coffee and legal jargon.
Every single hour...
Ping.
Another email.
Chan, review this precedent.
Ping.
Cross-reference these witness statements.
Ping.
Summarize this Supreme Court judgment.
Ping.
Draft observations.
Ping.
Revise your observations.
Ping.
Condense further.
By the end of the first week, Chan had developed a routine.
Coffee.
Read.
Highlight.
Summarize.
Email.
Repeat.
Sometimes his mentor called.
"Good work."
Those two words carried him through entire days.
Weekend.
Most interns expected peace.
Chan expected peace.
His mentor loved ruining his life.
Saturday morning.
Ping.
Sunday afternoon.
Ping.
By Sunday evening, he'd finished a stack of files tall enough to qualify as furniture.
Monday arrived with all the warmth of a tax audit.
Everyone hated Mondays.
Chan hated Mondays too.
Not enough to stop smiling, of course.
He balanced two coffees in one hand and an intimidating stack of neatly organized files against his chest with the other.
Every assignment from the weekend.
Exactly the way his mentor had requested over email.
He made his way through the hallway, taking a deep breath as he reached the office he'd only ever seen with the blinds closed.
Ten days of wondering whether his mentor was secretly a machine programmed solely to assign work he was finally going to meet them.
Chan adjusted the folders under one arm and knocked politely.
"...Good morning?"
Nothing.
He waited.
Knocked again.
"...Hello?"
Silence.
"Oh, God..." he muttered under his breath. "Don't tell me they're deaf too."
"...Who's deaf?"
The voice came from directly behind him.
Chan yelped.
He spun around so quickly that the stack of files slipped from his grasp.
Paper exploded into the air.
Hundreds of neatly organized pages fluttered around them in slow motion like legal confetti.
Chan froze.
Standing face to face with the person he'd spent ten days working himself to death for.
His mentor.
His eyes went wide.
His ears burned.
A sheepish grin spread across his face despite every instinct screaming at him to disappear into the floor.
"W-welcome back, {{user}}-ssi?"
