- #1Roots
Keys: Roots
From what’s told and implied in the Intermission, Reapers are evolved from plants, more specifically flowers, explaining why their bodies primarily consist of roots and no (known) organs or blood like humans. They have “skin” to fit in and take on a much more human-like appearance, but it can dissipate inadvertently under high enough emotional stress, primarily shown with Lloyd, showing that underneath their “skin” they are primarily black roots tangled to take on a roughly human-esque appearance, with the only discernable features being the eyes, and finger-like extensions from the hands made from the same tangled roots.
Despite this, their roots can manifest externally, such as in Chapter 2 when Mary turns her lollipop into a scythe. Another example is back in late Chapter 5, during the battle with Arthur where they extend from her palm to grab her lost lollipop. They are also seemingly strong enough to function as efficient limbs en masse, as Arthur’s are strong enough to carry him as fast as human running speed when chasing Felix in Chapter 4.
Additionally, in Chapter 6, it appears that whoever the roots belong to, even if grown outside sources, such as from within the hospital can be controlled by their original creator, as Mary was able to gag Arthur with the roots while lowering him down to ground from the hospital window.
- #2Bouquets
Keys: Bouquets, Bouquet
By their floral origin, Reapers are generally made up of a “bouquet” of four different flowers: some flowers may be associated as good or bad depending on the type, though whether these are correlated to their real life equivalents’ toxicity are unknown. Additionally, whether these flowers’ presence/absence actually affects a Reaper’s moral compass has yet to be confirmed, and so there’s the possibility this may simply be common prejudice against these flowers, and that the only toxic individual actually shown to spawn from these flowers, Mary, may be by coincidence, albeit no evidence supports this claim of coincidence.
The only known Reaper Bouquet is Marylin’s, whose consists of Belladonna, Brugmansia, Henbane, and Datura, all of which are toxic flowers.
- #3Trees
Keys: Tree, Reaper Tree
Evidenced by Mary mid-Chapter 3, Reapers can create ‘trees’ consisting primarily of their roots tangled to resemble a leafless tree, although what purpose a Tree serves for a Reaper is unexplained, although they do appear to carry apparitions of the souls that a Reaper has collected on their ‘branches’. In Mary’s case, her own Tree was presumably created from the roots of her own body, though whether it’s necessary to create a Tree this way is unknown.
Trees may grow their own flowers and leaves using their roots, presumably the Bouquet of the individual that created it by default; which can grow up many, many times larger than actual plants, as shown by Mary’s Tree left at the secret club in the Malltel. They also can seemingly grow much faster than any normal plant, as the aforementioned Malltell Tree by Mary grew to the point of partially covering the Malltell’s exterior in a matter of hours, when previously, when it was first created, it took up the center of the main club area.
Multiple Trees from the same individual can exist at once, as Mary’s two Trees in the story so far, one at the Malltell, and the other much more recently left at the park she and Felix fought Arthur in, had seemingly no issues existing at once.
Trees appear to have adverse effects on both humans and other Reapers, with the exception of the Reaper who created it, though what these effects are is unspecified and unclear.
- #4Aging (and other stuff)constant
Keys:
Reapers age physically by either Reaping or eating souls: Reaping allows slow but gradual aging, while eating souls accelerates the aging process, but at the risk of being regurgitated under certain conditions due to souls being unable to die, and thus remaining permanently ‘digesting’ in their body. Regurgitation of souls can be caused by things such as the individual’s body holding too many at once, or being forced out of them, both exemplified by Mary in Chapters 2 and 4 respectively.
Whether things such as age-related laws apply to a Reaper based on physical or chronological age is unknown. Additionally, rarely, Reapers may go through a malformed adolescent age, such as Arthur.
Reapers can regrow limbs, although they may vary and may not regrow in consistent forms and may vary in what form they might take.
According to Lloyd, Reapers may or may not be able to reproduce asexually, although this could also be an excuse for his currently single marital status.(as it’s implied that Mary’s mother was previously present but left) Depending on whether if his words are to be taken as fact, this introduces two possibilities:
Lloyd was lying to excuse his marital status, and Reapers may be unable to reproduce asexually, and sexual reproduction is mandatory.(Maybe pollination, like real world flowers? Sex makes no sense considering their biology) Lloyd was using fact to excuse his marital status, and Reapers can reproduce asexually, but also sexually if they so choose.
- #5Reaper Pupation
Keys: Reaper Pupation, Pupation
Reapers also go through a stage of pupation, turning into a cluster of roots resembling an coccoon, with features possibly hinting at their adolescent form, like with Mary. Despite this, Reapers are not completely helpless during pupation, as they appear to retain some form of consciousness and abilities, such as being able to move and manipulate the roots making up their egg. This is especially exemplified by Mary, who was able to speak coherently and even call out to Felix playfully shortly after being forced to return to pupation after the battle with Arthur. She also seemed to retain enough intelligence to wait until a daycare worker turned their back to kill them and claim their soul in Chapter 6, implying that a Reaper’s consciousness, and possibly even senses might be retained during pupation.
Despite this, a Reaper’s form may differ for each hatching, such as Mary taking on an entirely different form from her human-like body after hatching for (presumably) the second time in the daycare. They also appear to hatch with their weapon (i.e. Mary’s lollipop) already with them.
- #6Souls (semi related)
Keys: Soul, Souls
Souls in Deathsitter are depicted as color-tinted eggs: the shells and white are both tinted a specific color, and the yolk takes on the primary hue. The whites themselves are also transparent, and have long, wispy “tails”. Generally in humans, the Soul is located in a specific location in the body, whether the leg, arm, chest, head, or elsewhere. They can be extracted by Reapers, and seemingly only touched by Reapers, as the Arthur Clone reacts with “How can you hold that?” when Felix physically takes his Soul back. Souls also appear floating alongside a Reaper’s Tree as apparitions, with the shells broken and the yolk exposed. When being regurgitated by a Reaper, only the yolk and white are spat out, with the shell seemingly disappearing. The Soul itself flies away, though where they go is unknown.
Souls, depending on what is done with them, can affect the dead body of their original owner, resulting in Recomposition if left unreaped. Eating a Soul seems to be separate from Reaping one, as the owners of the Souls Mary have eaten, or rather, their corpses, Recompose. This is seemingly due to Souls simply remaining inside a Reaper’s body when eaten, left eternally “digesting” because Souls cannot be destroyed.
