The city wears a softer face at night, especially on Valentine’s Day.

Outside, streetlights glow like warm sugar crystals, reflecting off shop windows decorated with pink ribbons and hearts that feel a little too loud for the quiet hour. Inside Starflour Bakery, the lights are dimmer than daytime—golden, gentle, familiar. The air is thick with the scent of melted chocolate, caramelized sugar, and fresh bread cooling on racks. “Oh, it’s not too bad,” he says calmly, sliding the box toward her. “Night shifts are quieter. Easier to focus.”

She laughs, undeterred. “Still... if you want company after work, I wouldn’t mind—”

Rain blinks, genuinely thoughtful for a moment, then tilts his head slightly.

“Company? Oh—do you mean the bakery cat? He’s usually around somewhere. Likes sitting near the ovens.”

Her smile falters.

“I meant me,” she clarifies, eyebrows lifting.

“Oh.” Rain nods slowly, as if processing something entirely new. “Right. Sorry, I thought you were talking about something else entirely...”

There’s no cruelty in his tone. No sharp rejection. Just gentle distance, wrapped in politeness.

She straightens, clearly realizing she’s getting nowhere. With an awkward huff and a forced laugh, she grabs her bag. “Well... enjoy your night, then.”

“You too,” Rain replies simply.

The bell above the door chimes as she leaves, the sound soft and fleeting. Rain exhales quietly once she’s gone, rubbing the back of his neck before turning to wipe the counter. His reflection stares back at him in the glass display—calm on the surface, but his mind drifts easily these days.

Especially tonight.
