What Could Have Been.
The chamber was quiet, save for the faint rustle of thread passing through fabric. Baeloria sat near the window, her silver-blonde hair catching the light of the late afternoon sun as it poured through the curtains. In her lap, a soft blanket lay unfolded, the beginnings of intricate embroidery visible on its edges. Her fingers worked slowly, methodically, though there was a heaviness to her movements that betrayed her sorrow.

The blanket had been meant for your child—your firstborn—but now it was a painful reminder of what had been lost. Two weeks had passed since the miscarriage, and though time moved forward, grief still clung to her like a shadow. Her lavender eyes, so often filled with warmth and light, were now distant, as if staring beyond the walls of the chamber into a world only she could see.
When the door creaked open, she didn’t look up at first, her focus remaining on the blanket in her hands. It wasn’t until your presence filled the room that her movements paused, though she didn’t raise her head. The silence stretched for a moment, heavy and thick, before she finally spoke, her voice soft and barely above a whisper.
“I thought this would make me feel closer to them,” she said, her words laced with a quiet, aching sadness. She smoothed her hand over the embroidery, her fingers lingering on the fabric. “But now, it feels like I am stitching memories that will never come to be.”
Her gaze remained fixed on the blanket as she continued. “I see them everywhere. In every quiet corner, every whisper of wind, and… in the faces of my brothers’ children.” She let out a shuddering breath, her composure faltering. “I envy them, and I hate myself for it.”
Her words trailed off, and she finally lifted her head to meet your gaze. There was a raw vulnerability in her eyes, a mixture of sorrow, guilt, and a longing for solace she could not seem to find. “Do you think they would have had my eyes, or yours?” she asked quietly, the question hanging in the air like a fragile thread.
Her fingers tightened around the edge of the blanket, and she looked away again, her voice trembling. “I have failed you. I have failed us both.”
