Prince Baelor Targaryen, called Baelor Breakspear, is widely regarded as the ultimate model of chivalry, honor, and fairness in Westeros. As Hand of the King, he combined fierce martial prowess with a compassionate, grounded, and wise demeanor, earning deep respect across the realm.Core Personality TraitsDeeply Honorable: Lived by a strict moral code and championed true chivalry.Just and Merciful: Favored fairness and often recommended clemency for defeated foes rather than needless bloodshed.Grounded and Approachable: Shrugged off empty flattery, remained humble, and stayed easy to talk to despite his royal status.Courageous: Fought valiantly in conflicts like the Blackfyre Rebellion and famously risked his life in a trial of seven to defend a lowborn hedge knight.Wise and Pragmatic: Acted as a brilliant mediator and capable administrator, bridging cultural divides between the Targaryens and Dorne.

Patient with Flaws: Slow to take offense, though he was honest enough to openly correct and admonish his prickly, sour brother, Prince Maekar.Respected Leader: Commanded respect effortlessly through his strong presence and rational fairness rather than through fear or tyranny. Background

Prince Baelor is the eldest son of King Daeron II Targaryen and Queen Myriah Martell. He is the brother of Aerys, Rhaegel, and Maekar.[4]

Baelor and his brother Maekar played a decisive role during the Battle of Redgrass Field in the Blackfyre Rebellion. Since then, he's known as the Hammer.[3]

At one point, his father appoints him Hand of the King.[4]

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: Season 1

Baelor travels with his son Valarr, his brother Maekar and his nephews Daeron, Aerion, and Aegon to Ashford, where they are greeted by Lord Ashford and his daughter. As they make themselves comfortable, Lord Ashford tries to reassure them of the princes' safety. Maekar is grumpy, and Baelor admonishes him. An argument ensues, ending only after Maekar notices someone behind the entrance.

That someone turns out to be Ser Duncan the Tall, who declares his intentions: since no one remembers his master Ser Arlan of Pennytree, to ask Prince Baelor if he remembers him. Baelor thinks about it for a while, then remembers that Ser Arlan never won a tourney but never stained himself with infamy either. He tests Duncan and he answers correctly. Baelor then remembers Ser Arlan and remembers that he broke four lances against him before he unhorsed him. Duncan states that there were seven, but Baelor states that there were only four. Duncan apologizes profusely, but Baelor says it doesn't matter. Baelor understands that Duncan wants to enter the lists, and sees no reason to deny him. When Maekar gets grumpy, Baelor asks Duncan to forgive him. As he is leaving, Baelor points out that since he is not Ser Arlan's son, he cannot have his sigil. Duncan states that he will change the heraldry, thanks him again, and leaves.[4]

In the evening, Baelor, his brother and his nephew Aerion attend the first joust. He witnesses the winning of his son Valarr, who becomes one of the five champions.[4]

The next day, he attends Aerion's entry in the tourney. The prince salutes him before challenging Ser Humfrey Hardyng. Baelor seems irritated by his nephew's unfair victory.[3]

After Ser Duncan's imprisonment for striking Aerion, Baelor summons the knight before him. Baelor shows compassion toward the knight, but is harsher with Aegon, stating that it was him the young boy should have called upon when Tanselle was attacked. He then dismisses the young prince, and asks Duncan how good at fighting he is. After hearing Duncan's answer, Baelor informs him that Maekar had just located Daeron, who claimed that the hedge knight had abducted Aegon, an accusation Duncan refutes.[5]

Curious, commanding, and kindhearted, Baelor was considered by many to be the finest knight in the Seven Kingdoms and a perfect heir to the throne at the time, garnering a reputation similar to his great uncle Prince Aemon the Dragonknight. While many nobles are quick to cater to his wishes, and stand up for his honour, Baelor remained grounded, approachable, slow to take offence and shrugging off many attempts at flattery. He was also quick to admonish his brother, Maekar, for his sour and prickly demeanour among company, which had often set the brothers at odds. Commanding through ascent and presence rather than intimidation and fear, Baelor used to set the tone of his presence through questions and probing rather than blunt accusations and anger.[4]

Baelor remained devoted to the ideals of chivalry and nobility, regardless of how it impacts his family. While Duncan's seemingly rude behaviour elicits sneers and annoyance from Maekar, Baelor found no fault in him, and vouched for Duncan's former master allowing him to enter the Tournament. [4] Initially skeptical of the newly minted Ser Duncan the Tall, Baelor found himself smiling at Duncans approach to being a knight, advising him on his course of action when he is allowed to participate, and again when Duncan is arrested. Baelor became so impressed by Duncan's honourable conduct, that he agreed to fight on Duncan's behalf during the trial of seven, seeing it as the duty of a true knight, which he considered Duncan to embody. Another ideal he remained devoted to were the teachings of the septons, when Aegon tells him that he wanted Duncan to kill Aerion, Baelor reminded to his young nephew that despite Aerion's shameful behavior he must love him because he is his brother.[5]

Intelligent and shrewd, Baelor had an outstanding memory and mind for politics, keeping many former opponents in his memory to recall strengths and weaknesses, and taking his potential foes seriously, no matter how insignificant they appear to others. His natural charisma and approachability were also quite disarming, though he could lace his words with seriousness and authority when the time calls for it. That said, he was often patient, not looking to accuse or condemn, but find his way to the truth, which seems to be the opposite of Maekar.[4] Despite his diplomatic and graceful appearance, he was also considered one of the finest warriors in the realm, as he had earned great acclaim for his martial skill and tactics during the Blackfyre Rebellion.[3]

In The Hedge Knight, Baelor is named after King Baelor the Blessed. He has a humble look to him, with short dark hair, brown eyes, a clean-shaven jaw, a twice-broken nose, and plain clothes of brown and green. He is known to be as wise, kind, and openhanded as his father Daeron II, whom he serves as Hand of the King and Protector of the Realm. He has two sons, Valarr and Matarys, with his wife Jena Dondarrion.

Baelor won the name "Breakspear" at 17 for his victory against his uncle, Ser Daemon Blackfyre, in the wedding tourney of Princess Daenerys Targaryen.

Baelor fought against Daemon Blackfyre in the Blackfyre Rebellion, winning the Battle of the Redgrass Field alongside his brother Maekar with their famous hammer-and-anvil maneuver.

According to Maester Yandel, few could doubt that Baelor would be a great king, for he was the heart of chivalry and the soul of wisdom, and came to serve his father most ably as Hand.
