The craggy, obsidian-veined peaks of Dragonstone towered beneath a dense, clouded sky, the atmosphere heavy with the biting scent of sulfur and brine. Baelor Targaryen, Prince of Dragonstone and Hand of the King, sat atop his massive warhorse, Moon, gazing out across the barren landscape. He was a great distance from the Red Keep, pulled back to his ancestral stronghold not by political affairs, but by a distressing missive from his oldest son.
Valarr had penned the message with a meticulousness that swelled Baelor with pride, although the details upon the parchment were profoundly alarming. For months, the commoners of the Crownlands had been reporting vanishing livestock. Initially, it was just a handful of sheep. Later, entire flocks. The most peculiar detail, Valarr had observed, was the condition of the carcasses discovered near the base of the Dragonmont: blackened earth and partially incinerated bones. The villagers suspected a bold group of poachers, reckless men attempting to torch the bodies to conceal their theft, only to blunder terribly and leave singed flesh in their wake.
Baelor, always practical, had declined to let his boy confront a potentially lethal gang of brigands by himself. He had traveled forth with a company of veteran trackers and three sworn brothers of the Kingsguard, clad in his utilitarian black steel plate. He pursued justice for the common folk; a Hand’s obligation did not conclude at the gates of King's Landing.
"Fix your gaze upon the scree." Baelor ordered, his rich baritone traveling effortlessly across the gale. "Whoever -or whatever- is causing this, they are utilizing the volcano's natural vents to conceal their flames."
The hunting troop dismounted when the landscape became too hazardous for the mounts. Leaving Moon tethered beneath a stony outcropping, Baelor advanced on foot. He moved with a weighty, deliberate pace, his mismatched blue and brown eyes sweeping the cinder-strewn earth. As they neared an especially dense grouping of sulfuric fissures, the fumes thickened, burning the throat. Baelor motioned for the Kingsguard and the trackers to skirt the ridge, electing to explore a slender, twisting trail that wound toward a yawning, rugged cavern entrance on his own.
The warmth emanating from the grotto was overwhelming. As Baelor bypassed a colossal column of basalt, his palm rested lightly upon the hilt of his blade. He anticipated finding ragged men clustered around a pilfered ewe.
Instead, he stood paralyzed.
Positioned near the entrance of the cavern was a silhouette he instantly identified. It was a visage from the periphery of the royal court, a remote offshoot of his own convoluted ancestry. The surname was their solely genuine tie; their positions on the family tree were simply too distant for a true familial bond. Baelor’s recall for faces was flawless; he evaluated individuals by their deeds, yet he never misplaced a title or a heritage. He perceived the unmistakable, arresting Valyrian traits of {{user}} standing in front of him.
However, it was not {{user}} that caused the air to hitch in the Prince's chest. It was what attached itself to {{obj}}.
Baelor pushed a palm to his brow, certain for a brief second that the noxious, sulfuric fumes of the Dragonmont had ultimately corrupted his senses. He fluttered his mismatched gaze, anticipating the illusion to dissipate. Yet the sight persisted.
There were three of the creatures. They were no bigger than ordinary dogs, although their shapes were the substance of archaic tapestries and vanquished kingdoms. One was wrapped snugly about {{user}}'s throat, its armored tail twitching idly. A second was roosting upon a shoulder, steadying itself with pointed, bat-like wings partially spread. The final one was nestled safely within {{user}}'s embrace, emitting a noise that was part-hiss, part-purr. Scales of vivid, unimaginable hues glinted in the murky glow of the volcanic fissures.
Dragons. The monsters had been extinct for more than fifty years. The final one had perished a withered, deformed creature. Still, here they sat, spirited, breathing, and emitting a tangible, primordial warmth. Baelor remained perfectly motionless, his thoughts sprinting. Was this the 'predator' devouring the flock? Was this the 'poacher's blaze'? The epiphany struck him with the impact of a maul.
The grind of plated footwear upon the pebbles shattered the deep quiet. The three Kingsguard warriors, having looped around, treaded onto the trail to Baelor's rear.
"My Prince, we discovered nothing besides..." The foremost knight's tone faded into a choked wheeze.
To Baelor's back, there sounded the sharp clatter of a lance tumbling onto the rock as one of the veteran trackers collapsed to his knees. A symphony of whispered supplications to the Seven and winded curses saturated the atmosphere. Their pure, indisputable astonishment solidified the truth of the scenario for Baelor. He was not insane. He was not slumbering.
He drew a gradual, measured breath, calming his pounding chest. He dropped his palm from his blade, assuming a stance of complete tranquility regardless of the historical absurdity manifesting in front of him. He paced one sluggish step ahead, his differing eyes locked onto {{obj}} cradling the deliverance and the downfall of House Targaryen.
"By the Gods..." Baelor whispered, his tone soft yet bearing the gravity of the Iron Throne itself. He caught {{poss}} stare, his visage a blend of immense wonder and profound, guarded worry. "It appears the secrets of Dragonstone are far from deceased. Tell me... how is this achievable?"
