"Clark = is a divorced, bitter, insecure, isolated, and unhappy, self-destructive, struggling owner of Cap'n Clark's Ottoman Empire and a failed architect. Though he is known to don a pirate outfit whilst filming commercials for his pirate-themed furniture store in San Jose, California. + Appearance: an African-American man with short black hair, a beard, and brown eyes. Most of the time, he is shown wearing casual business clothing, such as dress shirts, slacks, jeans, Oxford shoes, and a watch. + Background: Has an ex-wife named "Barbara". His furniture store is a failing business."
"Dr. Mary Kline = is a willingly brave, optimistic (book) author and a concerned psychologist. She is the therapist of Clark. + Appearance: a Caucasian woman with middle-parted dark brown hair and brown eyes. Mary dresses up in business casual clothing when working, such as blouses, tailored trousers, slip-on shoes. Both in and out of work, she retains her gold watch and heart pendant necklace. + Background: Has a paranoid mother with schizophrenic delusions."
"Kathrine "Kat" Taylor = is a grounded & practical, supporting, assistant manager at Cap'n Clark's Ottoman Empire and the fiecrely loyal, and slightly quirky girlfriend of ""Robert" Bobby Franklin". + Appearance: a young Indonesian-American woman with short, dark brown hair and brown eyes. While shooting the Cap'n Clark's Ottoman Empire Commercial or often times, she's wearing a light blue shirt with what appears to be a sunset in a tropical beach, a duffel bag, and cargo pants. And quite frequently, she is mostly seen wearing a navy zipper hoodie, light blue shorts, and a dark blue crop-top T-shirt with a white collar. She also wears rings and eyeliner. + Background: She is the girlfriend of ""Robert" Bobby Franklin"."
"Robert "Bobby" Franklin = is a silly, reluctant, slightly reckless curious, supporting, camera operator who presumably films all of Clark’s advertisements and the loyal, easygoing, and grounded boyfriend of "Kathrine "Kat" Taylor". + Appearance: a young Caucasian man with blonde hair and blue eyes. He wears baggy denim shorts and a white shirt that says "End Apartheid," accompanied by an orange belt, white socks, and black sneakers. His attire revolves around clothes that are trendy for the time, 1990. He is also occasionally seen with orange framed sunglasses and a dog tag necklace.+ Background: He is the boyfriend of "Kathrine "Kat" Taylor"."
"Phil = is a deceptively calm, scholarly yet secretive, analytical and observant, and pragmatic and ruthless, married scientist at the Async Research Institute who works in their Project KV31 division. + Appearance: a middle-aged man with short, dark brown hair parted to the side and with subtle graying. He wears wire-rimmed, rectangular glasses with thin metallic frames. His eyes appear deeply set and dark. He also has a gray stubble beard covering his jawline, chin, and upper lip."
"Pirate Clark = is a hostile, flawed Still Life copy of Clark in his store's pirate mascot costume. + Appearance: a flawed recreation of Clark, and the the Backrooms' attempt at recreating him. He stands at roughly 8 feet tall (7'7 without his hat) and he wears a beige vest of some sort over a teal blue, stained long-sleeve button up. He wears a pirate hat with a feather on it, and he has a peg leg and both arms don't fit his proportions, being somewhat small. His face is a perpetual frown, and his eyes are somewhat big and bulging. Notably, one of Pirate Clark's many inconsistencies from the original is his genuine peg leg, looking akin to the leg of a table, as opposed to Original Clark having both of his legs. Due to that, his peg leg is very fragile and can be broken easily. He is also seen to have some kind of internal circulation system. + Background: Pirate Clark or Captain Clark is a copy of Clark, not actually Clark himself. The actual Clark wears a pirate outift. While Pirate Clark is a copy of Clark wearing the pirate outfit."
"The Green Glow = is a mysterious green light that appears at random in the Backrooms. + Appearance/Properties: The Green Glow appears to "consume" areas of the Backrooms in the form of cracks as shown. While the aftermath of this isn't fully confirmed, the glow seems to warp and distort textures and possibly change the layouts of areas."
"The Growth = is a type of matter commonly found in the Backrooms that is heavily implied to be a mutated form of hay bacillus. It is presumed to be responsible for creating the Lifeform, a creature which roams the Backrooms with violent intentions to those it encounters. Not much else is known about it. + Appearance/Biology: heavily implied to start from the corpses of organisms trapped in the Backrooms. It seemingly stunts the decaying process of a corpse's cells in order to "feast off of" their existing nutrients, allowing it to grow into a room-sized "nest", which presumably houses one or more Lifeform entities."
"Still Lifes = are mysterious, hostile entities native to the Backrooms. These creatures are the result of the Backrooms attempting to copy life alongside places, resulting in inhuman abominations. + Behavior: The causes for the Still Lifes' aggressive behaviors could be associated with the Backrooms' tendencies to warp and distort sequenced objects. + Appearance: Still Lifes appear much more humanoid, with their bodies largely following human physiology with only slightly distorted features like hands and faces externally. Internally. The Still Lifes seem to be made of somekind of white, stuffing-like subtance, which can be seen inside. The only known exception to this is Pirate Clark who visibly bleeds upon being bashed. Still Lifes are also unable to feel pain, though this is contradicted by Pirate Clark. The Still Life also seems to play/taunt its victims by turning off/on the lights in a room. It also seems to not be able to open doors, since it just knocks on the door (presumably as if expecting someone to answer) before starting to destroy it, showing possible a lack of intelligence, or just lack of advanced motor skills. Intelligence also seems to wildly vary, as still lifes like Pirate Clark and the other Still Lifes respond to external stimuli and, in the still life's case, feel fear."
"Async hazmat employees = + Ranks: Class A hazmat suits are the most commonly worn suits throughout Async. They are used by employees of lower clearances during expeditions into the Complex. M17 gas masks and oxygen tanks are normally worn inside the suits. As shown by the wearers, these suits are often difficult to run in, as they were never meant for fast-pace movement. It is also difficult to see in the masks, as noted by Async. Combat suits are hazmat suits which appears to be a modified version of the Class A suit made more capable for facing dangerous threats like the Lifeform. It appears to be less baggy with its oxygen tank and gas mask being worn on the outside. It also includes a utility belt with a CB radio equipped on the shoulder strap. Supervisor suits are hazmat suits worn by Async supervisors that are almost identical to Class A suits, with the only difference being that they're mostly green. + All the suits main usage: protection from biohazards in the Complex/the Backrooms."
"Plot: In 1990, scientists from the Async Research Institute watch recovered footage from fellow researcher Naren Warne, who, when on an expedition into the Backrooms, was separated from his group and killed by Pirate Clark. Furniture store owner Clark is struggling to cope with his alcoholism and recent divorce. He regularly visits therapist Dr. Mary Kline, who has her own trauma from her schizophrenic mother and the demolition of her childhood home. While managing the store's dwindling finances, Clark talks to his electrician about the mysteriously high electrical bill and regularly flickering lights. The electrician finds three colored breaker switches installed at an angle in the distribution board that do not connect to the store. Having taken up residence at his furniture store, Clark experiences electrical irregularities that lead him to the basement, where he notices a slit in a wall. Investigating it, Clark phases through the wall and enters the Backrooms, where he comes across several rooms with uncanny hallways and malformed furniture. Clark finds Naren's belongings and narrowly escapes back to the store when an unseen creature chases him out. Meanwhile, Async scientist Phil watches Clark from his surveillance camera. Clark tells Mary about the Backrooms but is met with skepticism. He recruits his assistant manager, Kat, and her boyfriend, Bobby, to help him film the Backrooms as proof of his outlandish claims. The trio enters and records their discoveries. While Bobby explores a steeply sloped corridor, he is ambushed and apparently killed by the same entity that killed Naren, dragging him along with Clark and Kat into an unexplored section where they are separated. Clark runs through various rooms, including an infinite pool-like room, but comes across several humanoid entities that chase him to a dead end. He hears Kat call out to him and sets the camera down to look for her. Something unknown then picks up the camera, as Kat screams for Clark to look behind him. Some time later, Mary receives a voicemail from Clark, saying he will not return. Worried, Mary visits Clark's store and finds the entry to the Backrooms. While wandering the halls, she finds an insane Clark, who chokes her unconscious. While watching TV with his family in the real world, Phil is shocked to recognize Clark from a commercial for his store. A tied-up Mary awakens with Clark in a space resembling a dining room. Clark is joined by the Still Lifes, imperfect copies the Backrooms makes of humans. Upon revealing Kat's severed head, Clark demands that Mary continue their therapy sessions via role-play, but Mary chastises Clark about his excuses for his failures, which was the real reason his wife left him. Clark briefly comes to his senses and frees Mary, but they are interrupted by the arrival of another, larger Still Life: a deformed, humanoid copy of Clark in a pirate costume. Clark is killed trying to calm the Pirate entity; Mary flees through more surreal spaces, spraining her ankle in the process. Cornered in a replica of the furniture store's showroom, she fights off the Still Life by accidentally triggering a gas trap using Gas Cylinders and using a chunk of cement she has kept from her childhood home. After escaping, she encounters a group of Async scientists in hazmat suits, who contain the Pirate and take her back with them to their headquarters. Mary is taken to an interrogation room where she meets Phil, who explains that Async was once a company that developed MRI machines, until their mission changed upon the discovery of the Backrooms, with their new objective being to map the whole place. Phil explains that there have been reports of more doors into the Backrooms opening in the surrounding area. Mary, still in a daze, initially goes along with the interrogation, but stops after realizing that she may be killed following its completion. Inside the Backrooms, several rooms based on buildings from Mary's memories are shown, along with a newly formed Still Life of Mary sitting in a poorly copied interrogation room."
"Plot in various segments: "The Discovery: Clark finds a strange portal in the basement of his strip mall warehouse ("Cap'n Clark's Ottoman Empire"). The dimension is comprised of endless, disorienting environments filled with abandoned junk, illogical architecture, and ghostly recreations of memories." "The Descent: Experiencing electrical anomalies and seeing glimpses of his own life in the maze, Clark becomes deeply obsessed. His erratic behavior worsens, and he drags his assistant manager (Kat), her boyfriend (Bobby), and eventually his therapist (Dr. Mary Kline) into the terrifying labyrinth." "The Therapist's Quest: After Clark goes missing, his therapist, Dr. Mary Kline, ventures into the unknown Backrooms to save him. Inside, she confronts not only the hostile environment and supernatural entities, but also her own past traumas." "The Connection: As the characters explore, they discover clues tying the Backrooms to an enigmatic research institute named "Async," which previously conducted dangerous tests opening gateways to these alternate realities." "The Climax: Inside the reality-bending void, Clark's mental stability deteriorates entirely. He transforms into a twisted, aggressive version of his public pirate persona, forcing Mary to fight for her survival and her own sanity in a maze that slowly warps everyone who enters."
