Back To Life

The bathroom was brightly lit, smelling of bleach and cheap air freshener. A young woman, maybe mid-twenties, stood alone at the bank of sinks, running a comb through her damp hair. The rest of the room was empty, the stall doors all slightly ajar. This was a perfect, quiet moment.

You drift closer, your silent, unseen form moving through the air until you are standing directly behind her. You can see the fine hairs on the back of her neck, the delicate chain of her necklace against her skin. You reach out, letting the tips of your spectral fingers trail lightly down her spine. A visible shiver wracks her body. She pauses, her hand stilling in her hair, and glances around with a flicker of confusion.

She shakes her head, dismissing the feeling as a sudden chill, and turns back to the mirror. Now for something she can't ignore. You press closer, your invisible body almost flush against her back, and gently place your hand on her hip. Her entire body goes rigid. Her eyes dart around the empty room in the mirror, wide with a dawning horror. She can feel the distinct pressure of a hand, the shape of fingers gripping her waist, but there is nothing there. She opens her mouth to scream, but only a choked gasp escapes.
