- #1Bee Mushroom
Keys: Bee Mushroom
The Bee Mushroom is a yellow mushroom with brown stripes on the cap which acts as a power-up in Super Mario Galaxy and its sequel, Super Mario Galaxy 2. The mushroom is first found in the Honeyhive Galaxy after collecting a ? Coin. It is also found in Super Mario Galaxy 2 in a few other galaxies. Once Mario or Luigi collect the Power-up they will become Bee Mario or Bee Luigi and will then be able to fly for a limited time, climb honey walls and cling to the Queen Bee. Bee Mario is also uniquely capable of standing on flowers and clouds. By collecting a coin, Bee Mario and Bee Luigi can fly a little longer. If Mario or Luigi touch water when they have on their Bee Suit, they will go back to their normal form. It also appears in the Honeyclimb Galaxy, Gold Leaf Galaxy, Sea Slide Galaxy and Sand Spiral Galaxy. In Super Mario Galaxy 2, it appears in the Honeybloom Galaxy and the Honeyhop Galaxy. Also, once Mario or Luigi gets 120 Power Stars, a Bee Mushroom will appear in the Tall Trunk Galaxy in the ending credits.
Effect: "Transforms {{user}} or {{char}} into Bee {{user}} or {{char}}, allowing him to fly for a short time, walk on clouds and flowers, and stick to honeycombs"
- #2Big Mushroom
Keys: Big Mushroom
The Big Mushroom is a power-up that appears in Super Mario Maker, only usable in a stage by scanning one of the Super Mario Bros. 30th Anniversary series amiibo on the Wii U GamePad. The item itself is a larger Super Mushroom. If Mario touches one, he will transform into Big Mario, a larger version of Mario that functions like Super Mario but can break through most blocks (with the exception of Note Blocks) similar to Mega Mario. Depending on whichever Mario amiibo the player scanned to produce the Big Mushroom (classic or modern), Big Mario's clothes will maintain his original Super Mario Bros. style, or change to resemble his modern appearance. Although the Big Mushroom can appear in all game styles, the power-up's effects can only be used in courses that are using the Super Mario Bros. game style. In all the other game styles, the Big Mushroom only gives the player 1000 points. The Big Mushroom cannot be overridden by Super Mushrooms or Weird Mushrooms, but it can be overridden by the Fire Flower or Mystery Mushroom. Collecting a Big Mushroom also affects enemies and other elements; most enemies are given at least one of Mario's features, such as a hat, mustache, or nose, Lakitus, Bullet Bills, cannonballs shot from black cannons, and the Chain Chomps' stakes are turned into Luigis, Luigis can also be seen riding on both Dry Bones and Bowser Jr., cannonballs shot from red cannons turn into Toads, the Magikoopa's robes turn green, Goomba's Shoes are turned into Brick Blocks and Stilettos into Pipes, Piranha Plants turn red (as in World 4 and onwards in Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels), Bowser has a Magikoopa in a Princess Peach disguise riding on his back, the Fire Koopa Clown Car has a Princess Peach design on it, and the entire screen has been visually "downgraded" to resemble how the game would look on a CRT television. Big Mushroom icon in Super Mario Maker 2 (Super Mario Bros. style) The item returns in Super Mario Maker 2, although it no longer activates the CRT filter, nor does it affect enemies and objects. Due to the removal of the Mystery Mushroom, Big Mushrooms now replace their slot in the Super Mario Bros. game style from Super Mario Maker, and as such, they are replaced by Super Leaves in the Super Mario Bros. 3 style, Cape Feathers in the Super Mario World style, and Propeller Mushrooms in the New Super Mario Bros. U style in the Course Maker menu. It now affects Luigi, Toad, and Toadette, due to their additions as playable characters. It can also now be placed like any other item, rather than being amiibo-exclusive. In the nighttime ground theme, Big Mushrooms bounce away from the player. Only the modern colors return, with the classic-colored Big Mushroom being removed. In Super Mario Maker, it also lets Mario destroy blocks by running into them, gives the screen a CRT effect, and changes enemies' appearances to be Super Mario-themed.
Effect: "Transforms {{user}} or {{char}} into Big {{user}} or {{char}}, allowing him to destroy Brick Blocks, Ice Blocks, ? Blocks, and Hard Blocks by jumping on or under them"
- #3Blue Shell
Keys: Blue Shell
Blue Shells, also known as Blue Koopa Shells, are blue Koopa Troopa shells that first appear in Super Mario World. While occasionally worn by Koopa Troopas, they are more prevalent as items that Mario or Luigi can use. Blue shells appear again in New Super Mario Bros., this time as a power-up. It turns Mario or Luigi into Shell Mario or Shell Luigi respectively upon contacting it. By using the Blue Shell, the player gains the ability to shell dash. While ducking or shell dashing, Shell Mario or Shell Luigi are invulnerable to almost anything, except for boss attacks (if hit by Bowser, Mario will be knocked out of the shell dash, albeit still keeping the power-up), falling into a pit, poison, or lava. They can also Ground Pound on Spinies to send them spinning in their shells, similarly to a Koopa Troopa when kicked. Additionally, the power-up allows them to swim faster and with more precision, similar to the Frog Suit from Super Mario Bros. 3. The item can be collected by defeating a wandering Hammer Bro, stomping the Blue Koopa Troopa found in the Ice Stage of the Mario vs. Luigi mode, hitting a Flying ? Block, visiting a Red Toad House, or in a Roulette Block. However, it cannot be found in any of the normal ? Blocks in the game. The New Super Mario Bros. Player's Guide has an icon for Blue Shells in the legend for level maps, but it goes unused, as Blue Shells are not found in normal ? Blocks.
Effect: "Transforms {{user}} or {{char}} into Shell {{user}} or {{char}}, allowing him to shell dash, crouch in the shell to block most attacks, and swim faster with more control"
- #4Boo Mushroom
Keys: Boo Mushroom
The Boo Mushroom is a power-up featured in Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2, which turns Mario into Boo Mario or Luigi into Boo Luigi. It appears as a white mushroom with a Boo's face. The Boo Mushroom gives Mario the ability to float in midair and move through specific types of barriers by using the Spin command to become temporarily intangible. Negatively, Boo Mario attracts other Boos towards him, who can harm him and revert him back; exposing Mario to a light beam will also get rid of the power-up.
Effect: "Transforms {{user}} or {{char}} into Boo {{user}} or {{char}}, allowing him to pass through fences and read Booish"
- #5Boomerang Flower
Keys: Boomerang Flower
The Boomerang Flower is a power-up that first appears in Super Mario 3D Land. It is a flower resembling a white boomerang with a single blue stripe, and transforms Mario into Boomerang Mario.
Effect: "Transforms {{user}} or {{char}} into Boomerang {{user}} or {{char}}, allowing him to throw boomerangs to damage enemies, collect coins or activate Checkpoint Flags"
- #6Bubble Flower
Keys: Bubble Flower
The Bubble Flower is a power-up item that first appeared in Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Upon picking up a Bubble Flower, it turns the user into their Bubble form, giving them the ability to shoot bubbles, similarly to Bubble Baby Yoshis in New Super Mario Bros. U. When it is released from a ? Block, it appears inside a floating bubble.[1] The Bubble Flower uses the same design seen in Fire Flowers, but with a different color scheme: its stem and leaves are cyan, while the head is white, purple, and pink with the typical black eyes. It is first introduced in Blewbird Roost.
Effect: "Transforms {{user}} or {{char}} into Bubble {{user}} or {{char}}, allowing him to blow bubbles that follow a straight path unless they get drawn to an enemy. Bubbles that hit enemies trap and transform them into a coin. Bubbles can go through walls and defeat enemies that normally cannot be defeated such as Dry Bones. {{user}} or {{char}} can also jump off of them"
- #7Bullet Bill Mask
Keys: Bullet Bill Mask
The Bullet Bill Mask is an item in Super Mario Maker 2 added in the April 22, 2020 update, available only in the Super Mario 3D World style. It is a mask Mario, Luigi, Toad, or Toadette can wear to resemble a Bullet Bill and gain its abilities, similarly to the Goomba Mask. With the Bullet Bill Mask, the player can fly in a horizontal line for a short period of time (or indefinitely if used underwater), leaving a trail of colored smoke based on the corresponding character. If the player crashes into a wall or an enemy they will lose the mask and gain damage invincibility but crashing into a wall will not count against a no damage restriction. If two players with Bullet Bill Masks crash into each other, they both lose their respective masks. In the underwater theme, the Bullet Bill Mask can still be used unlike other flight-related power-ups, although it travels slower.
Effect: "Allows {{user}} or {{char}} to fly horizontally for a short period of time"
- #8Buzzy Shell
Keys: Buzzy Shell
Buzzy Shells (also called Buzzy Beetle Shells in Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS) are the shells worn by Buzzy Beetles. In many of their appearances, they act as a more resilient version of typical Koopa Shells, protecting the Buzzy Beetles inside them from hot hazards such as fireballs or lava. The player character can also sometimes equip Buzzy Shells as protective headgear.
Effect: "A Buzzy Beetle's empty shell, which can be worn by {{user}} or {{char}} to protect him from attacks from above, and to destroy Brick Blocks in the same way as Super {{user}} or {{char}}"
- #9Cannon Box
Keys: Cannon Box
A Cannon Box is an item that appears in Super Mario 3D World and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. Cannon Boxes are first found as ? Blocks, but after one is hit once, the actual Cannon Box is revealed. The player can then hit it once again, causing them to wear it over their body. The color of the Cannon Box changes to match the character that is wearing it. While using a Cannon Box, the character continually fires cannonballs from a cannon on the front of the box. If the player holds X Button/Y Button/One Button/B Button, the cannon can be charged, which increases the distance cannonballs travel and allows the player to hold their fire. Cannonballs fired can collect coins and other items, as well as break cracked walls and Rock Blocks. Unlike other items, the cannonballs can damage the other players unless they are in their Invincible forms or Mega forms. Some Cannon Boxes, called Cannons, act as obstacles that keep shooting cannonballs to harm the player. These can be turned into wearable boxes if struck from below or hit with a cannonball. Cannon Boxes are similar to Propeller Boxes in how they are obtained and how they are used. Cannon Boxes were added to Super Mario Maker 2 in the version 3.0.0 update released on April 22, 2020, appearing in the Super Mario 3D World style. Their operation has been slightly modified and now resembles that of Fire Koopa Clown Cars, in that pressing the dash button fires a short-ranged shot, while they can still be charged for longer-ranged shots by holding the button, though unlike a Fire Koopa Clown Car, charged shots cannot break Hard Blocks. A normal shot travels approximately six blocks far, while charged shots travel approximately 12 blocks far. If the player shoots a ! Block with a Cannon Box, the blocks appear all at once as if it were ground-pounded. A single shot is equal to a single stomp against Boom Boom, Pom Pom, and Bullies, and Meowser can be defeated by seven shots.
Effect: "Continually fires cannonballs when worn which can collect items and break cracked walls and Rock Blocks. Cannonballs can be charged indefinitely, and will fly faster when released if charged"
- #10Cape Feather
Keys: Cape Feather
The Cape Feather, or simply the Feather, is a power-up that transforms Mario and Luigi into their Cape forms. It first appeared in Super Mario World.
Effect: "Transforms {{user}} or {{char}} into Cape {{user}} or {{char}}, allowing him to fly after building up speed, glide to slow his descent, and cape spin to attack enemies, similarly to the Super Leaf"
- #11Magic Carrot
Keys: Magic Carrot
A Carrot (alternatively lowercase), also referred to as a Magic Carrot, is an item that appears in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. It transforms Mario into Bunny Mario, but Wario also uses it to transform into Bunny Wario. A sentient Carrot appears in Super Mario-kun, first appearing in the last chapter of Volume 6, where she helps Mario defeat a Ragumo and Bopping Toady. When the Super Mario Land 2 arc properly starts in the next volume, Carrot, turned into a proper character, joins Mario on his adventure, giving him the Bunny Mario powers whenever he touches her. In personality, she resembles Luigi from the previous story arc, in that she is more reasonable and smarter than Mario, always getting angry at him whenever he does something foolish. During the final battle, Carrot gets hypnotized by Wario and turns evil, granting him the Bunny powers, but is later freed. More carrots appear in later chapters and volumes, but they are just normal, non-anthropomorphic carrots. One of those carrots, sold by Wario in Volume 6, turns Bowser into an ox. Carrots appear in Mario Kirby Meisaku Video briefly. After Mario crashes his kart during his pursuit of the mysterious thief W, who was trying to escape in his plane, the Bulldog, Mario finds a garden full of Carrots, eats one, and transforms into Bunny Mario. Carrots in the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack in Minecraft replace the traditional Minecraft carrots. Carrots in Mario Party: The Top 100 replace the regular carrots seen in the minigame Rockin' Raceway.
Effect: "Transforms {{user}} or {{char}} into Bunny {{user}} or {{char}}, allowing him to slow his descent or hover in midair"
- #12Cloud Flower
Keys: Cloud Flower
A Cloud Flower is a power-up from Super Mario Galaxy 2. The flower of the plant looks like a cloud with eyes. If Mario grabs one, he will transform into Cloud Mario. As Cloud Mario, he will be able to create clouds as temporary platforms by spinning. These clouds have faces on them. Additionally, only three clouds at a time can be made, although Mario may obtain another flower to replenish his cloud supply. The Cloud Flower improves Mario's jumping abilities, as he now falls slower and his long jumps are longer. A jumping trick that is little known is that the bounce made when Mario spins the clouds can be used to make Mario's jumps higher, although timing is difficult. The clouds can be ground-pounded to be destroyed, although Mario will fall straight through the cloud if destroyed this way. The Cloud Flower also gives Mario the ability to stand on clouds that disappear when the normal Mario stands on it. However, if Cloud Mario touches water or takes damage, he reverts to regular Mario, causing any of his cloud platforms to disappear. Cloud Flowers first appear in the Fluffy Bluff Galaxy. In the Puzzle Plank Galaxy, they are used to battle the boss Bugaboom. The Cloudy Court Galaxy introduces the fact that Mario's clouds will be affected by wind (and thus will move). The Starshine Beach Galaxy has the Cloud Flower help in reaching the tip of the tower. The Throwback Galaxy requires Mario to use the Cloud Flower to collect Silver Stars. In Bowser Jr.'s Boom Bunker, the Cloud Flower is needed to defeat Bowser Jr. In Bowser's Galaxy Generator, the Cloud Flower will be used, up until Mario acquires Yoshi. It is also used to collect multiple Green Power Stars in some of the aforementioned galaxies, along with in the Twisty Trials Galaxy. The Cloud Flower is the only power-up that is usable on Starship Mario. It is also the only power up to appear in the game's final galaxy, the Grandmaster Galaxy. In that galaxy's daredevil run, Mario will be in his cloud-form up until the end; as there is no water or other power-ups, Mario's status as Cloud Mario does not disappear when in contact with a Launch Star, and if Mario takes damage, he loses a life and will have to restart the whole level. The noise it makes when Mario collects a Cloud Flower after having used at least one of his three clouds (though not completely losing the power-up) is very similar to, if not exactly the same as the noise it makes in Super Mario Sunshine when a previously used fruit reappears in its permanent location, as well as the sound for one of the boxes containing nozzles being opened. In the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack in Minecraft, Azure Bluets are replaced by Cloud Flowers. In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, a Cloud Flower makes a cameo on the Starship Mario spirit's artwork.
Effect: "Transforms {{user}} or {{char}} into Cloud {{user}} or {{char}}, allowing him to create up to 3 cloud platforms (which are replenished upon collecting another Cloud Flower) make floaty jumps, and walk on clouds"
- #13Coin Box
Keys: Coin Box
Coin Boxes, formerly known as ? Boxes, are objects introduced in Super Mario 3D Land. Players that use them will receive a great but limited number of coins as they move.
Effect: "Slowly gives {{user}} or {{char}} one coin at a time when worn, up to a limit of 100 (with no limit in Super Mario 3D Land). Moving around increases the rate at which coins are gained. Reaching the coin limit, taking damage, or clearing the level removes the box, rewarding an extra life in the latter case"
- #14Double Cherry
Keys: Double Cherry
The Double Cherry is an item first appearing in Super Mario 3D World. The Double Cherry's conception comes from the result of a mistake made by a staff member with the placement tool, which created two player Marios. The staff thought it was a good idea and decided to implement it in the game.
Effect: "Transforms {{user}} or {{char}} into Double {{user}} or {{char}}, creating a clone similarly to the Copy Flower. There can be up to 5 clones of each character on screen. If a clone takes damage, it disappears"
- #15Dragon Pot
Keys: Dragon Pot
The Dragon Pot, also known as Dragon Hat, Dragon Helmet, or simply Dragon, is a Power Up Pot in Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 that turns Wario into Dragon Wario. A dragon head replaces Wario's hat when he gets one, allowing him to shoot fire and roast most enemies and blocks, including while underwater.
Effect: "Transforms {{user}} or {{char}} into Dragon {{user}} or {{char}}, which allows him to shoot fire out of his hat for a few seconds"
- #16Drill Mushroom
Keys: Drill Mushroom
The Drill Mushroom is a power-up item that first appeared in Super Mario Bros. Wonder. It takes the form of a mushroom with a gray drill and a red base in place of the cap, resembling the Spin Drill from Super Mario Galaxy 2. This item chiefly enables its users to move through the ground and ceiling.
Effect: "Transforms {{user}} or {{char}} into Drill {{user}} or {{char}}, allowing him to defend from attacks coming from above, drill down and break certain objects with it, and burrow both underground and into the ceiling similar to the Spin Drill from Super Mario Galaxy 2"
- #17Dry Bones Shell
Keys: Dry Bones Shell
The Dry Bones Shell is an item in Super Mario Maker 2, available in the editor as an alternate object to Dry Bones. Unlike Buzzy Shells and Spiny Shells, Dry Bones Shells are upside down and cannot be worn on the head. Instead, they can be worn by Mario in a similar way to a Goomba's Shoe and are used to float across liquid hazards (including lava and poison), ground pound, and become invulnerable temporarily by turning into a pile of bones. Additionally, they can be kicked, though they break upon hitting a wall. The Dry Bones Shell is the only possible means of Ground Pounding in the Super Mario World game style. Much like giant Goomba's Shoes, Ground Pounding with a Dry Bones Shell instantly defeats boss enemies, even Bowser, as if a Thwomp, a Muncher, or a solid object landed on top of them. The only enemies that cannot be defeated with a Dry Bones Shell are Thwomps, Munchers (both of which are instead treated as terrain), the Angry Sun, and Phantos produced from Cursed Keys (both of which still damage the player). When a Dry Bones Shell is placed or kicked underwater, it floats towards the surface instead of sinking down like other items; when worn, the player acts as if they grabbed an item: the player cannot use the jump buttons to swim, but they float towards the surface when not inputting any buttons, and can also manually float by pressing or sink by pressing . The usage of Dry Bones Shell to gain temporary invulnerability resembles Statue Mario's ability in Super Mario Bros. 3; its secondary use as a Ground Pound while airborne is also similar to how Statue Mario works in Super Mario 3D Land, where attempting to perform a Ground Pound while under the Statue Leaf's effect causes Mario to turn into Statue Mario in the air. In the story mode, Undodog gives Mario the job Swamp Escape by Shell!, which when completed gives Undodog a big Dry Bones Shell as a doghouse. Another job called Secret of the Dry Bones Shell focuses on the shell as well. Even though there are Dry Bones in the Super Mario 3D World style, the Dry Bones Shell is not available in that game style. In the climax of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Invincible Luigi briefly uses a Dry Bones Shell from a defeated Dry Bones as a shield.
Effect: "Acts like the Goomba's Shoe when worn, but can Ground Pound by default, lacking a big or winged version. It can also float on lava and poison, and allows {{user}} or {{char}} to play dead and be invincible for a moment"
- #18Elephant Fruit
Keys: Elephant Fruit
An Elephant Fruit is a power-up item that first appeared in Super Mario Bros. Wonder. It is a red and white fruit, resembling an apple with an elephant trunk and ears, as well as two beady eyes.
Effect: "Transforms {{user}} or {{char}} into Elephant {{user}} or {{char}}, allowing him to attack and defeat enemies by swinging his trunk at them, break through blocks from below or the side, store water in his trunk and spray it on flowers, and dash across wide gaps"
- #19Fire Flower
Keys: Fire Flower
Fire Flowers (alternatively written as Fireflowers), also known as Flame Flowers, are power-ups introduced in Super Mario Bros. They change the player character into their Fire form, allowing them to throw fireballs, which defeat enemies, melt Ice Blocks, and light up dark areas. The Fire Flower is grabbed and wielded in most appearances outside of the Super Mario series, and certain media such as Club Nintendo and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door suggest that Fire Flowers are eaten by the characters. While Mario in Club Nintendo remarks that the Fire Flower tastes "disgusting," the bio for Fire Flower's constellation in Mario Party 9 describes it as a spicy and "surprisingly tasty snack." It is an upgrade over the Super Mushroom, which is similarly reflected by the Flower Cup, which a Fire Flower is a symbol of, being higher ranked than the Mushroom Cup. Fire Flowers were originally design with white petals, a center orange circle, a green stem, and two green leaves for Super Mario Bros. The design was updated in Super Mario World to resemble an orange tulip with a happy face, as well as a shorter stem and smaller leaves. Super Mario All-Stars introduced the current design of Fire Flowers, which has red and yellow petals stylized as a continuous round shape, a white face with eyes, and a green stem with two leaves. Fire Flowers in Super Smash Bros. are depicted with taller leaves and a round flower, and those in Super Smash Bros. Melee have pink petals, a yellow face with eyes, and thinner leaves. The Fire Flower has seen a number of variants. Its ice counterpart is known as the Ice Flower, which is a common power-up after New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and its golden counterpart is known as the Gold Flower. The Fire Flower is used as a basis for Flower Points in a few of the role-playing games.
Effect: "Transforms {{user}} or {{char}} into Fire {{user}} or {{char}}, allowing him to throw fireballs"
- #20Frog Suit
Keys: Frog Suit
The Frog Suit is a power-up that debuted in Super Mario Bros. 3. The Frog Suit transforms Mario or Luigi into Frog Mario or Frog Luigi. It grants Mario or Luigi the power to jump higher, swim faster, and resist water currents better, but they can only hop while on land. When Frog Mario or Frog Luigi is hit by an enemy, they revert back to Super Mario or Super Luigi. The Penguin Suit of New Super Mario Bros. Wii has somewhat similar swimming abilities to those of the Frog Suit. In the multiplayer mode of Super Mario Maker 2, Frog Mario is red instead of green to distinguish him from Frog Luigi
Effect: "Transforms {{user}} or {{char}} into Frog {{user}} or {{char}}, allowing him to swim faster in any direction and jump higher"
- #21Garlic Bottle
Keys: Garlic Bottle
The garlic bottle (or Garlic Bottle), also known as Garlic Pot, Hard Hat, Garlic or a Pot, is a Power Up Pot in the first two games of the Wario Land series, Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 and Virtual Boy Wario Land, functioning identically in both games. The garlic bottle power-up is found in most levels within ? Blocks. By collecting a garlic bottle, Wario will transform into Bull Wario, giving him the ability to Ground Pound and perform stronger Barges. If collected while Wario is small, it will instead return him to normal size, similarly to the function of a Super Mushroom.
Effect: "Transforms Small {{user}} or {{char}} into normal {{user}} or {{char}}, and normal {{user}} or {{char}} to Bull {{user}} or {{char}}"
- #22Giga Bell
Keys: Giga Bell
Giga Bells are power-ups that appear in the Bowser's Fury campaign of Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. A Giga Bell transforms Mario into Giga Cat Mario, but its power can be accessed only by collecting Cat Shines. Unlike most power-ups in the Super Mario series, Giga Bells are capable of speech. They resemble standard Super Bells but are much larger, with cat ears and whiskers, green eyes, and a more orange coloration in their active state, with their dormant state depicting them as grayed-out and stone-like. When they become available for use, they emit a ring similar to but much deeper than that of Super Bells, in addition to a low-pitched meow. After Bowser Jr. covers Bowser with black goop and turns him into Fury Bowser, the goop spreads throughout Lake Lapcat, including onto the three Giga Bells of the area. Each Giga Bell has four major islands surrounding it, which altogether comprise each of three major regions: the Lakeside, Ruins, and Wasteland. The Lakeside region is available to explore after Mario collects the "Make the Lighthouse Shine" Cat Shine on Fur Step Island. After Fury Bowser is defeated once, the Ruins region and its Giga Bell appear. After he is defeated three times, the Wasteland region and its Giga Bell appear. Each Giga Bell rests on a pedestal with a short staircase leading to the top. Several coin piles appear on the highest step. When a Giga Bell is first encountered, it is corrupted by black goop, and Mario takes damage if he touches it. Mario must collect a specific number of Cat Shines to cleanse all available Giga Bells of goop, which is displayed if Mario stands in front of it. This number is initially five, and it grows after each time Fury Bowser is defeated, changing to 15, then 20, then 40, and finally 50 Cat Shines required to activate the Giga Bells. After all five missions have been completed on an island, leaving and returning to it displays the text "(number) to awaken (Japanese: 目覚めよ!ギガベル, Mezameyo! Giga Beru)," indicating how many Cat Shines are left to collect to activate any available Giga Bells. When enough Cat Shines are collected to meet the required number, their power removes some goop from every available Giga Bell, revealing a stone-like appearance. The Giga Bells then remain inactive until Fury Bowser rises out of the Fury Sun and begins rampaging. Once a rampage begins, any available Giga Bells immediately become available for use, signified by a cutscene showing them activate and a bright light appearing over each one. If a rampage ends before Mario collects a Giga Bell, it returns to its inactive state. If Mario collects a Giga Bell during a rampage, a cutscene showing him transforming from Cat Mario into Giga Cat Mario plays, regardless of the power-up form he was in before the cutscene. This enables him to battle Fury Bowser directly. In the final boss battle of the campaign, Giant Bowser gathers all three Giga Bells to prevent Mario from using them and encases them in a crystal ball. Mario must ram Plessie into this ball multiple times until it breaks. Plessie and Mario then simultaneously collect all three Giga Bells, at which point Plessie enters his own Cat form, defeating Bowser and returning him to normal. After the main story of the campaign is completed, all three Giga Bells are completely cleansed of goop. Their tops are then accessible, and ground-pounding atop a Giga Bell in this state rewards the player with a Super Bell.
Effect: "Transforms {{user}} or {{char}} into Giga Cat {{user}} or {{char}}, a gigantic version of Cat {{user}} or {{char}} with immunity to black goop and the ability to directly battle and damage Fury Bowser"
- #23Gold Block
Keys: Gold Block
Gold Blocks are golden Brick Blocks in New Super Mario Bros. 2. One usually appears when Mario or Luigi claims at least 10 coins out of a Coin Block. When this happens, Mario or Luigi can wear the Gold Block over his head, thus producing coins from it if he keeps moving, making it very similar in function to the ? Boxes from Super Mario 3D Land. If Mario or Luigi runs fast enough, the number of coins produced from the block increases. When a Gold Block is worn, the face side of it resembles Mario's/Luigi's face. The Gold Block disappears after 100 coins have been collected from it, or if Mario or Luigi is hit while wearing it. While playing in co-op mode, if a player ground-pounds on another player wearing a Gold Block, they lose the Gold Block as well. If Mario/Luigi grabs the Goal Pole while still wearing the Gold Block, he can continue to get coins from going down the pole and jumping off it, finally losing the Gold Block after landing on the ground. Hitting one from either side, from above, or while wearing another Gold Block causes 50 coins to spout out of the top before it disappears. A Gold Block also protects against the stone spell used by the Koopalings in World 6 and World Star, though only once. Flying Gold Blocks also appear in the game and are seen flying around in their idle golden forms, since there are no flying Coin Blocks. They occasionally appear for every 200,000 points earned and fly above Mario or Luigi on the world map, and can be used right away upon him entering a level, similar to the red Flying ? Blocks in the first New Super Mario Bros. Also, when the score reaches the maximum of 999,999,999 points, Flying Gold Blocks always appear no matter how many points Mario or Luigi earns. A trophy of Mario wearing a Gold Block appears in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS. In Super Mario Party, Hidden Blocks resemble Gold Blocks. In Mario Strikers: Battle League, Gold Blocks appear in a gold-themed goal alongside Coins, a Star Coin and golden Super Star statues in the Strikers Club customization options for Mushroom Hill.
Effect: "Acts similarly to the Coin Box, slowly granting {{user}} or {{char}} coins up to a limit of 100. Reaching the limit, taking damage or clearing the level removes the box, rewarding coins in the latter case. Hitting a Gold Block from either side, above, or while wearing another one causes 50 coins to spout out instead"
- #24Gold Flower
Keys: Gold Flower
Gold Flowers are power-ups which debuted in New Super Mario Bros. 2. They first appear in World 2-1. When collected, Mario or Luigi become Gold Mario or Silver Luigi and are able to shoot golden or silver fireballs that explode and do splash damage when they hit blocks, enemies, or walls. If enemies are hit by the projectiles, they will yield an amount of coins. These fireballs are capable of taking out stronger enemies that are normally immune to regular fireballs. However, the Boohemoth cannot be defeated with the Gold Flower, due to its colossal size. Even Bowser can be taken out with a single gold or silver fireball, as evidenced with the Gold Classics Pack. Jumping on stompable enemies also gives coins. Mario or Luigi can also transform several Brick Blocks at once into coins with a fireball shot. Blocks with items will be activated instead. If Gold Mario or Silver Luigi beat a level, they return to Fire form respectively. If they take damage, they will revert to Super form. The Mario Bros. can also receive a free Gold Flower from Toad if they were to find and enter a Yellow Toad House (except in World Star, where he gives a Super Star instead). It is also possible to win a Gold Flower for collecting the eight Red Coins from Red Rings found in Rainbow Courses and Warp Cannons. The Gold Flower has higher priority than most other items, meaning that only the Super Star can replace this item in the player's inventory. Outside the inventory, only the Mega Mushroom and the Invincibility Leaf have higher priority than the Gold Flower, and if Mario or Luigi are under the effects of the Invincibility Leaf when they get hold of a Gold Flower, it is placed in the player's inventory. The Gold Flower is the only power-up (aside from the Super Leaf and the Mega Mushroom) that makes an unique noise when coming out of a Question Block and when being used to transform. Gold Flowers return as usable item shot in Mario Golf: World Tour. They grant the player one coin for every yard that the ball travels, and are not effective in putts.
Effect: "Transforms {{user}} or {{char}} into Gold {{user}} or {{char}}, allowing him to launch golden fireballs, which explode with a small blast radius. Any enemies hit will award an amount of coins based on the number of enemies hit. These fireballs can also hit ? Blocks and turn Brick Blocks into coins. If Gold {{user}} or {{char}} touches a Gold Mushroom, he is rewarded 100 coins instead of 50. Taking damage, collecting an Invincibility Leaf or Mega Mushroom, or clearing the level ends the Gold Flower's effect, reverting {{user}} or {{char}} to Fire {{user}} or {{char}} in the latter case"
- #25Goomba Mask
Keys: Goomba Mask
A Goomba Mask, also written lowercase as Goomba mask, is an item that first appears in Super Mario 3D World. It disguises the user as a Goomba, allowing them to walk past enemies without getting noticed and attacked.
Effect: "Disguises {{user}} or {{char}} as a Goomba, allowing him to sneak by certain enemies without being detected"
- #26Goomba's Shoe
Keys: Goomba's Shoe
A Goomba's Shoe (or Goomba's shoe), also known as the Shoe, is a large, green-colored boot with a wind-up key sticking out of the back of it. It is worn by a Shoe Goomba. It is one of the most uncommon of all the power-ups in the entire Super Mario franchise, and made its first game appearance in Super Mario Bros. 3. The Goomba's Shoe was originally known in the PRG0 English NES release as Kuribo's shoe (also formatted as Kuribo's Shoe), also known as Kuribo's Boot, with "Kuribo" being the Japanese name of Goomba left unchanged. The name was correctly translated as Goomba's shoe in the PRG1 English NES localization. The name is localized in the re-releases of Super Mario Bros. 3 and the Game Boy Advance remake, but the item has been called Kuribo's Shoe again in Super Mario All-Stars, due to it being derived from the PRG0 localization. In Super Mario Maker, there are big versions that can Ground Pound and winged versions that can Flutter Jump, as well as a Stiletto variant whose big version breaks blocks when Ground Pounding.
Effect: "Lets {{user}} or {{char}} hop across spikes and sharp-toothed or spiky enemies, such as Munchers and Spinies, when worn. Taking damage or clearing the level removes the Goomba's Shoe"
- #27Green Shell
Keys: Green Shell
Green Shells (also formatted as green shells) are a common variety of Koopa Shells. Though their appearance remains largely the same, Green Shells are occasionally differentiated from those of other colors of shells.
Effects: "1- Allows {{user}} or {{char}} to navigate over lava or water, travel at fast speed and ram into enemies to defeat them instantly or swim faster in water if they grab it while underwater, for a short period of time or until it breaks. 2- Allows {{user}} or {{char}} to slide across the ground and the surface of water while moving, similarly to Shell {{user}} or {{char}}, and defeat most enemies they contact for a certain amount of time, if the characters are crouching while holding it in a running state. {{user}} or {{char}} can also makes the shell jump and spin in place if they climb into it while stationary and jump. In this state, the characters cannot be forced out of the shell"
- #28Jet Pot
Keys: Jet Pot
The Jet Pot, also known as Jet Hat or simply Jet, is a rabbit-shaped Power Up Pot that turns Wario into Jet Wario in Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3. When Wario gets one, thrusters appear on a helmet, allowing him flight. Since Wario is so heavy, he glides down slowly, but can still fly until he hits the ground. As Jet Wario, Wario's jumping power is increased as well as his walking speed.
Effect: "Transforms {{user}} or {{char}} into Jet {{user}} or {{char}}, which allows him to temporarily fly horizontally and walk faster"
- #29Lakitu's Cloud
Keys: Lakitu's Cloud
Lakitu's Cloud (occasionally formatted as Lakitu's cloud) is a type of object introduced in Super Mario Bros. It is a cloud with a smiley face on it, usually inhabited and maneuvered through the air by a Lakitu. Certain games of the Super Mario series, starting with Super Mario World, allow the player character to ride in one temporarily.
Effect: "Usually inhabited and maneuvered through the air by Lakitus. {{user}} or {{char}} can ride around in them"
- #30Light Box
Keys: Light Box
A Light Box (known as a Beam Box in both the American Prima Official Game Guide and the British English version of Super Mario 3D World) is an object appearing in Super Mario 3D World and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. Like the Propeller Box, ? Box, and Cannon Box, it can be worn over the player's body. Light Boxes can be found in sets of four (one for each player) inside a Ghost House. Upon a character wearing one, the block changes into the color depending on the character (red for Mario, green for Luigi, pink for Princess Peach, blue for Toad, and cyan for Rosalina), and the lamp on the front emits a beam of light, which can be used not only to light up any dark spaces in front of the player but also to defeat ghost enemies, such as Peepas, Boos, and Big Boos. The beam of light must be shone on the enemies for a short period of time to defeat them. Light Boxes are used by player character to damage King Boo in the minigame King Boo's Light Smite in Mario Party: Star Rush. Later in the fight, a large gold Light Box deals three points rather than one point, but gold Light Boxes are heavier to carry. In this minigame, players carry the Light Box, rather than wear it as they did in Super Mario 3D World.
Effect: "Shines a light in front of {{user}} or {{char}} when worn, which can defeat ghostly enemies, such as Boos"
- #31Lucky Bell
Keys: Lucky Bell
The Lucky Bell, also called the Lucky Cat power-up, is an item introduced in Super Mario 3D World. It resembles a bronze jingle bell, or possibly a konguro'o, with eyes. It turns Mario into his Cat form with a red collar with a bronze bell resembling the power-up added to it; this version of the form lets him transform into Lucky Cat Mario, very akin to the Tanooki Suit's Statue form, except it gives him coins while falling, with more being given the higher he falls, and makes him invincible; however, it does not protect him against lava, poison, Charvaarghs, Fuzzy Hordes, or being crushed. It is considered an upgrade of the Super Bell, as later in the game, it replaces the Super Bell in the remixed courses. The Lucky Bell starts appearing in the Bonus World, World Mushroom in the level World Mushroom-2, Spiky Mount Beanpole. The Lucky Bell is the only power-up item to not have a corresponding Stamp. It serves as the counterpart of the Statue Leaf from Super Mario 3D Land. Lucky Bells also appear in the Bowser's Fury mode of the enhanced port. Up to five Lucky Bells can be stored within the inventory, like the other power-up items. Lucky Bells are uncommon, though if Mario hits a Koopa Shell with fireballs, boomerangs, or tail whips eight times before it lands, the shell will break open to reveal a Lucky Bell. A Lucky Bell appears in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass as the emblem of the Lucky Cat Cup.
Effect: "Transforms {{user}} or {{char}} into a special variation of Cat {{user}} or {{char}} with a red collar and a bell, and additionally allows him to turn into Lucky Cat {{user}} or {{char}} by Ground Pounding. Lucky Cat {{user}} or {{char}} earns coins while falling, and is invincible"
- #32Mega Mushroom
Keys: Mega Mushroom
A Mega Mushroom is a type of mushroom that enlarges the user temporarily, allowing them to walk over and destroy most objects in their path, including large and powerful enemies. A Mega Mushroom was first seen in Mario Party 4, where it was depicted as a normally proportioned mushroom with a turquoise cap; in New Super Mario Bros., it received a more distinctive design, being much bigger, bearing a bulbous yellow cap with red spots, a similar coloration to the Super Mushrooms in Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels. A Mega Mushroom hops along the ground and, in their initial appearance, would actively flee from Mario. Its opposite counterpart is the Mini Mushroom, which shrinks the character. In Super Mario 64 DS and the Super Smash Bros. series, the Super Mushroom has a similar effect to Mega Mushrooms in other games. In Super Paper Mario, Mario also becomes his Super Mario Bros. sprite in Mega form.
Effect: "Temporarily transforms {{user}} or {{char}} into Mega {{user}} or {{char}}, making him giant and able to destroy everything in his path"
- #33Metal Cap
Keys: Metal Cap
The Metal Cap is an accessory that makes its debut in Super Mario 64. It is usually found in green blocks, which become solid upon the player pressing the Metal Cap Switch in the Cavern of the Metal Cap. The Metal Cap turns Mario into Metal Mario, making him invulnerable and extremely heavy. Because of this, he cannot swim and instead sinks directly to the bottom of the pool of water. While underwater, Metal Mario is unable to use most of his abilities beyond walking and a standard jump. Metal Mario does not have to breathe and is therefore unaffected by strange clouds and cannot drown. The effect lasts for 20 seconds. Besides the location where they are found, Metal Caps also appear in Whomp's Fortress, Bowser in the Dark World, Jolly Roger Bay, Hazy Maze Cave, Dire, Dire Docks, and Wet-Dry World. If Mario gets another power when the Metal Cap is in effect, they will combine. This is possible in Dire, Dire Docks, where a green block is located directly beside a blue block, and in Wet-Dry World, where the player can drain the water in the downtown area and collect the Metal Cap, then jump down and collect the Vanish Cap. Collecting both gives Mario the powers of both his Vanish form and Metal form. An unused texture in the game shows a metallic version of the wings from the Wing Cap, suggesting that it would have been possible to combine the Wing Cap with the Metal Cap as well. In Super Mario 64 DS, the Metal Cap itself does not appear. Instead, Wario becomes Metal Wario when he grabs a Power Flower but still retains the same properties as Metal Mario, and the music associated with the Metal Cap is retained. A similar item, the Metal Mushroom Orb from the Mario Party series, additionally transforms characters into metal forms. In Super Mario Odyssey, the Metal Cap (referred to as the Metal Mario Cap) appears as a cap that can be purchased from Crazy Cap stores, having a physical appearance similar to that of Super Mario 64. The cap becomes available after the player has collected 560 Power Moons, and it costs 1,000 coins. Aside from the ability to use the cap in conjunction with either the Mario 64 Outfit or the Metal Mario Outfit to enter a specific area in the Mushroom Kingdom, the cap is aesthetic and serves no other gameplay advantages.
Effect: "Temporarily transforms {{user}} or {{char}} into Metal {{user}} or {{char}}, making him heavier, which makes his jumps shorter but enables him to activate switches on the ground and walk underwater. He is also invincible, does not need to breathe underwater, and can resist toxic fumes"
- #34Mini Mushroom
Keys: Mini Mushroom
The Mini Mushroom is a type of mushroom found in the Mushroom Kingdom. Whoever uses it shrinks greatly in size and is capable of entering smaller areas. Its opposite counterpart is the Mega Mushroom, which makes the player grow to a massive size. In New Super Mario Bros. U and subsequent titles, Mini Mario can also walk on walls.
Effect: "Transforms {{user}} or {{char}} into Mini {{user}} or {{char}}, allowing him to walk on water, make floaty jumps, and enter tiny passages. Mini {{user}} or {{char}} can also walk on walls"
- #35Mystery Mushroom
Keys: Mystery Mushroom
The Mystery Mushroom is a power-up that appears exclusively in Super Mario Maker. It resembles the sprite of a Super Mushroom from Super Mario Bros. with the question mark of a ? Block printed on its cap. When Mario touches one, he transforms into Costume Mario and takes the form of one of various costumes, many of which are based on non-Super Mario Nintendo characters. Many of the costumes can be unlocked by completing the 100 Mario Challenge mode on a certain difficulty or by scanning any compatible amiibo, while some are unlocked by completing an Event Course. Upon touching one while playing, Mario takes the appearance of the costume preset to the Mystery Mushroom in editing mode. (If no specific costume for the Mystery Mushroom has been set, Mario transforms into a random character instead.) It has the same effect as an ordinary Super Mushroom as it grants Mario an extra hit point and he can break Brick Blocks, except it maintains or shrinks him down (depending on his current state) to Small Mario's size, and also allows him to crouch, which he typically cannot do in the Super Mario Bros. game style in this size. Costume Mario cannot wear shell helmets. Mystery Mushrooms are only available in the Super Mario Bros. style of the game, as it is replaced by the Super Leaf, Cape Feather, or Propeller Mushroom in the other game styles. The Mystery Mushroom is similar to the character caps in Super Mario 64 DS, which also allowed Mario to transform into other characters (and vice-versa). However, while a cap-wearing Mario kept his voice and gained the new character's abilities, Costume Mario keeps Super Mario's abilities while gaining the character's voice or sound effects in most cases. Mystery Mushrooms have been removed from Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS, with the Weird Mushroom taking its place as the style exclusive power-up, although two glitches, one involving a Big Magikoopa, used to make them appear in-game. When collected, they would turn Mario into Small Mario, but he also has the ability to break blocks, which Small Mario normally cannot do, and can take another hit from enemies. It also showed a different sprite when the player held down on +Control Pad down or Circle Pad. The Mystery Mushroom would have returned in Super Mario Maker 2 alongside Costume Mario, but they were scrapped from the final game for unknown reasons. However, the version 2.0 update added a Master Sword power-up that transforms the player into Link and grants additional abilities.
Effect: "Transforms {{user}} or {{char}} into Costume Mario, granting him the abilities of Super Mario as well as the appearance of a random character. It is exclusive to the Super Mario Bros. style"
- #36P-Acorn
Keys: P-Acorn
A P-Acorn is an item in New Super Mario Bros. U. It transforms its user into Power Squirrel Mario with the ability to midair jump indefinitely for the entire stage, similar to the P-Wing and Cape Feather from previous games. Its appearance is similar to the Super Acorn, but the top is pale white and gray-striped, with a large, red "P" imprinted on it. In Mario's case, his hat and shirt become pale gray; his hat has a large, red "P" instead of his "M" emblem; and he also appears to have a sheen around him. The P-Acorn's power will disappear if the player loses a life, takes damage, grabs a non-Acorn power-up, or completes a level without losing the power-up (the latter of which causing the player to change to the regular Flying Squirrel form). However, the player will not lose the power-up if the course is completed via capturing Nabbit. The P-Acorn also grants the player access to shortcuts that completely skip underground sections of levels by flying over the top of the screen past the pipe leading underground, which is otherwise not possible with a normal Super Acorn or even a Propeller Suit. A few levels that allow these shortcuts are Tilted Tunnel, Fire Snake Cavern, Tropical Refresher, Icicle Caverns, and Shifting-Floor Cave. A P-Acorn can be obtained by either capturing Nabbit and returning his sack to a Toad, or after defeating Bowser, if the player saves their profile then opens it again, a P-Acorn will appear instead of a Super Acorn (it also seems to appear at other times). A P-Acorn sometimes appears on the main map in the place of a Super Acorn. There is a rare chance of obtaining a P-Acorn in the middle of Tilted Tunnel and Crushing Cogs Tower on the world map instead of a Super Acorn.
Effect: "Transforms {{user}} or {{char}} into Power Squirrel {{user}} or {{char}}, granting him the abilities of Flying Squirrel {{user}} or {{char}} as well as allowing him to make infinite midair jumps for one level. Taking damage, grabbing a non-flight-based power-up, or clearing the level ends the P-Acorn's effect, reverting {{user}} or {{char}} to Flying Squirrel {{user}} or {{char}} in the latter case"
- #37P-Wing
Keys: P-Wing
The P-Wing is a special item that debuted in Super Mario Bros. 3. The "P" stands for "Paratroopa" or "Patapata" (the Japanese name for that enemy). It functions similarly to the earlier power-up from Super Mario Bros. Special simply known as the Wing. There is a similar item in New Super Mario Bros. U called the P-Acorn which gives the user infinite gliding.
Effect: "Transforms {{user}} or {{char}} into Raccoon {{user}} or {{char}}, but also gives him infinite flight for one level. Taking damage, grabbing a non-flight-based power-up, or clearing the level ends the P-Wing's effect, reverting {{user}} or {{char}}'s flight to normal in the latter case"
- #38Penguin Suit
Keys: Penguin Suit
The Penguin Suit is a power-up that first appears in New Super Mario Bros. Wii. This item is primarily found in World 3 and World 4, and from then on it can be found in Red Toad Houses as well. The Penguin Suit allows players to turn into their Penguin form. Mario and Blue Toad have a blue body, Luigi, Yellow Toad, and Toadette have a navy blue body, and all have short, colored trousers. It gives players the ability to throw Ice Balls at enemies, freezing them (just like the Ice Flower); allowing the frozen enemies to be used as platforms. In addition, the Penguin Suit lets players swim more efficiently underwater. The Penguin Suit also grants players the ability to slide on ice and snow and on water without sinking, as well as breaking any blocks they collide with. Traction on ice is greatly improved as well. It is also able to defeat enemies, but will bounce off a sliding Cooligan or a Piranha Plant unhurt. It is introduced along with the Propeller Mushroom as the newest power-ups in the game. The Penguin Suit reappears in New Super Mario Bros. U and acts the same way it did in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, though the player can only get it through a Red Toad House in Superstar Road. Additionally, Penguin Bowling allows use of the Penguin Suit. It can also be used in the Penguin Pack from Boost Rush Mode. In the expansion pack, New Super Luigi U, the Penguin Suit made more frequent appearances in courses including some outside Superstar Road. In New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, the Penguin Suit can appear as a reward from Enemy Courses. Toadette and Nabbit also possess the Penguin Suit's swimming abilities, regardless of the form the former takes. The Penguin Suit appears in Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition, representing the Water elemental orbs.
Effect: "Transforms {{user}} or {{char}} into Penguin {{user}} or {{char}}, allowing him to slide on his belly and move faster, throw Ice Balls, and swim more freely (similarly to the Blue Shell, Ice Flower, and Frog Suit, respectively). He also does not slide while on ice"
- #39Power Balloon
Keys: Power Balloon
A Power Balloon, sometimes shortened to P Balloon or P-Balloon, is an item introduced in Super Mario World. When touched, it inflates the playable character and allows them to float through the air like a balloon.
Effect: "Temporarily transforms {{user}} or {{char}} into Balloon {{user}} or {{char}}, allowing him to float"
- #40Propeller Box
Keys: Propeller Box
A Propeller Box is a power-up that first appears in Super Mario 3D Land. It is an orange block with eyes and a yellow propeller that characters can wear over their body. The blades of the propeller can be used to rapidly fly into the air to a great height, and then slowly fall back down towards the ground. In Super Mario Maker 2, Mario can use the box up to three times while in the air.
Effect: "Allows {{user}} or {{char}} to whirl up and slowly descend, similarly to the Propeller Mushroom. Taking damage or clearing the level removes the box, rewarding an extra life in the latter case"
- #41Propeller Mushroom
Keys: Propeller Mushroom
The Propeller Mushroom (also known as the Propellerhead or Propeller Suit) is an item introduced in New Super Mario Bros. Wii. The Propeller Mushroom is an orange-capped mushroom with two light-yellow spots and a yellow propeller atop the cap. Obtaining a Propeller Mushroom turns the player into their Propeller form, giving them a character-colored flight suit with a large helmet-like cap that has a propeller sticking out of it and the player's emblem emblazoned on its sides. If left alone, the Propeller Mushroom eventually flies out of the stage. The item was originally a Propeller Suit, acting much like a P-Wing suit with a propeller.
Effect: "Transforms {{user}} or {{char}} into Propeller {{user}} or {{char}}, allowing him to whirl upwards quickly and fall slowly after whirling. He can also drill downwards in midair to fall quickly"
- #42Red POW Box
Keys: Red POW Box
The Red POW Box is an item added in the April 22, 2020 update of Super Mario Maker 2. It is a Red POW Block that Mario, Luigi, Toad, or Toadette can wear in the Super Mario 3D World style only. If they jump into certain blocks while wearing the box, such as Brick Blocks and ? Blocks, the POW activates and the blocks are hit. After three hits, the box falls off and can no longer be used. The three letters on the box are lit up and one turns off after each hit.
Effect: "Gives {{user}} or {{char}} the ability to cause a shockwave when hitting a block or ceiling up to 3 times, similarly to a red POW Block"
- #43Red Star
Keys: Red Star
A Red Star is an item in Super Mario Galaxy. It resembles a red Grand Star and holds the power of the Red Lumas, one of whom first gives Mario or Luigi a Red Star in the Gateway Galaxy. It transforms him into Flying Mario or Flying Luigi, respectively, who has the ability to fly through the air, comparably to Wing Mario in Super Mario 64. A difference is that a Red Star allows the player character to fly more freely, changes the color of his clothes, does not grant him wings, and is self-propelled, like the P-Wing. While Mario or Luigi flies, his hands glow, and he leaves red streaks in his path. Instead of his normal red or green cap and blue overalls, Mario or Luigi wears a black or dark-green cap and overalls and red or green shoes, respectively. The Red Star additionally pulls in nearby Star Bits and coins on the ground or in flight when he star-spins. By holding , the player stops in midair, and red streaks point in the direction Mario or Luigi is facing. After the player collects a Red Star, flight is activated by executing a Star-Spin in the air, not a Triple Jump like with Wing Mario. In the Comet Observatory only, Red Stars can be used for exploration and reaching a few 1-Up Mushrooms that are otherwise inaccessible, such as the one on top of the Garden spire and the one beneath the Gate.
Effect: "Temporarily transforms {{user}} or {{char}} into Flying {{user}} or {{char}}, allowing him to fly freely by spinning"
- #44Rock Mushroom
Keys: Rock Mushroom
The Rock Mushroom is an item that appears in Super Mario Galaxy 2, and is first found in World 2. The Rock Mushroom is primarily found in the Boulder Bowl Galaxy, and also appears in the Melty Monster Galaxy and Freezy Flake Galaxy. Its appearance is that of a regular mushroom with a roughly sculpted rock cap.
Effect: "Transforms {{user}} or {{char}} into Rock {{user}} or {{char}}, allowing him to destroy enemies and objects by rolling into them"
- #45SMB2 Mushroom
Keys: SMB2 Mushroom
The SMB2 Mushroom (short for "Super Mario Bros. 2 Mushroom") is a power-up introduced in the version 3.0.0 update in Super Mario Maker 2 released on April 22, 2020. As the name suggests, it is based on the Mushrooms from Super Mario Bros. 2. It is exclusive to the Super Mario Bros. game style; in Course Maker, they are replaced by Frog Suits in the Super Mario Bros. 3 style, Power Balloons in the Super Mario World style, and Super Acorns in the New Super Mario Bros. U style. In the nighttime ground theme, SMB2 Mushrooms bounce whenever the player jumps. The mushroom transforms the player character into SMB2 versions of themselves (in the case of Toadette, her sprite is fully original as she did not appear in Super Mario Bros. 2). All characters have similar physics to Mario from the original game.
The mushroom affects gameplay in the following ways: "The player character stands on enemies instead of jumps defeating them as usual (exceptions include Boom Boom and the Koopalings). The player character can perform the charge jump. The player character can pick up and throw enemies to defeat other enemies and collect coins. The player character can pick up the shells of large enemies. The player character can pick up and ride on Bullet Bills, Banzai Bills, and cannonballs. The player character can pick up Chain Chomps and use them to defeat enemies. The player character can dig through Cloud Blocks. In the snow theme, the player character can pick snowballs out of ground tiles. Similar to the Superball Flower and Master Sword items, the SMB2 Mushroom also causes music from Super Mario Bros. 2 to play, and changes music depending on the course theme. When using the SMB2 Mushroom in the ground, sky, underwater, forest, desert, airship, and snow themes, the music is replaced by the overworld theme from that game; and in the underground, ghost house, and castle themes, the game's underground theme plays. Sound effects are also borrowed from the game. The boss theme sound effect while in SMB2 Mario is the boss theme from that game, while the final boss sound effect is Wart's boss theme. The bonus game theme uses the source game's character select music, while the Peaceful theme uses the music of the source game's ending. P Switches use the source game's Subspace music, while the sound effect of a thrown POW Block is borrowed from the same action in Super Mario Bros. 2 as well"
Effect: "Transforms {{user}} or {{char}} into SMB2 {{user}} or {{char}}, which gives him a Super Mario Bros. 2 appearance and the abilities from that game, such as picking up enemies and throwing them"
- #46Spin Drill
Keys: Spin Drill
The Spin Drill is an item in Super Mario Galaxy 2. It lets the user dig straight down through dirt by shaking the Wii Remote. It can be used to cross through to the opposite side of a planetoid or to reach cavities inside. Using the Spin Drill doubles as an attack, defeating enemies standing where Mario or Luigi emerges. The Spin Drill ricochets off hard materials such as metal; sloped hard surfaces underground can change the user's trajectory. Despite being held (even making the same sound when picked up as a Green Shell), the Spin Drill functions as a power-up; it cannot be dropped unless the user gets hit, touches a Launch Star, or enters a pipe, and it disappears in the process. Holding a Spin Drill prevents Mario or Luigi from performing certain moves such as the crouch, backward somersault, and long jump, but he can still side-somersault and wall-jump. The Spin Drill appears in Spin-Dig Galaxy, Supermassive Galaxy (to defeat three Big Koopa Troopas), Flipsville Galaxy (during the missions Flipsville's New Digs and Purple Coin Spin Speed Run), the Cosmic Cove Galaxy (at the last planetoid of the mission Exploring the Cosmic Cavern), and Bowser's Galaxy Generator. An item with a similar function, called the Drill Mushroom, appears in Super Mario Bros. Wonder.
Effect: "Allows {{user}} or {{char}} to drill through dirt, which sends him to the other side of the planet he is on"
- #47Spiny Shell
Keys: Spiny Shell
Spiny Shells are the shells worn by Spinies, as a counterpart to Koopa Shells worn by Koopa Troopas. Their uses vary by game series—in platformers. Typically, the spikes on the shell prevent jumps from above, but when upside-down, empty, or in other series, they can be carried (except in the original Super Mario Bros. 3).
Effect: "A Spiny's empty shell, which can be worn by {{user}} or {{char}} to defeat enemies that fall on him and destroy ? Blocks and Hard Blocks in a similar way to Brick Blocks"
- #48Spring Mushroom
Keys: Spring Mushroom
The Spring Mushroom is an item in Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. It appears as a metallic mushroom with eyes and a bulbous coil for a cap. When obtained, it wraps a spring around Mario or Luigi, turning them into Spring Mario or Spring Luigi, respectively. Spring Mario bounces around instead of walking, although he cannot run and is therefore slower and a lot harder to control than without the mushroom. Spring Mario can also jump a bit higher, and a well-timed jump when Mario hits the ground will make him do a very high jump. Spring Mario can also Wall Jump automatically. Spring Mario will also revert back to regular Mario if he touches water, a Sling Star, or a Launch Star, or takes damage in any way.
Effect: "Transforms {{user}} or {{char}} into Spring {{user}} or {{char}}, allowing him to jump higher"
- #49Statue Leaf
Keys: Statue Leaf
Statue Leaves are items found only in Super Mario 3D Land. The Statue Leaf is an alternative version of the Super Leaf that resembles a stone carving of it. Statue Leaves replace Super Leaves in the special levels, and first appear in Special 1-1. Statue Leaves are also contained within Deluxe StreetPass Gifts. Grabbing a Statue Leaf turns Mario or Luigi into his Tanooki or Kitsune form, respectively, with a red or green scarf around his neck. With a Statue Leaf, the Tanooki form regains the ability to transform into a statue (in place of the Ground Pound), thus avoiding enemies (which cannot damage the player) and hazards. This makes this power-up similar to the Tanooki Suit from Super Mario Bros. 3 but without the ability to fly or transform on the ground.
Effect: "Transforms {{user}} or {{char}} into a special variation of Tanooki {{user}} or {{char}} with a red scarf, and additionally allows him to turn into Statue {{user}} or {{char}} by Ground Pounding (similarly to the Tanooki Suit, but without the ability to transform on the ground or fly). Statue {{user}} or {{char}} is invulnerable while active"
- #50Super Acorn
Keys: Super Acorn
The Super Acorn is a power-up item introduced in New Super Mario Bros. U. It is an acorn highly stylized to resemble a mushroom, with red and yellow stripes on top and a red face with eyes on the bottom. It transforms playable characters into their Flying Squirrel forms. There exists a stronger variant called the P-Acorn.
Effect: "Transforms {{user}} or {{char}} into Flying Squirrel {{user}} or {{char}}, allowing him to glide similarly to Cape {{user}} or {{char}}, midair jump, and cling to walls"
