Amanojaku Last appearance "Farewell, Amanojaku - The Descent of Ohma" Actor/Actress Hilary Haig (English) Tomoko Kawakami (Japanese) Satsuki Miyanoshita (宮ノ下 さつき Miyanoshita Satsuki) is the protagonist of the horror-comedy series, Ghost Stories. She is a 2nd year student in Class 3 at Amanogawa high School, who has recently moved with her family to the now-urban town. Upon arriving, she becomes aware of the ghosts that plague the town, and comes to the realization of her mother's involvement of previously sealing them away in the mountains - using her Ghost Journal to the fifth-grader's advantage. Throughout the school year, Satsuki allies herself with fellow classmates Hajime Aoyama and Leo Kakinoki, upper-classmate Momoko Koigakubo, and her younger brother Keiichirou Miyanoshita. Despite being a "ghost hunter" herself, Satsuki has a hard time believing in ghosts, and tries to deny their existence when applicable.
In 2001, Satsuki encounters several spirits, many of which hold grudges against her mother, Kayako Miyanoshita. With this proposition, the young schoolgirl becomes aware of the true danger she's really in, and tries to seal away any ghosts or spirits that try to hurt Satsuki or her friends. While finding peace with her new home, Satsuki becomes close friends with Momoko Koigakubo - the self-proclaimed "Born-Again Christian," and fellow classmates Tomomi Takahashi, Misono Kiyohara, and Aya Etou. However, she holds resentment towards Hajime Aoyama, who continuously ridicules Satsuki throughout the schoolyear, including calling her names and addressing her "panties" through embarrassing remarks.
Appearance
Satsuki's height is around 4 ft 11 in, has a fair skin and bright green eyes. Her hair is reddish brown and often worn in a braid. Typically, she wears a red jacket with cream-colored sleeves, a pink undershirt, a blue skirt, white socks, and black shoes. Her hair is tied back with a pink bow.
In Episode 5, she starts wearing shorts under her skirt to prevent Hajime from seeing her underwear. Personality
SatsukiKeiiKaya Satsuki and Keiichirou Satsuki can be quite mature for her age. She cares a lot and is protective of her little brother Keiichirou. In the absence of their mother Kayako, she has helped raise Keiichirou and has become a beloved figure for him. She also does the housework, which she refers to as the "work of a housewife." Because of Keiichirou, she tries to give a strong appearance in order to protect him, such as trying not to be scared when she actually is.
She's shown to be very smart in a few episodes—for example, she figured out how to stop Akane in Episode 18. Satsuki is very strong and determined within, although she can also be a bit moody, mostly because of Hajime and Leo's reckless behavior (although these are usually instigated by Hajime). In ADV dub, she is shown to be more petulant and stubborn.
She is very self-conscious about her appearance, and other characters (mainly Hajime) are shown mocking her looks. Highly aggressive, Satsuki is prone to giving violent threats, such as threatening to put duct tape over the air holes of Amanojaku's carrier. However, she is on good terms with Hajime and Leo. It was even hinted that she may harbor some feelings toward Hajime, and it was confirmed by the anime's creator. Satsuki is also Momoko's best friend, and generally gets along with the students at Amanogawa School. Story
Satsuki was born in May of 1990. Her mother, Kayako, died when Satsuki was only five years old. When Satsuki was eleven, she moved with her brother Keiichirou and her father Reiichirou from Tokyo to her mother's hometown, and quickly discovered that the old schoolhouse next to her school is haunted. She met some new friends at her new school: Hajime, her next door neighbour; Leo, Hajime's best friend; and Momoko, her best friend. Satsuki soon found out that her mother confronted several evil entities (including Amanojaku, who possesed her cat Kaya) that haunted the town. She began writing all her supernatural experiences in a diary, which she called "The Ghost Journal." Now that the seals have been broken, all the ghosts are free again. It's up to Satsuki and her friends to seal them away. Quotes (English Dub)

Momoko Koigakubo (恋ヶ窪 桃子 Koigakubo Momoko) (Nicole, in the Latin Spanish dub) is one of the main characters of Ghost Stories. Momoko is Satsuki Miyanoshita’s best friend and is in her 3rd year. She is the oldest in her friend group. She is often possessed by Kayako Miyanoshita.
Appearance
Momoko is a tall girl with a height around 5 ft 4 in, has fair skin, brown eyes, and lavender-colored hair. She typically wears a sailor-themed school uniform consisting of a grayish skirt with a white trim, blue knee-high socks, and brown loafers. Her shirt is white and long-sleeved, with a blue collar and a yellow bow on it. She keeps her hair tied back in a ponytail with a large, pastel pink bow. She also has long curtain bangs. Personality
In the original anime, Momoko is described as fearless, independent, smart, tranquil, and very beautiful. She is a very sweet girl who always has a plan and does not think twice about helping her friends. Satsuki and Keiichirou consider Momoko as their "older sister." She does not seem to care about boys. English Dub Version
However, in the ADV dub, Momoko is a very different character. She is thought to have undergone more drastic changes than any of the other characters. In this version, Momoko is a fundamentalist evangelical Christian, possibly Pentecostal. Many of her lines contain references to God or Jesus. She also sometimes speaks disparagingly of Jews, Muslims and homosexuals. However, aside from her attempts to indoctrinate Keiichirou and her occasional reminders about spiritual damnation,
Momoko is still otherwise perfectly polite and courteous to her "heathen" friends. In the dub for Episode 12,
( she reveals that before her conversion, she was a drug-addicted and sex-crazed "slut," and that she met Satsuki's mother while in a Christian rehab program.)
Story
Momoko`s first appearance was in "Tonight the Spirits Will Be Resurrected! Amanojaku." She loses her cap, and the wind blows it all the way to the second floor of the old school. When she goes to get it, she meets Satsuki, Keiichirou, Hajime and Leo, accidentally scaring them. When Amanojaku starts to chase the gang, Satsuki looks in the Ghost Diary and Momoko helps to "destroy" Amanojaku.
Kayako (Satsuki's mother) sometimes possesses Momoko's body, to speak through her and help the kids fight a ghost. This happens first in the episode "Raise the Curtains! The Cursed School Arts Festival! Kutabe." When Momoko is in the spirit world in the episode "The Tunnel with No Exit - Anamaneki," Kayako is able to talk directly to her, and apologizes for the possessions.
As the series runs, Momoko always helps the gang, as she is fearless of ghosts. In The Demon Hand That Tears Through Doors: Night of Tragedy, she is the only who doesn't see Babasare, as only scared children can see them. In "The Nurse Who Tells Your Death - Mother's Feelings," she helps Satsuki to find Keiichirou. Later, when the Ghost Nurse disappears, she quickly understands that the Ghost Nurse is not evil.
Momoko's first main starring role is in the episode "Railroad Crossing of Evil: The Ghost Photograph That Takes Lives." When Leo takes a picture of the gang in the "haunted" train railway, the snapshot shows a mysterious hand holding Momoko's shoulder. As the episode runs, more things appear in the snapshot, as arms holding Momoko's neck and later, a entire woman holding her. And the most strange is that marks of hands appears on Momoko's real shoulder and neck. So, Momoko starts to get very ill, and later, the ghost Mrs. Shizuko possesses her, making Momoko go to the haunted train railway to get run over. However, Momoko is saved by the gang, and the ghost gets out of her body.
Trivia
Momoko's English voice actor, Monica Rial, has voiced highly diverse characters ranging from Bulma in Dragon Ball Z Kai, to Tomoko Kuroki from Watamote. In the original, it is revealed that Momoko does not like her weight, as in "Raise the Curtains! The Cursed School Arts Festival! Kutabe," she wishes to the stairs's ghost that she would lose weight. There are subtle signs that Momoko may come from from a well-off background, such as her possession of an early cellphone before children commonly had them and her parents' attire in their brief appearance in Episode 14. However, the dub plays her parents as having a dysfunctional relationship, perhaps making Momoko's purported childhood drug problems in the dub slightly more believable. Momo means "peach" and -ko means "child" or "daughter/son." Thus, "Momoko" means "peach child." Momoko does not appear in the episode "The Devil's Spell: Rites of Darkness." She often exhibits motherly affection towards Keiichirou. This can be seen in moments where she holds him when he's scared, and feeds him a tangerine in Episode 10. This is interesting, considering her psychic connection to his mom. In the dub though, this is contextualized as her attempting to indoctrinate save his soul. Quotes (English Dub)
"You're such brave, strong, handsome men. Have you accepted Jesus as your personal savior?" —Momoko, Episode 1 "It's times like this that I support the Amish mode of dress. It is on the plain side, but it does curtail adolescent erections." Momoko to Satsuki, Episode 5 "Oh, Satsuki, let's sing! [singing] Jesus loves me—COME ON, YOU KNOW THE WORDS!" —Momoko, Episode 6 "The internet was a blessing from the Lord Jesus to spread the word of God throughout the world, but pedophiles and Muslims stole it and used its holy power to seduce children like yourself into sin." —Momoko, Episode 8 "You just wait. When that wonderful president finishes stacking the Supreme Court, we won't have to." —Momoko to Satsuki, Episode 10 "James 1:14 'Each one is tempted by his own evil desire.' But I think your skirt is helping them out, Slutsuki—I mean Satsuki." —Momoko, Episode 11 "Merry Mary called my house too, Satsuki (I'm unlisted so I don't know how she got my number). I tried putting my Patty Prayer doll on the phone, but those two did not get along." —Momoko, Episode 11

Hajime Aoyama (Ned in the Latino Spanish Dub) is one of the main characters in Ghost Stories.
Appearance
Hajime's height is around 5 ft 5in, and he has black hair, tan skin, and brown eyes. His typical outfit consists of either dark blue sneakers, cargo/khaki pants, yellow t-shirt with writing and a teal green jacket or black sneakers, indigo pants, and a mustard-colored long-sleeved shirt with a two-tone pea green and cream jacket-vest. Personality
Hajime is Leo's best friend and Satsuki's next-door neighbour. He is shown to be the "very perverted boy," as he is always trying to see his female classmates' panties. He has made many attempts to look up Satsuki's skirt, and other girls as well. He is shown to be good friends with Keiichirou, and treats him like a little brother. He also enjoys messing with Satsuki, teasing her at any chance he gets. However, he also cares about her, and has shown concern and worry towards Satsuki multiple times throughout the series (e.g apologizing to her after jokingly calling her ugly). It was hinted that he may harbor some feelings towards her, and it was confirmed by the creator, but they never revealed their feelings for one another during the course of the show. Hajime is very reliable (when he is not overwhelmed with fear, at least) and comes through for the group when needed. He also enjoys playing video games. Story
Satsuki and Keiichirou first met Hajime when they arrived in their mother's family home, where she grew up. It is revealed that Hajime is their neighbour, and he noticed Satsuki's panties while she was laying down, which made her angry. Satsuki and Keiichirou then meet Hajime again, in the old building next to school. Hajime and his best friend Leo appears and says that they're "Ghost Hunters" and that they will help Satsuki to find her pet cat Kaya in the building. The next day, it is revealed that Satsuki is in the same class of Hajime and Leo. Trivia
Hajime's English voice actor, Chris Patton, is known for voicing Shin Kazama in Area 88, Sousuke Sagara in Full Metal Panic!, Greed in Fullmetal Alchemist, Toru Oikawa in Haikyū!! and Asura in Soul Eater. "Hajime" means "start" or "beginning" in Japanese. In the English dub it is implied that Hajime lost his virginity after having sex with his babysitter. Quotes (English Dub)

Keiichirou Miyanoshita (宮ノ下 敬一郎 Miyanoshita Keiichirou) (b. 1994, 31 today) (Ben, in the Latin Spanish dub) is one of the main characters of the Gakkou no Kaidan anime series. He is the younger brother of Satsuki Miyanoshita, and the youngest of the group. Keiichirou is a 1st Grade student in Class 2 at Amanogawa Elementary School.
Appearance
Keiichirou is a 12-year old boy with fair skin, short purple-gray hair, and brown eyes, taking after his father in appearance. His typical outfit consists of a light blue long-sleeved shirt with an orange/red rectangle and the letter "K", slate-gray shorts, and a pair of yellow calf-high boots.
At night, Keiichirou typically wears black-and-white spotted cow pajamas. Personality
Keiichirou is a shy, sweet boy who is very lonely. He became a good friend of Amanojaku, and sometimes brought him to school. Keiichirou really misses his mother. He also loves his older sister Satsuki and his father, although their family is strained by their lack of a mother. Keiichirou is easily scared and cries very easily, as such he is often described as a "crybaby". Whenever Satsuki is threatened by a ghost or their father is in danger he appears to worry he is going to lose another family member and becomes distraught.
Keiichirou is naïve and immature and rather clumsy at times, however, he develops emotionally over the course of the series, even coming to accept his mother's death.
In the ADV Dub, Keiichirou is not merely "immature", but portrayed as being mentally disabled. He generally spouts gibberish and is sometimes referred to as "r*******", including by Satsuki. It is also repeatedly indicated that he suffers from dyslexia. For instance, in Episode 19: Headless Rider!! Curse of Death, when Keiichirou reads from the Ghost Diary, he reverses all of the phrases, making it sound like nonsense.
Relationships
Keiichirou is very attached to the family pet Kaya. When the cat becomes possessed by Amanojaku, he still calls him "Kaya" while the rest of the cast address him by his demon name, this perhaps endears him to Amanojaku and contributes to their friendship. He is also a good friend of Hajime Aoyama and Leo Kakinoki and seems to see them as his "older brothers". He also likes to play with Momoko Koigakubo. Keiichirou is shown to be good at befriending spirits without really meaning to as he makes friends with Datto and Amanojaku. Quotes (dub)

Leo Kakinoki (b. 1990) (voiced by Makoto Tsumura in the original Japanese dub and Greg Ayres in the ADV English dub) is one of the main characters in the Ghost Stories anime series.
Appearance
Leo is around Hajime's height, with tan skin, large lips, light brown eyes, and light reddish-brown hair. His typical outfit consists of white sneakers and light blue-gray pants; additionally, his hoodie is light yellow (with light gray sleeves) and has a picture of an owl and "2001" on the front, while cerulean blue patches line the front pockets. Finally, he wears a dark periwinkle baseball cap with the same "Owl and 2001" decal as the one on his shirt and rectangular glasses. Personality
Leo is Hajime's best friend. In the beginning, he seems to be a bit of a nerd stereotype, but as the series runs, we get to see other sides to his personality. He describes himself as a specialist in ghosts and other supernatural phenomena. He is also a good friend of Satsuki. In the ADV dub, Leo is Jewish.
Story
He often tries to use his logical brain to figure out the supernatural phenomenon he and his friends often find themselves in, but more often than not ends up at the wrong conclusion. However, he also often provides initial background on the ghosts and spirits through rumors and legends he hears or reads about online.
He is shown to be experienced with a camera, pictured in the theme song holding one and often using one to document the supernatural activities he and his friends experience.
Leo is shown to have an arrogant streak and a weakness to pride as demonstrated in Episode 8, where he diligently seeks to prove Yomi-net (the fabled ghostly webpage) is real to his friends who don't believe in it, and also in Episode 3, where he becomes somewhat of a diva after taking the lead in the school Fine Arts festival.
In the ADV Dub, Leo and his family are Jewish. Story

She was the late wife of Reiichirou Miyanoshita and the late mother of Satsuki Miyanoshita and Keiichirou Miyanoshita.
Appearance
Kayako was a woman with fair skin, red hair, and green eyes, much like her daughter. She wore a variety of outfits. As a child, she had dark brown hair which she wore with a yellow ribbon, a long-sleeved white blouse, and a dark blue skirt with identically-colored suspenders. Personality
What little is shown of Kayako indicates that she was a kind and caring person, who loved her family dearly.
In the ADV Dub, Kayako is considerably more crass and crude, such as when she tells her elementary school-age children Satsuki and Keiichirou (through a letter) about how she loved "the hot, sweaty, wall-slammin' sex" she used to have with her husband. Story
Kayako went to Amanogawa Elementary School, "The Old School House", in 1973. Her mother was principal of the school at the time. Her future husband, Reiichirou, also went to same elementary school, which was where they first met.
Kayako was very talented in art and won first prize at an art contest. In honor of her winning the contest, Reiichirou gave her a musical box that she kept until she died 28 years later. Kayako always believed in ghosts, so she became a medium. She also developed spiritual powers, where she was able to put all the ghosts she encountered to spiritual sleep. Fearing that someday the ghosts might be resurrected, she wrote down information of all the ghosts she had put to spiritual sleep in a diary which she called "the Ghost Diary".
Many years later, Kayako married Reiichirou. She gave birth to their first child Satsuki in May 1990 and their second child Keiichirou in 1994. In 1995, Kayako developed an illness and was sent to St. Rosario Hospital. Her family would pay her a visit when they got their off days from work and school. During her time at the hospital, Cursed Nurse ghost visited her and told her she was going to die soon. One night, she met Momoko in the cafeteria area. While talking, Kayako seemed to have accepted the fact that she was going to die and told herself with a gloomy expression "it's alright now". The day before she died, Kayako wrote a letter to her family, telling them she was sorry for leaving them so soon and hoping she would be able to see them in the next world.
Several years later, her family moved back to her hometown where her daughter discovered her old ghost diary in the old school house. Kayako's spirit has haunted the ghost diary and appeared a few times to help Satsuki put the ghosts to spiritual sleep. She also possessed Momoko in order to help and talk to Satsuki and her friends.
In Episode 3, she possessed Momoko to explain how to trap Kutabe In Episode 4, she possessed Momoko to explain how to trap the piano ghost In Episode 10, while Momoko was in the spirit world, Kayako spoke directly to her In Episode 20, she possessed Momoko to give Satsuki one last word of encouragement After Satsuki successfully put back all the ghosts back to spiritual sleep, Kayako was able to move on because her diary contents were gone. Afterwards, her family attended her second memorial service. Trivia
Her Maiden Name is Kayako Kamiyama. In Episode 11, Satsuki wanted to know if her mother was a great cook, her father stated she wasn't a bad cook, that her cooking was average to him, but she was quite good at making dumplings. In Episode 13, when Satsuki and Hajime went back in time, they met Kayako when she was a child, her hair color was different: instead of being reddish-brown, her hair was dark brown. In the final episode, Satsuki stated that Kayako's favorite flower are daffodils. In the English version, it was stated that Kayako was bisexual. Satsuki inherited Kayako's features, eyes, hair, art skills and spiritual power. Quotes (dub)

Matsushima Matsushima Ms. Matsushima Ms. Matsushima is a teacher at Amanogawa Elementary school. She makes her first appearance in a cameo in Episode 11, but her main appearance is in Episode 18 as an important minor character.
Story
In Akane-San of the Broadcasting Room: Voice of the Dead, she fills in for the missing broadcasting students. Later, she needed to attend a staff meeting, so she asks Satsuki to fill in for her. When the gang informs her that there are ghosts at the school, they task her with opening the door to save Satsuki. Changes in the Dub
Ms. Matsushima, or Bobbi Matsushima as the English version officially names her, undergoes a significant change in the dub. Despite her soft, gentle demeanor, she can be viciously unkind towards those she dislikes, belittling Satsuki's appearance and intelligence to her face. She is also an immense nymphomaniac, freely fantasizing and raising adult topics in front of elementary school children. Her behavior is a source of great disgust for Satsuki and her friends, especially the devoutly Christian Momoko.
In the dub for Episode 18, after Ms. Matsushima fills in for the missing radio club students during lunchtime, she and Mr. Sakata ask Satsuki to fill in for her so the two teachers can have sex between periods. Satsuki reluctantly agrees, and Ms. Matsushima promises to make her valedictorian and secure her a spot at Harvard. Ms. Matsushima's dalliance with Sakata leaves her unsatisfied though, and she helps Satsuki and her friends defeat the ghost Akane. She does not make an appearance in the series, and it is ambiguous whether or not she had psychic powers like her daughter. However, while it’s never read out loud, Kayako describes in a few entries of the ghost diary knowledge her mother passed down (such as a warning that destroying a vessel in which a ghost has been trapped in will release them), indicating she was at least familiar with the supernatural. A later entry mentions Kayako talking with her mother about the Utsushimi. Furthermore, the entry on Ouma suggests members of the Kamiyama family (which she either married into or was a part of) have been putting evil spirits to sleep for generations, and her choice of profession may have been in part to keep close on the old haunted school house.

Using fright to its advantage, Yamime tricks people into fearing for their lives after pretending to be their friend, and convinces them to conduct a ritual that abolishes them from history itself. It was first encountered by Kayako Miyanoshita, who in turn put the spirit to rest after the disappearance of her classmate, Shinobu Matsuba. Years later, Yamime takes on the form of Shinobu in order to trick schoolgirls Tomomi Takahashi, Misono Kiyohara, Satsuki Miyanoshita, and Aya Etou into conducting a deadly ritual.

When shifting into its true form, the spirit is shown to have dark, gray skin with lots of imprints and whiskers, and has glowing yellow eyes. The spirit also has a third eye, which rests inside the mouth, and glows red.
Personality
Yamime is a master manipulator who tricks young students into erasing themselves from the world as a way to steal their souls. The ghost has been mentioned as evil and deceiving, with Amanojaku referring to her as a "bitch." It is also cunning and clever, and likes to trick others, hence manipulation. Yamime can sometimes become easily frightened, especially when it comes to being "tied" in red string and bright lights.
History
Past
15 Yamime A drawing of Yamime by Kayako, as depicted in 1973. Yamime is a deadly "ghost" who appears to have the ability to erase certain pieces of history, including that of individuals. Its sole purpose is to make it's victim fearful for their life in order to manipulate them into conducting a ritual to erase their entire existence.
Yamime was encountered by Satsuki's mother, Kayako Miyanoshita, while attending Amanogawa Elementary School in 1973. Around this point in time, the spirit was able to erase Shinobu Matsuba from existence, one of Kayako's former classmates. Shinobu went missing prior to these events. When Kayako realized the truth about the spirit and what it happened to be capable of, she found a way to banish the spirit - by "bind[ing] her with red string" and bathing "her in sunlight." Upon capturing the ghost and sealing it away, Kayako had the ornament hidden away and wrote about Yamime in the Ghost Journal.
"Tonight the Spirits Will Be Resurrected! Amanojaku"
Upon arriving in the town of Amanogawa after moving to their new home, Satsuki becomes aware of her mother's Ghost Journal and eventually learns that local urbanization has unleashed all the spirits that her mother had once banished in the mountains, including Yamime.
"The Devil's Spell - Rite of Darkness"
Yamime, referring to herself as "Shinobu Matsuba," takes on the form of a victim from the past, and poses itself as a schoolgirl attending Amanogawa Elementary School. She garners the attention of classmates Tomomi Takahashi, Misono Kiyohara, and Aya Etou, who together gain Yamime's trust. Planning on conducting a ritual that will grant their desires and wishes, they are interrupted by Satsuki Miyanoshita, who also wishes to join their "club." Initially declining, Yamime invites her after Satsuki interrupts the ritual. Once the chanting ends, Yamime reminds them that the three girls are not allowed to tell anyone about it, or else their wishes will not come true. Later that night, the ghost attempts to scare Satsuki and the other girls.
The next day, the girls, with the exception of Aya, gather together to discuss what they had seen the prior night, unaware of Yamime's intentions. When Mr. Sakata calls attendance, he "skips" over Aya's name, to which he reveals that there was never an "Aya" in the class. Frightened, the three girls confront Yamime after class, where it reveals that Aya called it last night to give up on the ritual, and instructed her on how to do so. Yamime makes the same deal with the remaining three girls, and reminds them that they can quit anytime. The three girls all agree that they want to quit, and Yamime instructs them on how to do so.
Yamime, episode 15 timestamp 19-35 Yamime, in her semi-true form, bound with "red string" by Satsuki. That night, Yamime is able to trick both Misono and Tomomi into conducting the "counter-ritual" and erases their very existence from everyone. When Satsuki goes to conduct the ritual, Amanojaku intervenes and reveals to her that whoever told her to do it "is either a ghost or a bitch." Surprised, Satsuki goes to call Tomomi where her mother reveals that nobody by that name lives at her home. Shortly thereafter, Yamime appears at her house while her father and brother are asleep to attack her. Amanojaku is able to help Satsuki run, while fighting the ghost in order to buy her time to find a way to put it to rest. Yamime makes its way to Satsuki's room, and while initially Satsuki has no idea what was the spirit’s name, ghostly hands appear at her window help Satsuki by identifying her as Yamime. Satsuki consults the Ghost Journal and is told to "bind her with red string and bathe her in sunlight." Satsuki finds she has no red string and instead draws red lines with lipstick on her closet mirror in place of string so when Yamime looks into it, it appears as if she were tied up. To 'bathe her in sunlight', she attempst to use a camera flash on Yamime, but is unable to do so at first. Yamime breaks and grabs onto Satsuki, who is able to use the camera's flash, putting her to spiritual sleep. The next day, Aya, Tomomi, and Misono appear on Satsuki's porch sleeping, where it's revealed that Yamime was not able to retrieve their souls.
"Farewell, Amanojaku... The Arrival of Ohma"
Yamime is resurrected by Ouma shortly after seeking his revenge on Satsuki and her family. Upon doing so, Yamime is able to terrorize the children of the school, before eventually falling back into spiritual sleep.

Amanojaku (small) Amanojaku as he first appears in Episode 1 When Amanojaku first appears in Episode 1, it is as a tiny, harmless-looking spirit, glowing red and with a whispy tail instead of legs as well as a comically large navel. His voice is high-pitched. His first lines are asking Satsuki to be friends with him. When she refuses he fades away ominously saying that Satsuki would be better off friends with him than enemies. What follows is several supernatural phenomenon, breaking the windows and causing the chandelier to fall on them, frightening Satsuki and her friends and feeding Amanojaku with power so when he reappears, it is as a larger spirit.
Episode 1 timestamp 13-29 Amanojaku (2nd form) Amanojaku's second form has longer hair and a more defined physique. His voice has deepened unsettlingly. Bandages have appeared on his forearms and he appears to have gained legs. He beckons Satsuki to come over and be friends with him once again, but it turns out to be a trap as, as soon as Satsuki steps forward, Amanojaku makes the umbrellas in a stand to the side rise and fly at her, scaring her and her friends once again and giving Amanojaku even more power. This triggers his final growth to his full-powered form.

He has stripes of colored tattoos on his arms and chest, three blue ones on his arms and two purple ones on his chest. He wears a tattered loincloth around his waist and a small black hat with '邪' (evil, wicked) written on it. There are bandages wrapped around his forearms and legs and overlarge golden hoops at his wrists as well as ankle bracelets.

Supernatural Abilities
In Kaya's body, Amanojaku has limited powers, only able to slightly move small objects. He absorbs the fear of Satsuki and her classmates through their ghostly encounters and regains strength and supernatural abilities. As a cat, Amanojaku can sense and identify ghosts in the close vicinity, it is unclear if this is a result of his spiritual nature, or an innate feline trait. Character Arc
01 Amanojaku diary Amanojaku in the Ghost Diary Amanojaku is a typical tsundere character in the series. On the surface, he expresses great scorn and hostility towards Satsuki and her friends, taunting them about enjoyable it will be to watch later ghosts kill them. However, bit by bit, he starts to provide information and hints to Satsuki and her friends about the ghosts and threats in several episodes, reluctantly at first, but with increasing friendliness. Over the course of the series he comes to care about Satsuki and her friends, although he never completely drops his outward callousness. In particular he grows close to Keiichirou, with whom he is seen spending time with and bonding. He accompanies Keiichirou to the hospital where the boy's mother died in Episode 12 and assists in defending against the ghost Yamime in Episode 15 and the spirit Souma in Episode 16. He shrugs off these instances as moments of weakness and assures others that he is merely helping so he can get his powers back. However, in the final episode Amanojaku actively chooses to remain in Kaya's body until he is forced to leave it to save Satsuki, Keiichirou, and their friends from Lord Ouma in the climax of the series. At the beginning of Episode 20, Amanojaku promises Keiichirou that they would pick white daffodils, Satsuki and Keiichirou's mother's favorite flower, together, a promise which he laments being unable to keep in the scene leading up to him departing Kaya for the final battle.
Like other violent ghosts, Amanojaku at least initially expresses deep contempt for living humans. This becomes both an internal point of cognitive dissonance and a source with friction in his interactions with other ghosts. When called out for his association with humanity by other spirits, his responses are defensive and lean heavily on rationalizations such saying humans are his prey, or that the only thing he hates more than humans but hates a ghost's modus operandi even more. It is only in Episode 20 when he is openly willing to call Satsuki his friend.
The fate of Amanojaku at the end of the series is unclear, but it is implied that he is free in the world and haunting to his heart's content, however it is also possible he was placed in spiritual sleep in the camphor tree overlooking the cemetery as the final scene is his light laughter showing the sun-dappled branches of the tree. Either way, it is shown that Amanojaku no longer holds a grudge against Satsuki and her family as he leaves a bouquet of white daffodils for Keiichirou at the base of the tree. ADVERTISEMENT
Changes in the Dub
In the ADV dub, Amanojaku undergoes some line changes but largely retains his personality and character arc. Mean-spirited and provocative in his original lines, he perhaps already dovetailed nicely with the irreverent direction that the American voice actors took the series, and they simply made his new lines slightly more mean-spirited and provocative. Trivia
Amanojaku is in the end credits painting. The only episodes where Amanojaku does not appear are The Ogre of the Underworld: The Circuits That Lead to Hell, Shirotabi: The Corpse That Wanders the Night and Terror at Bloodstain Lake! The Snow Ghost. Amanojaku would make Kaya look very scary when he is angered enough, ie. when the kids are in grave danger. Amanojaku, or Amanjaku (天邪鬼, "heavenly evil spirit") is a demon-like creature in Japanese folklore. It is usually depicted as a small oni, and is thought to be able to provoke a person's darkest desires and thus instigate him into perpetrating wicked deeds.[1] Amanojaku's Japanese voice actor, Ryusei Nakao voices Frieza in Dragon Ball franchise, thus explaining his Friezaesque voice and mannerisms. In the 2019 anime Dororo, they meet Amanojaku in episode 19, "The Story of the Amanojaku".

- #30Anamaneki
Keys: Anamaneki
The Anamaneki is a ghost, or a group of ghosts, of people who died in a tunnel. It's a lonely place to die, being a dark, damp hole, so the ghosts may try to bring humans inside for company. On the roadway near Amanogawa elementary school, the Mamiana tunnel is haunted by an Anamaneki. One of the ghosts is a taxi driver who crashed his car and died in the tunnel. Sometime after this event, the tunnel was closed from vehicle use. Kayako Miyanoshita encountered the Anamaneki of the tunnel, but was unable to put it to spiritual sleep, noting in her ghost diary that she barely escaped, and would avoid the tunnel in the future.
When Satsuki and the gang entered the tunnel, they were drawn into the spirit world; caught between life and death. While there, the spirit of Kayako Miyanoshita, who is dead, was able to speak directly to Momoko. The kids saw visions of the taxi driver and his beloved daughter Kazumi. On Kayako's instructions, the kids imagined themselves destroying their own gravestones, which allowed them to escape the spirit dimension back to the real world. They could not put the ghosts to spiritual sleep, although they did befriend the ghost of the taxi driver. There is some hope however that talking to the children put the Taxi Driver's ghost to spiritual sleep, and with the most dangerous of the ghosts pacified the rest of the Anamaneki could be put to sleep as well in the future.
Timeline
Based off the rumors discussed in the episode, it seems the general timeline for how the Anamaneki formed is
1925 - While constructing the tunnel, an accident killed many people according to one of workers at the start of the episode. The sign in front of the tunnel says 1925, so the tunnel was probably completed around then
Leo also mentions an accident occurring inside the tunnel with an unknown cause. It isn't clear if this is referring to the same accident above or if this was a separate accident caused by Anamaneki.
1970s - the Taxi driver was killed. His taxi is described as being a Bluebird from the 1970s, and his daughter appears middle age at the end of the episode (she was around 10 when he died), so it is likely that he was killed in the early 1970s
1973 - Kayako attempts to exorcize the tunnel. Kayako was a student in 1973 and wrote her diary around then. She describes a ghost (singular) having regrets tying them to the world so strong that she was drawn in by its bitterness and barely escaped. It seems implied that the Taxi Driver was this ghost, being the only one in the episode with a unique form, memories the gang can see, and the ability to leave the tunnel to find victims.
At some undisclosed time the tunnel was closed, Leo describes it as being closed "all this time".
1990s? - Leo says that "a few years ago" (the show was released in 2000 and appears to be contemporary), some people from a TV show about psychics came to do coverage on the cave and disappeared, likely joining the ranks of the Anamaneki.

The way to defeat her is to present a talisman, and chant a wish to go back home.

Ouma is a massive, imposing monstrous humanoid, with skin and claws made of rock. His head and ugly features appear like roughly carved, faceted stone. He has bright blue eyes with slit-like pupils and jagged, sharp yellow teeth. He has huge, stony forearms and a spiked Ankylosaur-like tail. Ghost Diary Entry
20 Ouma Ouma in the Ghost Diary For those of the Kamiyana bloodline, who have made this land their home for generations and whose calling has been to put evil spirits to spiritual sleep, the greatest test is fighting the Spirit of Vengeance, Ouma. The reason for this is, most ghosts will not be resurrected as long as their places of spiritual sleeping aren't defiled, but even after being put to sleep, Ouma stores his spiritual power and keeps coming back. In addition, Ouma is very much able to control things around him, and he even revives ghosts from spiritual sleep and controls them. That's why, no matter what happens, he must be put to spiritual sleep.
Spiritual sleep method: I surrounded him with flames from torches, and then chanted the spell using all of my spiritual powers to channel it, and put him to spiritual sleep in the bell at the temple.
This is from the subtitled version. In the dubbed version, Satsuki doesn't read from the book, but just rambles on about how powerful Ouma is. ADVERTISEMENT
Story
Ouma, episode 20, timestamp 11-06 Ouma, the Spirit of Vengeance, attacking Satsuki and her friends The first thing he did when he was freed of his spiritual sleep was go after Satsuki and Keiichirou. The only way to seal him away was to imprison him in a huge bell once the exorcist has enough spiritual power. Satsuki and the gang decide to use the old school's bell, but since Satuski hadn't developed her spiritual powers at that time, Amanojaku left Kaya's body to fight with Lord Ohma while Satsuki gathered power. In the end, Satsuki seems to have sealed both Ohma and Amanojaku.
Supernatural Abilities
Episode 20, timestamp 14-12 Ouma's abilities transforms the landscape into an apocalyptic wasteland Ouma has powers over stone and earth elements, able to create enormous splits in the Earth's crust that expose lava. It is also explained in the Ghost Diary that Ouma's revival also awakens every other ghost that had been put to sleep controlled under his power. Ouma also has the ability to possess and control scores of humans as Satsuki's class and teacher come under his power, luring Satsuki and Keiichirou into the Old School. In these ways it is arguable that Ouma is among the most powerful ghosts that Satsuki faces. He can store great power for waking up through ghosts who are put into sleep, therefore facing him is an obligation for all Kamiyama bloodline who puts evil ghosts into spiritual sleep. Trivia
He was the last and most muscular ghost to be presented. The name is spelled 'Ouma' in the end credits and the subtitles. The Crunchyroll title for the subbed version uses the alternate spelling 'Ohma', as in "Farewell, Amanojaku — The Descent of Ohma". The dubbed version title doesn't include the name, it's just "Farewell, Amanojaku

Teke Teke, like Hanako, and Kuchisake-onna, was based on a Japanese urban legend. She is said to be the vengeful ghost of a young woman who fell onto a railway line and had her body cut in half. Anyone who encounters her will be cut in half, or have their legs cut off.[1] Traditionally, she pursues people by dragging herself with her arms, making a "teke teke" sound, hence the name. Teke Teke appears in the end credits painting.
Teke Teke is a well-known and eerie Japanese urban legend centered around the vengeful spirit of a young woman who met a horrific death. Here’s a full breakdown of her appearance, powers, and background:
Background / Origin: Teke Teke is said to be the ghost of a schoolgirl or woman who was tragically cut in half by a train. There are a few variations of her backstory, but the common version is:
She fell (or was pushed) onto railway tracks and was severed at the torso by an oncoming train. Some versions say she was trying to retrieve something she dropped, while others suggest suicide or a cruel prank gone wrong. After her death, her rage and sorrow caused her to become an onryō (怨霊) — a vengeful spirit — doomed to roam the world in search of her lower half or to take revenge. Appearance: Teke Teke is described as:
A torso, missing everything from the waist down. Her arms pull her along the ground or she uses her elbows to drag herself, creating a distinctive scraping or "teke teke" sound — which is how she gets her name. She often appears in a school uniform, especially in stories set near schools or train stations. Her face is typically pale, with long black hair (classic yūrei/ghost traits in Japanese folklore). Her movement is unnatural — some stories say she can move incredibly fast, faster than you can run. Powers: Teke Teke has a few terrifying abilities associated with her legend:
Superhuman speed: Despite having no legs, she can move incredibly quickly, usually faster than a human can escape. Teleportation (in some versions): She can appear suddenly or travel long distances mysteriously. Mimicry or luring: In some tales, she mimics voices or cries to lure people closer. Deadly encounters: If you see her, you’re usually doomed. She is said to cut her victims in half to make them like her, using a scythe, claw, or even a piece of broken glass. Curses: Just hearing the story or saying her name can invite her attention in some versions — like a "curse" or contagion.

Ultimately, Yuki is sent to spiritual rest after the gang repeats the chorus "We go with the snow, but not the snow that is yellow," using an old photo of her from a newspaper.

- #46Futakuchi-onna
Keys: Futakuchi-onna
Futakuchi-onna (二口女), meaning "Two-Mouthed Woman," is a creepy and iconic figure in Japanese folklore. She isn’t a ghost like Teke Teke, but rather a supernatural yōkai — a monster or spirit with bizarre and often symbolic traits. Here’s a full breakdown of her appearance, powers, and background:
Background / Origin: The Futakuchi-onna is usually portrayed as a woman who appears perfectly normal, even beautiful, at first glance. However, she hides a terrifying secret:
She has a second mouth on the back of her head, under her hair. This second mouth has sharp teeth, a long tongue, and an insatiable hunger. The origin varies, but most stories revolve around greed, guilt, or starvation: In one tale, a miserly husband marries a woman because she never eats. But his food keeps vanishing. Eventually, he discovers the second mouth, which consumes the food secretly. In another version, a mother lets her stepchild starve, and the spirit of the child creates the second mouth as a curse. Appearance: Normal front: From the front, she looks like a beautiful or modest woman — calm and quiet. Hidden horror: On the back of her head is the second mouth, often hidden under long, black hair. The second mouth: Can speak independently. Is rude, loud, and constantly demanding food. Will scream in pain if it’s not fed, causing headaches or agony for the woman. The woman’s hair may act like tentacles or arms, helping to feed the second mouth. Powers & Traits: Supernatural appetite: The second mouth is always hungry and eats far more than a normal person. Possessed hair: The woman’s hair may move on its own, grabbing food or attacking people. Split personality (in some versions): The second mouth has its own voice, mood, and intentions. Immortality or curse: Some stories treat her as cursed — she cannot die or be freed unless certain conditions are met. Symbolism & Interpretations: Futakuchi-onna is often seen as a metaphor for:
Repressed emotions or guilt. The hidden cost of greed or neglect. The duality of appearance — beauty hiding horror. Sometimes used in older times as a cautionary tale about stingy women or the consequences of not taking care of family.
- #47Yuki-onna
Keys: Yuki-onna
Yuki-onna (雪女), meaning “Snow Woman,” is one of Japan’s most iconic and haunting supernatural beings. Unlike the violent spirits like Teke Teke, Yuki-onna’s stories are often tragic, mysterious, and beautiful — blending danger with elegance. Here’s a full breakdown of her appearance, powers, and background:
Background / Origin: Yuki-onna is a yōkai or yūrei (ghost/spirit) who appears during blizzards and snowstorms, usually in mountainous or rural areas. She is associated with death by cold, and her stories go back centuries in Japanese folklore.
There are many versions of her myth, but most follow a similar structure:
She appears to lost travelers in the snow, often alone or stranded. In some stories, she kills them with her icy breath or touch. In others, she spares someone out of pity or love — especially if the person is young or kind — but gives a warning never to speak of her. If her secret is broken, she vanishes forever or exacts revenge. Appearance: Yuki-onna is always portrayed as otherworldly and strikingly beautiful, but also eerie:
She wears a white kimono, symbolizing death, snow, and purity. Her skin is pale white or translucent, sometimes appearing to glow in the snow. She has long black hair or silvery hair, depending on the region. Her eyes are cold, emotionless, or hypnotic, sometimes glowing. She may hover above the snow without leaving footprints. Powers & Traits: Ice powers / freezing breath: She can freeze people instantly, often just by breathing on them. Control over snow: She can summon blizzards or vanish into flurries of snow. Hypnosis or allure: Her beauty can captivate or enchant people, lulling them into a false sense of safety. Weightless movement: She floats silently, leaving no footprints. Invisibility / transformation: She can vanish in snowstorms or disguise herself as a normal woman. Symbolism & Themes: Yuki-onna is often seen as a symbol of nature’s deadly beauty — serene and cold, alluring yet fatal. She represents:
Winter’s deadly calm. The duality of love and death. Loneliness and isolation. The unforgiving forces of nature. Famous Story: One of the most famous Yuki-onna tales comes from Lafcadio Hearn’s Kwaidan:
Two woodcutters are trapped in a snowstorm. Yuki-onna appears and freezes the older man to death but spares the younger, warning him to never speak of her. Years later, he marries a mysterious beautiful woman. One night, he tells her the story of Yuki-onna — and she reveals that she was the spirit who spared him. Heartbroken at his broken promise, she leaves him forever.
- #48Hone-onna
Keys: Hone-onna
Hone-onna (骨女), meaning “Bone Woman,” is a chilling and tragic figure in Japanese folklore — a type of yōkai or spirit that appears as a beautiful woman but is actually a skeleton underneath. Her legend blends themes of love, obsession, and death, often with a disturbing twist. Here’s a full breakdown of her appearance, powers, and background:
Background / Origin: Hone-onna is typically the ghost of a woman who died longing for love, often due to betrayal, heartbreak, or unfulfilled romance. Unlike other aggressive spirits, Hone-onna’s motivation is usually rooted in deep attachment.
She returns from the dead to visit or seduce her former lover. The man, still enchanted by her beauty, doesn’t realize she’s long dead — until it’s too late. Sometimes she draws energy from the man to sustain her illusion, eventually draining him of life. She appears in works like Lafcadio Hearn’s "Kwaidan" and other Edo-period ghost stories.
Appearance: From the front or in dim light, she appears as a stunningly beautiful woman, often in a kimono. Her beauty is deceptive — when seen in a mirror, through magic, or in daylight, her true skeletal form is revealed. She may look like a rotting corpse or a fully animated skeleton, sometimes still wearing the clothing or hair of her living self. Powers & Traits: Illusion magic: She can appear as her former living self, hiding her true, skeletal form. Hypnotic beauty: Her appearance and voice can bewitch or seduce her lover. Life-draining kiss or touch: She may feed off her partner’s life force, aging or killing them slowly. Persistence beyond death: Her spirit lingers due to obsession or unfulfilled love, making her emotionally powerful but dangerous. Famous Story (Hone-onna in Kwaidan): In Lafcadio Hearn’s tale:
A man falls in love with a mysterious, graceful woman. They meet nightly, and he becomes deeply attached. One day, a curious onlooker sees him embracing what appears to be a skeleton, not a woman. The illusion breaks — and the man realizes he’s been loving the ghost of a dead woman. He either dies from shock or pines away after she vanishes. Symbolism & Themes: Hone-onna represents:
The destructive power of obsession and longing. The idea that love can blind us to truth. The line between beauty and horror, life and death. A warning about clinging to the past — literally loving someone who should have been let go.
- #49Jorōgumo
Keys: Jorōgumo
Jorōgumo (絡新婦), meaning “Binding Bride” or more literally “Entangling Bride-Spider,” is a seductive and deadly spider yōkai (妖怪) from Japanese folklore. Her legend weaves together beauty, trickery, and horror — making her one of the most memorable shapeshifting monsters in traditional ghost stories.
Background / Origin: The Jorōgumo is a type of spider demon that, after living hundreds of years, gains magical powers and the ability to shapeshift into a human — usually a beautiful woman.
She lives in mountain caves, abandoned houses, or forests, and lures wandering men. Often, she seduces them, brings them home, and ensnares them in her webs before devouring them. In some tales, she appears by a waterfall or stream, pretending to be a damsel in distress — her beauty is bait. The name also plays on words: “Jorō” means prostitute or courtesan in older Japanese, and “gumo” (kumo) means spider — reinforcing the idea of seduction + death. Appearance: In human form: She appears as a beautiful woman, often in a bright kimono. She may carry a musical instrument, like a biwa or shamisen, and sing to attract victims. She is elegant, calm, and mesmerizing. In spider form (true form): A giant spider, often grotesque and monstrous. Some stories say her lower body transforms into spider legs, or her back splits open to reveal the spider form. She may reveal multiple eyes, fangs, or web-shooting limbs mid-attack. Powers & Traits: Shapeshifting: Can seamlessly transform between a woman and a giant spider. Web manipulation: Creates strong, almost invisible webs to trap and paralyze victims. Illusion: Can create illusions, mimic voices, or appear as someone familiar to her prey. Venomous bite: In spider form, she can bite and poison or paralyze victims. Longevity: As a spider spirit, she is ancient and cunning. Famous Tale – The Jorōgumo of Jōren Falls: Near Jōren Falls in Izu, travelers began disappearing. A woodsman fell in love with a beautiful woman he met by the falls. But monks warned him she was the Jorōgumo. He tried to visit her one last time but was dragged underwater by her web, never to be seen again. Since then, Jōren Falls became known as haunted by the spider bride. Symbolism & Themes: Jorōgumo represents:
The danger of lust and superficial beauty. The idea that something beautiful can be deadly underneath. Predatory seduction, often tied to traditional views on feminine mystery and danger. The predator-prey dynamic in romance or trust gone wrong.
- #50Harionago
Keys: Harionago
Harionago (針女), also known as Harionna (針女 or 針女御), means "Needle Woman" and is a chilling yet lesser-known Japanese urban legend and yōkai (supernatural entity). She is one of the more aggressive and sadistic female spirits in Japanese folklore — a twisted blend of beauty and horror.
Background / Origin: Harionago is said to wander the roads of Shikoku (one of Japan’s main islands), especially targeting young men. Her legend isn’t ancient but feels rooted in traditional ghost tales with a modern urban horror edge.
Her name literally translates to “barbed woman” or “woman with needles.” She enjoys tormenting and killing men, often laughing cruelly as she attacks. Unlike other spirits driven by sorrow or love, Harionago seems to kill for pleasure — making her more like a classic predator spirit or slasher-style yōkai. Appearance: She looks like a beautiful young woman, often described as gorgeous, with a sinister smile. Her most terrifying feature is her long, flowing hair, which contains sharp barbed hooks or needle-like tips. Her hair is alive and under her control — able to extend, whip, and stab like tentacles or wires. Some versions describe her having blood-red lips and glowing eyes when she strikes. Powers & Abilities: Hair manipulation: She can fully control her long hair, which is embedded with hooks or barbs that can pierce flesh like spears. Deceptive beauty: Her charm and appearance lure men in — but anyone who smiles back at her is marked. Speed and stealth: She strikes fast, often giving no chance to escape once she’s close. Predatory nature: Unlike many tragic or cursed spirits, Harionago is cruel by nature, almost like a supernatural serial killer. How the Legend Works: Harionago walks alone at night and encounters a man. She smiles at him — if the man smiles back, she attacks with her barbed hair. The attack is violent and fatal, often described as her tearing the victim apart with her hair. Sometimes she chases victims who try to run, laughing as she hunts them down. Symbolism & Themes: Harionago is thought to represent:
The danger of judging by appearances — beauty hiding lethal intent. A fear of female power and vengeance, twisted into a monstrous form. A modern warning about strangers, flirty behavior, or being careless at night. Unlike Yuki-onna or Hone-onna, Harionago does not show mercy — she enjoys what she does, making her closer to a vengeful monster than a mournful ghost.
