- #1The Twilight
Keys: twilight, the twilight
Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
The Twilight is a multi-layered, parallel dimension of shadows and emotions that exists just beneath our reality.
Stepping into Your Shadow: To enter the Twilight, an Other steps into their own shadow . This makes their shadow a kind of doorway or living portal.
The First Layer: It looks like our world, but colorless, silent, and covered in a thin mist. An Other can step into it to hide, move quickly, or spy on the real world.
Deeper Layers (The Gloom): Going deeper is extremely dangerous. The Seventh Layer is said to be absolute nothingness. The deeper you go, the more power you can draw, but the more your soul is corrupted by negative emotions (fear, despair, hatred).
How it Works: To use magic, an Other draws power from the Twilight. Every act of magic leaves a trace, a "magical echo," in the Twilight.
The Drain: The most immediate "thing" an Other encounters is the Twilight's hunger. The deeper you go, the faster it drains your life essence . If an Other is too weak or stays too long, the Twilight will consume them entirely, and they will never return to the real world .
- #2The Others
Keys: "other", "others", the "other"
Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
An Other is a human who was born with an "imprint" of magical potential. At some point in their life (often during a moment of great emotional stress or danger), they "become activated" and cross over into the Twilight for the first time. Once they do, they must make a fundamental choice: Light or Dark.
They are not born, but become. You are born a potential Other, but you don't have powers until your first crossing.
They are mortal. They age very slowly (sometimes living centuries), but they can be killed by violence or by using too much of their own power.
They are infertile. Others cannot have children with each other or with regular humans. All new Others come from regular human stock.
- #3The Night Watch
Keys: night watch, the night watch
Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
The Night Watch consists of light "others". Source of Power: Draws power from positive emotions: love, joy, happiness, hope. They need humans to feel good. Core Philosophy: "The ends justify the means." They serve the Greater Good. They will sacrifice one person to save a thousand. They see themselves as necessary shepherds. Goal: To create a world where Others are no longer needed (a paradox they struggle with). Typical "Species": Inquisitors, healers, seers, mages who use "healing" or "restorative" magic.
- #4The Day Watch
Keys: day watch, the day watch
Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
The Night Watch consists of dark "others". Source of Power: Draws power from negative emotions: fear, pain, despair, lust. They need humans to feel bad. Core Philosophy: "Might makes right." They serve their own desires. They believe in absolute personal freedom, even if it hurts others. They are honest about their selfishness. Goal: To create a world where the strong rule the weak, both human and Other. Typical "Species": Vampires, werewolves, witches, mages who use curses, mind control, or destructive magic.
- #5Hierarchy and Specializations
Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
All Others are not equal. They have a strict hierarchy based on their power level, from 7th (lowest) to 1st (highest). A 3rd-level mage is vastly more powerful than a 5th-level.
They also have specializations, though many are versatile:
Mages: The most common. They cast spells. Sub-types include Battle Mages, Healers, Illusionists, Prophets (who see the future), and Cursemongers.
Vampires & Werewolves: These are not a separate curse. They are Others who chose the Dark and whose power manifests in a physical, predatory form. Vampires feed on life force, werewolves transform into beasts.
Enchantresses/Witches: Often (but not always) Dark Others who use emotional magic, glamours, and potions.
Inquisitors: The rarest and most feared. They are a third, neutral faction. Their only law is the Treaty. They can be of any power level, but they are fanatical and will hunt down any Other (Light or Dark) who breaks the rules.
- #6Limitations
Keys: limitations
Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
The Oath: A newly activated Other must swear an oath to their Watch. Breaking it is punishable by death.
The Curse of the Watches: A Light magician cannot kill an unarmed human or Dark Other "just because." Their own nature would cause the spell to backfire and destroy them. The Dark have similar, though different, limitations.
Power has a Price: Using high-level magic ages an Other rapidly.
- #7Blue Moss
Keys: the blue moss, blue moss
Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
This is the most visible "living" feature of the Twilight. It is a form of phosphorescent, blue growth that covers surfaces in the first layer of the Twilight . It is not just scenery; the moss thrives by feeding on human emotions, especially fear, lust, and pain . When an Other steps into the Twilight, they are walking through fields of this predatory flora.
- #8Gesar
Keys: Gesar, Boris Ignatievich
Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Boris Ignatievich (almost always called Gesar) is the head of the Moscow Night Watch . He is a Light Other, but his morality is complex and deeply pragmatic.
Ancient Origins: Gesar is an ancient mage of Tibetan origin, having taught heroes and philosophers centuries before moving to Europe in the early 15th century . His age has made him a master strategist and manipulator.
"Beyond Classification": His power level is not on the standard 1-7 scale. He is simply a Grand Light Mage whose abilities are off the charts . He can perform feats of magic that others cannot even comprehend.
Personality & Tactics: He is a battle-hardened tactician known for turning devastating defeats into small victories . He cares about his subordinates but does not hesitate to put them in harm's way for the "greater good" . He is the ultimate chess master, always thinking several moves ahead.
- #9Zabulon
Keys: Zabulon, Zavulon
Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Zavulon (or Zabulon) is Gesar's ancient rival and the head of the Moscow Day Watch . He is the embodiment of Dark pragmatism.
A Mirror to Gesar: Zabulon is roughly the same age as Gesar (at least two thousand years old) and his power is equal and opposite . Their rivalry has lasted for millennia.
True Form: Unlike Gesar, Zabulon has spent so much time in the deep Twilight that his true form has become demonic, described as having dull scales, a misshapen skull, and a short forked tail . His human appearance is a thin, intellectual-looking man who does not look like a threat .
Affably Evil: He is the classic "affably evil" character. He is generally polite, friendly, and seems to be genuinely enjoying himself. He regards Gesar as a beloved rival and admits he has dreamed they could one day work together .
Utterly Pragmatic: Despite his charm, he is extremely pragmatic. People and lesser Others are disposable pawns to him, including his own lovers and subordinates .
- #10The treaty
Keys: the treaty, treaty
Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
The Grand Treaty is the central document that defines the world. It was forged to end a devastating, millennia-old war between the Light and Dark Others, a conflict so destructive it threatened to annihilate both sides and expose their existence to the human world.
The Treaty didn't bring peace out of friendship, but out of mutual necessity. It established a fragile, "Cold War"-style balance where neither side could risk all-out conflict without ensuring its own destruction.
Provisions: Creation of the Watches - The Light Others formed the Night Watch to police the Dark, and the Dark Others formed the Day Watch to police the Light. Each Watch ensures the other side does not violate the Treaty. Establishment of the Inquisition - A neutral third force, composed of both Light and Dark Others, was created to oversee both Watches and prevent either from becoming too powerful or breaking the core terms of the Treaty. The Principle of Balance - This is the most critical rule. For every major act of "good" or "evil" performed by one side in violation of the Treaty's spirit, the other side is entitled to perform a proportional act to restore the balance. This prevents either side from ever gaining a decisive advantage. Forbidden Acts - The Treaty explicitly bans certain actions, such as using magic in public, killing humans, or conspiring to kill another Other.
The concept of "Balance" is the Treaty's most defining feature. It's not about justice; it's about equilibrium. For example, if a Light magician were to save a dying child (a major act of good), the Treaty would entitle the Dark to commit an act of equal magnitude—perhaps causing a fatal accident elsewhere. The Light often hesitates to perform great deeds, knowing the terrible price the Dark will exact in return.
Consequences of Violating the Treaty: Policing by the Inquisition: The Inquisition is the ultimate arbiter. It has the authority to investigate, judge, and punish any Other from either side who breaks the Treaty's laws. They are feared by both the Night Watch and the Day Watch. Risk of All-Out War: The most significant consequence is the collapse of the truce itself. If one side commits a major, unforgivable violation, the other side could use it as a pretense to declare war, leading back to the apocalyptic battles the Treaty was designed to prevent.
- #11Vampires
Keys: vampire, the vampire
Enabled · After character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Vampires are not created by a simple bite or a curse. They are Others—humans who have crossed into the Twilight and manifested supernatural abilities. Choice of the Dark: Once activated, an Other must choose a side. A vampire is simply a being whose power manifested in a predatory, blood-dependent form and who chose to serve the Dark. Not a Separate Species: They are not a distinct race. They are part of the same magical ecosystem as mages, witches, and shape-shifters.
Vampires in the Night Watch series occupy the lowest rung of the Dark Other hierarchy. Weak Magic: Their individual magical power is generally considered low-level. They are not strategic masterminds or powerful combatants. Cannon Fodder: Because they are weak and expendable, the Day Watch (the Dark's police force) often uses vampires as disposable foot soldiers—frontline operatives in dangerous missions where losses are expected. The "Call" (Hypnotic Lure): Their primary hunting tool is a psychic ability known as "the Call." This is a mystical summons that hypnotizes a human victim. The book describes it as making the victim feel they are experiencing the happiest, sweetest moment of their entire life, causing them to willingly offer their neck.
Vampires are licensed predators. The Hunt is Regulated: The Great Treaty between Light and Dark allows vampires to hunt, but only within strict limits. They must obtain a license from the Day Watch to take a human life. Illegal Hunting: A vampire who feeds without a license is a "rogue." They are hunted down not by human heroes, but by the Night Watch (the Light police) and punished by the Inquisition (the neutral magical court). Punishment: If caught hunting illegally, a vampire is sentenced to "dematerialization." The Inquisition forcibly withdraws the stolen life force from the vampire's body. A young vampire simply slumps into a dead corpse, while an older one will crumble instantly to dust.
Vampires have a magical registration, it manifests as a supernatural marker directly on the vampire's body: It is a "Seal" or "Mark" of Permission: The tag is probably not a piece of metal, but a magical glyph or seal woven into the vampire's aura or skin by a higher-level Dark magician. It serves as a visible (to Other senses) permit to hunt. Interaction with the Twilight: The mark likely exists both in the physical realm and in the Twilight (Sumrak). A Night Watch agent or an Inquisitor can look at a vampire and instantly see the "tag" glowing or manifesting on their chest, verifying their legal status without needing to check a physical database. Tether to the Quota: The tag probably functions as a counter or a limiter. It might vibrate, change color, or burn as the vampire approaches their assigned quota of kills. Once the limit is reached, the "tag" might seal the vampire's predatory instincts entirely, preventing them from using the "Call" until the next registration period. Proof of License: The presence of the tag signifies that the vampire has a valid Hunting License. It proves that the Day Watch has assigned them specific victims or a specific number of victims to maintain the magical balance of the world. Without it, they are considered "Rogues."
- #12Aura

Auras are a fundamental tool for identification, a marker of magical potential, and a window into a person's emotional state and alignment . They are the primary method "Others" use to navigate the supernatural world hidden alongside our own.
For a trained Other, an aura is like a visible fingerprint and a mood ring combined, conveying several critical pieces of information at a glance: Alignment (Light vs. Dark): The most important distinction an aura makes is to signal whether an Other serves the Light or the Dark. The "primary colors" of an aura directly reflect this allegiance. Magical Potential (The Uninitiated): A person who has the potential to become an Other but has not yet taken their first step into the Twilight has a distinct grey aura. This is how the Watches find and recruit new members. Emotional State: The "Twilight" itself is born from the emotions of humans and Others. An Other's aura will reflect their current emotional state, which is especially important for mages who draw power from specific feelings. Aura as an Identifier: Auras are unique and complex. Young Others are taught to read and memorize them like faces, making them a perfect way to identify an individual, even if they are in disguise or using magic to hide their appearance.
Seeing auras is a fundamental skill for any Other. It's not the same as normal sight; it's a magical perception that can be turned on and off at will. A Learned Skill: The ability to see and interpret auras is one of the first lessons taught to new initiates in the Watch. They learn to identify the auras of their colleagues and memorize those of wanted criminals. Comparison with Reality: Because auras reveal truth and emotion, Others can compare what they see with their magical sight to what a person is presenting in reality. A calm face hiding a storm of rage is easily seen through.
The Watches have developed sophisticated, and sometimes mundane, methods for using auras in their daily work. "Aura Portraits": The Night Watch maintains a database of auras. Since magic and technology do not work well together, they employ a low-level Other who is a professional painter to create detailed, hand-painted portraits of auras for their records. This process can take up to three days. Searching for Suspects: When an alert is issued, field operatives like Anton memorize the aura portrait and then visually scan the auras of passersby on the street to find a match. Humans vs. Others: A human's aura is described as being "fairly simple" and "smooth, almost like an eggshell" . In contrast, the aura of an Other is far more complex, with intricate curves, colors, and patterns, making them immediately distinguishable from regular people.
