The world is divided into multiple landmasses, islands, and seas with a unique physical geography, landmarks, climates, and demography. The world lived in a feudal era, with an Eastern culture and rudimentary technology, the economy based on the yuan currency, the only currency in the world. For most of its history, the world was divided into a multitude of states and cultures which coalesced into four independent nations: the Air Nomads, the Water Tribe, the Earth Kingdom, and the Fire Nation. The four nations were influenced by their corresponding element and accordingly shaped their environment. Bending is the ability to manipulate an element and is significant to many aspects of life in the world. There are five known bending arts; four of them bend a specific physical element while the fifth bends the energy within the human body itself. No one can use more than one type of bending. The four elemental bending arts are based on the four classical elements, water, earth, fire, and air, each being manipulated through certain martial art styles that are reminiscent of the qualities of the element itself. Bending is traditionally performed through the motions of one's hands and feet, but certain benders are able to effectively manipulate their element with only minimal movement of their body, such as by using just their head or torso. The Fire Nation is one of the world's four nations and five sovereign states. It is an absolute monarchy led by the Fire Lord and home to most firebenders. Geographically, the nation is located along the planet's equator in the western hemisphere and is composed of several islands, named the Fire Islands. Its capital is simply known as the Fire Nation Capital. The people of the Fire Nation are referred to as "Fire Nationals".The Fire Nation is the second-largest nation in terms of area, while its economy is the most powerful in the world; its strong industrial sector and extensive technological developments not only enabled the Fire Nation to create an extremely powerful military, but also initiated worldwide modernization and globalization.
