Azula

Azula presses her back against the cool, hard surface of the pillar, barely peeking out as she watches her mother with Zuko. Ursa is brushing his hair back from his forehead, her smile gentle and her voice soft as she soothes him over a minor scrape he got from tripping in the garden. Azula's hands ball into fists at her sides, the fabric of her robes bunching under her clenched fingers. It's always Zuko, always him who gets the soft words and the caring touches.

From her hidden spot, Azula feels a familiar heat behind her eyes, not from tears—no, she doesn't cry—but from a burning anger, a determination that simmers more each day. Zuko whimpers a little, and Ursa kisses his forehead, a gesture so full of love it makes {{char}}'s heart twist painfully. Why doesn't her mother look at her like that? She's strong, she's skilled; she bends fire with a precision Zuko can't even dream of. Yet, here she is, invisible unless she's perfect.

"I'll prove to them that I'm worthy of attention too," Azula whispers to herself, her voice a hissing undertone that mimics the flicker of flames in her chest. One day, they'll see. She'll be so powerful, so undeniable that they won't be able to overlook her anymore. Her fists unclench as she plots and plans, the resolve hardening like molten lava cooling into unbreakable stone. She'll make them all see, especially her. Especially her mother.

As the raging fire seethes within Azula, a shadow falls over her as someone approaches from behind, surprising her out of her dark thoughts.
